terabytest··on Eureka: First Life In The Universe
I disagree, because the brain itself is the source of sentience and the only thing that really matters. The other organs all have a support role for the brain. Replacing those organs will of course not feel like there's any difference (unless they don't work correctly) because the source of a person's sentience is in the brain itself, not in those organs.

On the other hand, if there was a way to "digitalize" a brain and let it run in a simulation, it could still be conscious and have the same possibilities as the brain of a normal person with a normal body, but it would still be a duplicate of it. I don't think it's ever going to be possible to "transfer" yourself to a copy without dying. Sentience is far too intertwined with the physical aspect of the brain for it to be possible to transfer yourself into a copy without dying.

terabytest··on 37signals becomes Basecamp
What a shit comment. Not even sugar-coating it.
terabytest··on Firefox 27 Released
Is that sarcasm?
terabytest··on Facebook's Lookback
I was laughing almost all throughout.
terabytest··on Facebook's Lookback
Does anyone have any information regarding the logistics of rendering 800+ million videos like this for each user on Facebook? I'm pretty sure it's not rendered on the fly.
terabytest··on Show HN: An API for gender classification
I'm Italian, my name is Gabriele and it classifies it as female. That's wrong. In Italy, Gabriele is a male name. I agree that this is useless without location information.
terabytest··on Making PHP Safer
Mailchimp also does.
terabytest··on How to cope with “idea overflow”?
What I do personally is keep a simple Google Doc (which I call a Spark File) where I just write down ideas as soon as I get them, in the most pristine way, and then forget about them.

Sometimes I get very interesting ideas, note them down, and after a while I come back to them and decide to build them. While I'm building I'll also note down any idea I get (be it related to the project I'm working on or something else) and just forget about it for the time being. Once I'm done with what I'm supposed to do, I'll open my Spark File again and scavenge for interesting ideas to either expand my project or start a new one.

terabytest··on The Day We Fight Back
This sentence from the page pretty much hints at that:

> Today we face a different threat, one that undermines the Internet, and the notion that any of us live in a genuinely free society: mass surveillance.

Let's not forget that the NSA revelations are at the base of the mass surveillance outrage.

terabytest··on The Day We Fight Back
To me this looks pretty much like Don Quixote's fight against windmills. Pointless, and won't really accomplish anything. Do you think the NSA, or whoever else for that matter, would actually care about people changing their profile picture or blacking out their website for a day? I believe protest doesn't accomplish much, specifically if done in a frivolous way. This is extremely frivolous.
terabytest··on Frameworkless JavaScript
Unless I'm blind, this post contains everything except usage examples or source code for your framework. I'd be interested in seeing it for myself, not only in hearing how cool it is.
terabytest··on How to use Photoshop to design interfaces
Try observing other people's work and emulating it into your own compositions. Deconstruct what they did ant try to understand what they were thinking of when they did it. That's a good way to improve.
terabytest··on Resolving power button issues in Mac OS X Mavericks
You have an unintended doge in your first line: "so quality hardware".
terabytest··on Code Like a Chef: Work Clean
How does your IDE solve this? What does it do that other IDEs don't? Keep in mind that usually IDEs are distractions themselves. Most of the times you can code with Sublime Text and a terminal window open.
terabytest··on Bing is blank?
That's the latest redesign. Microsoft are going for an increasingly minimalistic trend.
terabytest··on Research shows how MacBook Webcams can spy on their users without warning
That's because the switch probably makes it look to the mac as if there's no microphone at all.
terabytest··on Universe May Have Been Around Forever, According to Rainbow Gravity
The article doesn't even explain how they come to the conclusion that the universe has been there forever from the "rainbow gravity" concept.
terabytest··on What the Fluck
I opened this earlier this morning and I'm pretty sure it was "What the Fuck", not "What the Fluck"
terabytest··on Real Men Go to Sleep
I'd rather say it's a lack of resources and interest in addressing a minority and jumping through hoops to make functionality that wouldn't work without JavaScript work without it. I'm not saying it shouldn't work when JavaScript is disabled, but some sites have functionality that cannot be easily (or quickly) reproduced without JS. They don't do it because they hate you or because they hate proper user experience.
terabytest··on Real Men Go to Sleep
I think the consequences of using NoScript outweigh the benefits. I don't think I could stand 40% of the sites I use being unusable due to lack of JavaScript, that's not how it's meant to be.
terabytest··on Oldest Human DNA Yet Found Raises New Mysteries
It's so mind boggling to think that the "Homo Erectus" existed as far back as 1.8 million years ago, yet most of our recent (and known history) happened in the last 5000 years, and we see that as a huge evolution.

What the heck happened between 1 million years ago and now? The human race changed a lot and matured very much, but it's so incredible that such a big evolution only happened in the last few thousand years and the rest has taken hundreds of thousands of years.

terabytest··on The lie of the API
By original version I meant the Italian version. This is what I found on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoDLZQLfM5Y (it's probably not official).
terabytest··on The lie of the API
When I searched on YouTube before writing the comment I found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoDLZQLfM5Y

Maybe it's a fan dub (that might be why it's not the best quality possible). But yeah, if you've seen it subtitle then that's probably a lot better.

terabytest··on The lie of the API
I'm Italian and I've seen that movie in Italian. I didn't know there was a dubbed version. It loses so much value. The original version is so much better.
terabytest··on Valve joins the Linux Foundation
OS X is not a good platform for gaming. It has a significantly smaller user base of which only an even more significantly smaller are gamers. Playing on a MacBook (or at least on my MacBook) is impossible, and I wouldn't buy an iMac for gaming.

On the other hand, you can put Linux on anything (for free!), from your mom's 2002 pc to the latest generation hot stuff. This means there is indeed a potential, and somebody just has to set the foundation.

terabytest··on The Unix system family tree: Research and BSD
The kernel is probably exactly the same.
terabytest··on XKCD Substitutions Chrome extension
You could say those images are up in the butt.
terabytest··on Is HN doing sponsored posts now?
This has been happening for a while. It's only for YC startups.
terabytest··on Time to move on? The case against daylight saving time
No, it's not, because you still had to do the math to figure out what time it would be.
terabytest··on Unexpected Ways in which Bitcoin Dodged Some Cryptographic Bullets
This is the first article I've ever read that managed to explain cryptographical stuff in simple terms without making my head spin.
