tenryuu··on Excel team considering Python as scripting language: asking for feedback
I've probably mentioned this before on another news article. Not like it really matters. Python is nice as a beginner scripting language since it's (to my own judgement) the most easily readable language to its function set.

When working with software like office, you are going to have a lot of users that don't exactly spend their days programming, or studying syntax. Excel is a little different in their own regard. The functions system has a lot of depth to it, and makes sense to a cell system, but for some it can be a but overwhelming in terms of how its written, since everything has to be written exactly as a function. I guess you also have generic office macros, haven't used them since high school.

In saying that, could this somehow be a reason why the office team have decided on a python interpreter, instead of say JavaScript or Microsoft's work on Typescript. Because python is easy to write, fast to learn, therefore users or even really employees in large data management positions don't have to worry about their time input?

tenryuu··on Show HN: MIDI chat over WebRTC
This is nuts, granted I have to use a simple Android based MIDI device over USB-C to try it out, but I'm very much impressed
tenryuu··on Highest-quality GIF encoder based on pngquant
At least videos have these options of pausing and looping.

Gifs generally don't pause unless you have some hacks, let alone looping in gifs is a hard coded value within the image, meaning it's entirely optional, but within the export process.

This is almost nothing compared to the savings you make in download times though. Video is a much more modern solution, that's why imgur transcode all their large gifs to webm+mp4

tenryuu··on Modern terminal-based text editor
I have to say that is actually the main reason why I would be using nano. I know the basic commands for vim, as well as some extended keys for nano (save), but nano really helps for being able to not spend time outside of development to find keys for critical functions. Micro does have a help option, which is haven't really read, only briefly checked out the exe a few hours ago.

I wouldn't call it critical, but it really speeds up the learning process, or for users thst only use the program once in a blue moon (because GUI)

tenryuu··on PlainJS – Vanilla JavaScript Repository
Code cleanliness matters more so in a compiled language. Having an interpreted language means, regardless of how long it takes you to write, everything has to be downloaded/processed on every single execution of the file.

Putting more effort into my code to remove unnecessary libraries allows the end user to load pages faster, and that's what I think matters most, because I hate having to wait, sometimes even twenty seconds for some simple pages to pass a loading screen

tenryuu··on The iPhone X’s notch is basically a Kinect
Interestingly enough, I made a similar comparison before reading this article on an IRC. It felt similar to Windows Hello which uses an RGB, IR and 3D camera for face detection, which are all used for authentication. So I just made a quick bastardisation of the Kinect on this camera set, then applied that to FaceID as well

rookie mistake

tenryuu··on Show HN: Spongedown
Might be that the version of firefox I was using (since it's a lab machine) is outdated. Wasm is right now bleeding edge technology, so it's going to be a bit of a weird side for a while as machines are updated for compatibility
tenryuu··on Show HN: Spongedown
Unsure what you did wrong, but this took about a minute to process the panel on the right, before firefox crashed, taking the whole system with it.

Had to hard reset on from the physical button

tenryuu··on Why PS4 downloads are so slow
I remember someone hacking at this issue a while ago. They blocked Sony Japan's server, of which the download was coming from. The Playstation the fetched the file from a more local server, of which the speed was considerable faster.

Really strange

tenryuu··on Show HN: Twitch Plays Doom
I once played an interactive doom on Mixer (Then Beam)

Worked well for showing off the platform, since there was really a low latency. Since it uses it's own interactive input, and not relying on IRC for interaction, so it's UX is considerably more user friendly... if you want to sign up for a Microsoft Xbox live account to use it

tenryuu··on Show HN: Anonymous Discussion Platform For Any Topic (think Reddit meets Slack)
4chan seems to be doing fine
tenryuu··on Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack
Superior in every way? but all your accounts over each guild on discord is directly linked. Compare to slack which are kept all separate, with different user information, display pictures and the like.

It's easier to manage your presence on slack than it is discord, because discord offer no assistance to those who handle multiple accounts or identities.

As with other competitors, teamspeak solved this, irc doesn't have this problem at all. Skype does, doubt they will do anything about it, Microsoft have made another solution for team management

tenryuu··on Introducing Bluetooth Mesh Networking
With mesh network being shipped, I hope there is now time to develop an improvement to how bluetooth can be implemented into applications to allow better UX in handling connections/handshakes. It's fine when you only use one device, but when you start using two, man it's not user friendly
tenryuu··on A real world guide to WebRTC
Screensharing dabbles into Firefox, but doesn't offer any instructions for it, even though it's properly supported by the browser
tenryuu··on Tokyo street fashion and culture: 1980 – 2017
I know this has nothing to do with the article, but the UI/UX for this site feels so off-putting It's like a worse version of the windows 8 start screen. Can't even middle click the scroll wheel and navigate with gestures.

I wouldn't mind seeing a piece on Shiyuba fashion though

tenryuu··on Show HN: Add a play button next to IPA on Wikipedia
Imported it as a temporary add-on and it worked without any configuration.

I'm not going to reupload this work to the AMO for it to be signed for distribution though. Limitation sucks also

Yeah, even I'm confused about this
tenryuu··on Pencil – an open-source GUI prototyping tool for all platforms
they keep popping up because they are piss easy to make and offer a runtime on all platforms.

tenryuu··on Atom 1.18 released
I went to VSCode from Notepad++ After a system format, I started off with sublime and haven't looked back. Although, I will most likely prefer VSCode when working where I cannot reach a sublime licence, since it's quite a hackable program... since it's running on an uncompiled language
tenryuu··on Twitter, but for Math, with Toots
I waited for the 'run by the dev crew' mastodon.social to open registrations because I knew it would be kept the most up to date, and moderated in a consistent manner
tenryuu··on Show HN: Moon – a tiny 6kb Javascript library inspired by Vue.js
with the difference between sizes being a few kb, I don't think that they would entirely matter. What really does is execution rate. Which one performs more efficiently. If the end result is DOM, it doesn't matter what syntax you're using, the client is the most important part

tenryuu··on Doxing the hero who stopped WannaCry was irresponsible and dumb
