Even the opening long shot "has stakes". That's an amazing film packed with talent in all departments.

Fine, but I'm now wondering what sort of "data" is going to help you "charge the battery in a customer's device for them [or] move their phone closer to a cell tower."

A natural metric for a distributed system is connectivity (or conversely partition detection). A metric on connectivity is informative. Can the information help you heal the partition? Maybe, maybe not. Time to hit the logs and see why the partition occurred and if an actionable remedy is possible.

(I'm trying to understand your pov btw, so clarify as you will.)

Any system has a 'natural set' of metrics. And metrics are not about "what [went] wrong" rather system health. So Metrics -> Alert -> Log Diagnostics.

The issue with all 'drop in replacements' for Kafka iirc is that many large scale deployments of Kafka rely on exposed but internal aspects of Kafka. Do they also replicate these aspects?

temporarely··on Surprising gender biases in GPT
"late Middle English humaine, from Old French humain(e), from Latin humanus, from homo ‘man, human being’. The present spelling became usual in the 18th century; compare with humane."

and for man:

"Old English man(n), (plural) menn (noun), mannian (verb), of Germanic origin; related to Dutch man, German Mann, and Sanskrit manu ‘mankind’."

Interestingly enough, Manu was "the progenitor of mankind" and in Persian (which shares roots with Sanscrit) after Islam the equivalent "progenitor" Adam [aa-dam] is also commonly used to intend 'mankind'.

I make art for pleasure and the magical post creation beholding of what has emerged - it's a serious high :) That is of course a private concern, and that said, in my mind there are good points on both side of this argument. It is not a black/white issue.

To amplify my OP, there are certain intangibles regarding cultural artifacts which are strictly non-utilitarian. Culture is expression & is a product of the human psyche (of a coherent civilization). And past will affect the future. Culture minimally is a social tonic, maximally informs societal character.

The germinal question in context of 'high culture' (arts and letters) is whether the omission of the 'bar to entry' that requires acquisition of skill, dedication, and 'a development of a vocabulary' (etc) will have a degenerative long term effect on high culture, given that cultural development is generational and progressive, and the process of becoming an artist is a filter.

temporarely··on The zombie misconception of theoretical computer science
> God is not bound to those.

God is bound to His Word and as the saying goes 'it is written':

"Never will you find a change in the way of ALLAH. [Qur'an 33:62]

> Arbitrary creation

"HE created the heavens and the earth in accordance with the requirements of wisdom." [Qur'an 39:5]

p.s. Computing (al-Hesaab) is also addressed. Apparently God and Gauss are both rather fond of harmonic systems:

"HE It Is Who made the sun radiate a brilliant light and the moon reflect a lustre, and ordained for it proper stages, that you might know harmonic measure and mathematics. ALLAH Has not created this system but in accordance with the requirements of truth. HE details the signs for a people who possess knowledge. " [Qur'an 10:5]

temporarely··on What if everything is conscious?
As I said, the matter of consciousness is a shared experience. By denying its concrete reality due to difficulty of communicating this experience you open the door to nonsense such as LLMs being "conscious" because then people like you line up to claim "define consciousness".

> If the definition of consciousness is simply ...

No one is defining consciousness. You are simply referred to what is expected to be a common shared experience. Then the question is posed to you: please explain to yourself how (merely) a structure is affording the phenomena of what you experience. Physics only please.

This is sufficient to dethrone any purely structural notions. Which is huge, actually. And informative.

Insisting on "what is the definition" allow for various nonsense, hand waving, and large claims regarding the nature of some mechanism.

> Ho hum, I’m bored. These discussions are just pointless.

QED. That's because you insist on missing the point. Naturally it makes for boring discussion. Choose to not engage in such discussions if not contributing anything beyond the red herring of lack of definition for consciousness.

temporarely··on When the CIA turned writers into operatives
False dissent and manipulating and taking control of dissent is the goal not covering up scandals.

Spook intervention in social mind space is strategic not tactical in nature. The goal is the ability to control and steer collective conversation. To take control of dissent, place its leaders, and pen its 'thoughts'.

temporarely··on When the CIA turned writers into operatives
New Yorker neglects to mention if editors and publishers were involved. The word "publish" occurs 4 times, "editor" nil. Two of the CIA authors wrote for New Yorker. Who was the editor at the time? Meta inquiry would then wonder if this very article by New Yorker is yet another CIA article, to "manage perception".

What is the perception?

'Cold War antics' of a 'bygone era'. Or is CIA still manipulating journals and content? New Yorker is silent on this topic.

> “A bodhisattva does not need to build up virtue and happiness… A boddhisatva gives rise to virtue and happiness but is not caught up in the idea of virtue and happiness.”

collorary: If you wonder if you are a bohisattva you are not.

temporarely··on What if everything is conscious?
> please provide a definition

There is no requirement for definition. Each and everyone of us (gpt bots excluded) experiences consciousness continually, in various modalities. The experience is shared.

For example, considering the nature of consciousness and the possible mechanics behind it, we could consider sights. Seeing. We all see things in our minds (and only in our minds!) and we have the first 1/2 of the process pathway mapped out. Light hits a matrix of cells in the 'sensor' which then encodes the sensory data as chemical signals which then side-effect a neural net.

Kindly explain -- using physics -- to YOURSELF how you got from a changed states to perception of light in your mind. The experience of consciousness is not a mystery nor is it 'obscure'. Follow up is to note that it is equally wrongheaded to ask if a rock or something/someone else is conscious.

Can you explain what you experience in terms of known science and please no hand waving about 'the most complex structure in universe'. The said structure changes states. There is no 'projection room' in the "neural net". There is no decoding final stage that takes matrix input and maps it to a 2D representation (generative AI) etc.

Hopelessly ignorant of DNS beyond basics. I see this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_recursive_name_server and there is a list of DNS servers. temporarely··on We Just Witnessed the Biggest Supreme Court Power Grab Since 1803
That would be a component of a more modern system but I remain convinced that static functional groupings are systemically erroneous. Arguably the entire political parties approach is boneheaded as well. Entrenched structures and groups. How do we prevent this from happening while insuring sane collective governance with reasonable continuity. That is the question.
temporarely··on We Just Witnessed the Biggest Supreme Court Power Grab Since 1803
The core issue is that the Masonic trilateral structure - legislative, judiciary, & executive - is showing its age. The problem is fundamentally structural.

We have generally unqualified representatives drafting ambiguous regulatory laws that then need to be interpreted by some entity, whether the courts (whose expertise is law) or the agencies (whose expertise is not law).

There are two related difficult problems in governance models: entrenched bureaucracies and security services. Specialized tasks that require professionals who can naturally form a political block and subsequently political will and clout. However their responsible roles are by definition 'professional'.

I think we need to start thinking of a more modern political structure, specially in light of communication and information technology available. This debate over who is overreaching and who gets to get bribed or what ideological faction will get to interpret is a futile endeavor.

The core issue is 'legal and political consensus that is informed by expert insights'. As an example (to get you thinking) more 'real-time' engagements between different branches of the system could address all of the issues that SC or its decision opponents are arguing about.
