tellarin··on 'How do you reduce a national dish to a powder?': the world of crisp flavours
You were actually correct. See note [e] in that table.
tellarin··on 'How do you reduce a national dish to a powder?': the world of crisp flavours
I know how you feel. As an European living in Beijing, China, it really blows my mind that, depending on where I go within the city, it can take me a 3h drive here. Not even talking about remote rural areas or state/province distances...
tellarin··on 'How do you reduce a national dish to a powder?': the world of crisp flavours
This is incorrect. China's landmass is larger than the US (including Alaska). The US is only larger if you include coastal and territorial waters, clearly not landmass area.
tellarin··on Ask HN: Do you think AI is threat to developers job?
I don't see how it could be a threat.

For the simpler work, AI tools are as much of a threat as frameworks or existing code generators.

For higher level work, AI tools can be great assistants, but they are very far from being able to understanding large existing code bases, inter-dependencies, side-effects, non-functional requirements, etc.

Not to mention that most software development projects fail for non-technical reasons, which code-focused models also can't help with.

Clickbaity title. This is not about Meta having Facebook/Instagram/Threads in China, but about it selling some hardware via a partnership with Chinese company Tencent.

Minor comment, but I don't get where some people take that China is smaller than the USA. China is the 2nd largest country in the world and its landmass is ˜2% larger than the US (including Alaska).

India though, even as 7th in the world, is smaller than the US, with about 32% of its area.

Population-wise India has now surpassed China, and both beat the US (3rd in the world) by over 1B people each.

tellarin··on Aya: An open science project to build open multilingual models and datasets
Project Aya is a multi-institution collaborative project to accelerate multi-lingual AI and make sure diverse languages are properly represented in this wave of large language models.

The first release is targeting 101 languages and we're 7 weeks away from starting to package it.

I'm one of the contributor to the project and all data and model will be open-sourced. We're looking for more contributors across many languages! It’s quite easy to contribute.

No knowledge of ML/AI required and you can make a big difference for the languages you’re fluent in! Please consider contributing!

More details about the project also at: https://txt.cohere.com/aya-multilingual/

tellarin··on Ceasing print publication of ACM journals and transactions
ACM doesn't charge you for publishing papers in their journals, conferences, and to end online in their digital library.

Though papers accepted through a conference, mostly require one of the authors registering for such conference; which seems fair to me as the effort to organize them is non-trivial.

tellarin··on How not to hire a North Korean plant posing as a techie
Weird. I was not asked for any drug test for my Chinese work visa (only the Aids one).
tellarin··on Fuyu-8B: A multimodal architecture for AI agents
And the project is looking for contributors across many languages!

Full disclaimer: I'm a contributor and a big believer in the project.

Not sure if there's an actual reason. But 59 is the actual starting level that matters for software developers.

tellarin··on Ask HN: Who are you following on Bluesky?
Great question. It seems hardly anyone is there or posts actively. I currently only follow two of the people I used to follow on Twitter, can't find anyone else.
tellarin··on Google Chrome pushes browser history-based ad targeting
The site has been solid for me for years and it does have content archiving and search.

Not sure of which site issue you're talking about.

tellarin··on Apple Is Dependent on China's Economy and That's a Big Problem
Low quality rambling in the article. You can make the same claims about any company that produces and sells their products in China. The size of its market is already a factor in itself.

Using Apple as an example, even if they move all manufacturing out China, would they stop selling their products there and give up on 1/4 of their profits? This would be extremely unlikely. And unwise for any business.

tellarin··on I paid for Sublime Text
I don't have a problem with paying for software I use and like if the price and their terms are reasonable, which Sublime mostly is.

However, my personal issue with Sublime is the fact some basic requested editor functionality hasn't been implemented in years. You can see multiple such issues opened against it.

And I'm not talking about IDE-like stuff, just basic editor features, like having multiple rows of tabs when you have many files open.

tellarin··on Can LLMs learn from a single example?
GPT4 relies heavily on human curated data. Both for specific domains and for instruction following. Any new model that tries to go beyond it will also likely rely on such data.
tellarin··on WVU recommends cutting 169 faculty positions, 32 majors – WV MetroNews
Hope they don't cut their little tram system. I wish more places would use that idea.
tellarin··on GPT Unicorn has drawn a unicorn
I'm actually working on this area. I don't see any clear breakthroughs yet, but this is a very exciting area.

There is a lot that is not clearly understood about some of the emergent-style abilities of these models or where growth by scaling will hit a limit.

So looking into reasoning, what they can and can't do, and what tools/designs, can provide benefits has great potential to inform the next generation of models.

tellarin··on GPT Unicorn has drawn a unicorn
Yes, the models are updated officially around every three months, with a notice you can still use the previous version for a time until it is decommissioned.

Some people claim there are also unannounced changes, but I can't vouch for that.

The daily variation is likely due to temperature. To make the response less repetitive.

tellarin··on Japanese words of Portuguese origin
Rodrigues, with an 's', and Fernandes are the most common Portuguese influenced surnames in Goa, if I recall correctly.

Such names ending in 'z' are more likely Spanish in origin.

tellarin··on Threads has lost half of its daily active users a week after launch
from day one you can see the people you've followed. Just go to your profile and click "following".

As for the general implementation, I'm with you on the problems of lacking a feed with only posts from those you follow. But according to the Threads team, this was a minimally-viable-product and features like that are coming soon.

Other than that, it's been very smooth in my experience. And much less full of crap that Twitter. Though that's likely due to it being brand new.

tellarin··on How Integers and Floats Work – zine (paid)
Julia does some great work distilling topics into cartoon-looking zines and this one is great. It's an awesome way to describe the topic to non-tech-heavy folks (and for the nerdy too /wink).

As a paid item, not sure how interested folks here would be though.
