tempaccount5050··on The hypocrisy of cyberlibertarianism
Because a billion people can share the file at once. It's tough math to do, but I can't believe transporting physical media all over the world is really better.
tempaccount5050··on The hypocrisy of cyberlibertarianism
No, store it on your computer/phone/iPod. But honestly data centers are probably very efficient for this. I'm not going to do the math, but storing data on flash and serving it to billions of people probably is efficient if I had to guess.
tempaccount5050··on The hypocrisy of cyberlibertarianism
I've always thought that the hippie environmental types wanting data (music) stored as plastic was ironic. "I prefer my music to be made of petrochemicals and trees, the way it ought to be." I get it, but I still think it's funny.
tempaccount5050··on A recent experience with ChatGPT 5.5 Pro
Ok let's make math illegal and burn down the data centers I guess. Idk what to tell you, but we will adapt and new roles will be created. Just like every single tool and piece of tech that came before. LLM manager? Fine.
tempaccount5050··on A recent experience with ChatGPT 5.5 Pro
Are you a cutting edge research scientist or something? Everyone I know works in the same domain every day. The problems are the same. People aren't solving brand new problems to humanity every day. We make budgets and look at ticket counts. Roll out patches. Replace hardware. Upgrade software packages. Make a new dashboard to track a project. I guess if every day is a completely novel thing for you, ok. I feel like the goalposts have moved to an absolutely ridiculous place. Oh no, I won't have a bunch of random error log numbers memorized anymore? Who gives a shit. I just want to afford a place to live so I can play my guitar and make something good for dinner. Maybe I'm just old, but I don't see why the average person needs to be a fuckin genius problem solver.
tempaccount5050··on OpenAI's WebRTC problem
It's way better than the old powershell modules imo. What don't you like?
tempaccount5050··on AWS North Virginia data center outage – recovery to take hours
Lots of proposals to build them near Lake Michigan recently but the residents of Wisconsin only want auto parts stores and paper mills. They've been completely demonized. Cities and counties are passing no data center laws even though it's the perfect place for it.
tempaccount5050··on How do I deal with memory leaks? (2022)
Holy shit, I didn't know that.

Circa 2004 I was in college and took a C++ class. I spent an entire week trying to get my final project working and couldn't for the life of me figure out what was wrong. It was only a few hundred lines and was like an employee record type demo. I spent about 3 hours one on one with the professor trying to figure it out. I remember that removing the auto_ptr stuff and using regular pointers would make it work (because the problem has to be with the pointer stuff right?), but part of the requirements was that I had to use auto_ptr because it was safer or whatever.

We tried compiling it on different systems and nothing would get it to work. He ended up giving me a C on the project admitting "it should work, but that doesn't cut it in the business world" or something to that effect which really pissed me off.

I just had a chat with GPT about this and that was almost certainly what was causing my program to segfault.

std::auto_ptr<int> a(new int(5));

std::auto_ptr<int> b = a; // a becomes null

Wild.

I haven't updated mine. I have a firewall and it's not exposed to the Internet. Need a key to SSH in. Same with my public facing server. Almost none of these exploits are "drop everything now and patch" unless you are somehow exposing yourself stupidly.
tempaccount5050··on Canvas online again as ShinyHunters threatens to leak schools’ data
And who exactly do you think is going to verify 100s of thousands of emails this way dude?
tempaccount5050··on The bottleneck was never the code
Recruiters.
tempaccount5050··on Vibe coding and agentic engineering are getting closer than I'd like
It's not a struggle for me to walk 15 miles to work every day, I could easily do it. It's just makes no sense when I have a car.
tempaccount5050··on Vibe coding and agentic engineering are getting closer than I'd like
Almost no one works on stuff like that, so congrats on finding a corner case I guess.
tempaccount5050··on The bottleneck was never the code
That's not at all what I'm saying and I don't know where you're getting that from. I'm not trying to stop anyone. I'm trying to be an extra paddle. I'm happy to do nothing iff I try to help but get boxed out. I have no problem just riding in the boat and saying "hey, there's rocks up there" or "This seam looks leaky, maybe patch it". I'm not here to fight people or egos.
tempaccount5050··on The bottleneck was never the code
I mean, they hire me for a reason, whatever that may be. I want to do a good job and carry out the task because I want to get hired again by them or whatever agency is pimping me out. I've seen a lot of shit and that's my value. Whether or not the team wants to help me succeed is their political thing. And that's not invisible to management either.
tempaccount5050··on The bottleneck was never the code
And I totally respect that, I get it, I really do. But it's really obvious when people are being territorial and any contractor will tell you this happens every time. I suspect that a lot of the times, I'm hired to "teach them a lesson" in that "Hey, velocity sucks and I'm hearing a lot of whining, so if you don't like doing it, this guy will" and people snap into shape.
tempaccount5050··on The bottleneck was never the code
It's 100% denial/ego. I've been a contractor longer than I'd like and it's the exact same response I see when I join a new team. The team complains they have too much work and can't get anything done, so their manager pulls me in. Suddenly, they don't want to give anything up. I'm actually in the middle of this right now. The team "is swamped" yet somehow, they are able to argue that almost everything I can handle is best handled by them and they don't need help. Fine by me, I'll sit around and get paid. But it smells exactly the same. They don't want to admit that A - they are replaceable and their work isn't that unique and B - they are the bottleneck, not the process or workload.
tempaccount5050··on Why TUIs are back
So just tell it html only if you want.
tempaccount5050··on Why TUIs are back
Not anymore it isn't. "Claude, make this a web app".
tempaccount5050··on AI uses less water than the public thinks
The plans are for Lake Michigan adjacent cities. It's a complete non issue and probably the best place in the country to build them.
tempaccount5050··on Ask Jeeves Shut Down
I think that and dogpile were the best in that short area before google took off as the clear winner.
tempaccount5050··on Claude Code refuses requests or charges extra if your commits mention "OpenClaw"
None of those things require an always on token burner. I'm not trying to be rude, but do you think that's the only way to present relevant information to an LLM or something? It's literally the least efficient way to do it.
tempaccount5050··on AI uses less water than the public thinks
Why? We have 27 quadrillion gallons in lake michigan alone. You could pump millions of gallons a day out and if it just stopped raining it would take 3 million years to drain it. Stop listening to Charlie Berens.
tempaccount5050··on AI uses less water than the public thinks
People are losing their minds in Wisconsin saying proposed data centers will drain lake michigan. I'm not kidding.
tempaccount5050··on Pro-Iran crew turns DDoS into shakedown as Ubuntu.com stays down
Maybe they're still mad about systemd.
tempaccount5050··on Claude Code refuses requests or charges extra if your commits mention "OpenClaw"
Do you have some examples?
tempaccount5050··on Claude Code refuses requests or charges extra if your commits mention "OpenClaw"
I think this makes sense. I don't understand what problem OpenClaw is solving or what the use case is other than just burning a shit ton of tokens.
tempaccount5050··on Opus 4.7 knows the real Kelsey
Thinking that you can hide from it is absurd. Your country has been spying on you for decades. The Internet and phones are tapped. That game is so so so over and has been for a long time. I'd rather live free and deal with the consequences than hide in my basement with a tinfoil hat on. In fact, I was fired this year for my political views. Got doxxed at work. Now I'm somewhere better. Sometimes it's for the best.
tempaccount5050··on Claude Code refuses requests or charges extra if your commits mention "OpenClaw"
I've played with them plenty and they're not even close as far as speed or intelligence. It's like comparing a bike to an MRAP.
tempaccount5050··on He asked AI to count carbs 27000 times. It couldn't give the same answer twice
Yes.
