tellarin··on Microsoft.Recognizers.Text: numbers, units, and date/time in multiple languages
I'm one of the maintainers of this project. Comments, suggestions, or contributions are very welcome! Specially regarding expansion to support new languages/cultures.

We're looking at multiple ways to improve the project.

tellarin··on Is DALL-E 2 ‘gluing things together’ without understanding their relationships?
“ It actually knows what a giraffe is.” -> It maybe has a sense of what a giraffe looks like.
tellarin··on Introduction to Microsoft Excel (1992) [video]
A significant part of the team is still located there.
tellarin··on When was the last time you saw a laptop with a CD drive?
Right now. On my desk. It is an old MacBook Pro, but still in regular use.
tellarin··on Some tiny personal programs I've written
That's definitely not fair either, as it disproportionally benefits those with more funds. Which only leads to wider inequality.
tellarin··on Ask HN: Was NATO expansion a big mistake?
Nope. Why would it be? If anything, the current Russian invasion is just going to push other countries to join. Georgia and Moldova just applied. And popular support for it in Sweden and Finland is at an all time high.
tellarin··on Addressing Common Concerns with a World Without Timezones
In practice the west of the country uses their own local time. Even if not official. But China is not so “wide”, so even then, the difference is just two hours.
tellarin··on Someone Dead Ruined My Life Again. (CGP Grey)
Great notes on how the "historic record" happens and how noise gets in and propagates through it.
tellarin··on Briton to be deported from Singapore for refusing to wear mask
He's already been deported and is barred from re-entering Singapore. Deservedly so, in my opinion.
tellarin··on Is training an AI on public sources breaking copyright?
In general I agree with you. But it gets trickier once you look into more automated content generation. It's been shown already that in natural language generation, as an example, big model frequently regurgitate full text passages. Similarly in computer code generation.
tellarin··on Microsoft is bringing Android apps to Windows 11
WeChat actually has a Windows native client.
tellarin··on Huawei to sell phone unit for $15B to Shenzhen government, Digital China, others
The title is very misleading. Huawei is only planning to divest its budget brand - Honor.

Huawei's flagship phones are sold under its own brand and they'll focus on those.

tellarin··on Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia sign Nagorno-Karabakh peace deal
Seems more than a coincidence to me that a peace deal was signed so quickly after Azerbaijan downed a Russian helicopter that was not even near the disputed area.
tellarin··on First AI model that translates 100 languages without relying on English
This claim seems a bit exaggerated. Microsoft Research Asia, as one example, has been doing neural machine translation for a large number of languages without relying in English for quite some time; and models are used in production scenarios too.
tellarin··on Ask HN: How many tabs do you have open?
I have 153 tabs right now. All split into different windows representing "sessions". Personal, by topic, and a last one for breaks (where this HN tab is and it will be closed in ~6 min). I have 19 such session windows at the moment. And my browser is set to re-open state on launch.
tellarin··on Trump administration announces overhaul of H1B visa program requiring higher pay
Can you offer any links? As far as I know, becoming a citizen is next to impossible. Also, one would have to renounce any other citizenship.
tellarin··on 'Mythical' Aston Martin Bulldog supercar located and under restoration
As I said last time, can’t stop thinking that Elon Musk has seen it as a child and it became sort of an obsession/inspiration.

tellarin··on How I got my Japanese permanent residency
Estonia has a Digital Nomad visa - https://e-resident.gov.ee/nomadvisa/

And I remember seeing somewhere else that some other countries in Southeast Asia and the Caribbean either have similar visas or were planning for them.

tellarin··on WeChat ban would be a devastating blow to Chinese families in the US
Not only to Chinese families in the US, but to anyone internationally with personal connections in China.

Everything revolves around WeChat, from social chats to interacting with interest groups/hobbyists, shops, banks/money transfers of different sizes...

Not to mention foreigners that are long-term residents in China, like myself.

tellarin··on US to ban transactions with ByteDance and WeChat in 45 days
This also potentially has many ramifications in different industries. Tencent (owner of WeChat) is a big investor in media and entertainment companies. One side effect, for example, is blocking financial payments to Riot Games, Epic Games, Fortnite, and half the gaming industry.

Has anyone seem any details on what exactly it will cover?

tellarin··on TikTok and the Great Firewall of America
I'll now need a new VPN to access sites in China, just as I do to access sites outside of it...
tellarin··on Trump banning TikTok/WeChat from operating in 45 days if not sold by companies
This also potentially has many ramifications in different industries. Tencent (owner of WeChat) is a big investor in media and entertainment companies. One side effect, for example, is blocking financial payments to Riot Games, Epic Games, Fortnite, and half the gaming industry.

tellarin··on The death of corporate research labs
Microsoft Research is one of the biggest and most well known industry research labs and it's been around since 1991, so I don't think the comparison to Apple applies.
