Senior Developer Relations Engineer at IQGeo. Looking for Senior Software Engineer roles in Python.

I have a Physics PhD, am a Linux user, I used Python and C/C++/Cython extensions to do lots of data analysis for a PhD at Imperial College London from Jan 2011-Dec 2014, working with complex systems (mathematical graphs, 3D graphics incl OpenGL, computational geometry, and physics/stat mech). As of Feb 2014, I am also a published author in Linux Format magazine (issues 180 and 182.)

I have previously worked for what3words, an Oscilloscope company in Cambridgeshire (writing GUI, drivers), a software services company in north London, and a networking hardware company in Cambridge. I stood for Parliament for the Lib Dems in the UK general elections in 2015 and 2017.

tehwalrus··on Scientists say we’re on the cusp of a carbon dioxide–recycling revolution
> They also seem to preserve the number of total CO2 molecules around.

Of course, they are chemical reactions. Did you think they would destroy atoms?

The idea here is to make renewable hydrocarbons: when you burn them, they are only putting CO2 that came from the atmosphere back, not releasing new CO2 from fossil fuels.

It assumes that you power this fuel-generator with renewable energy, of course.

The UK.

(I was actually shocked that Americans don't always get paid holiday.)

Note that we also have 6 months paid maternity leave, and 1 weeks paid paternity leave, with both of those extendable on a lower pay rate.

New legislation from the 2010-2015 government allows parents to share this leave, even if they work at different companies, and start/stop it during the time when it would be taken (so mum can take the first 3 months off, then dad take a month off, then mum again, etc). Sorry for the hetero-normative example, adoptive parents also get paid leave in the same way.

No, dark matter does interact with other matter: but only through gravitational forces, not electromagnetic or nuclear ones.
tehwalrus··on Cambridge Analytica Files ‘I created Steve Bannon’s psychological warfare tool’
> 1. Obama's 2008 election absolutely bragged about their use of social media to win. I vividly remember multiple long articles in the NYTimes talking about how they exploited new tech to reach voters.

Talking to people using their social media profiles, while identifying yourself as from a political campaign, is worlds away from what Cambridge Analytica are doing: which is not remotely open or honest.

tehwalrus··on Sorry, Adults, No New Neurons for Your Aging Brains
The old hypothesis was that many things — famously anti-depressants and excercise — promote neurogenesis. This study is refuting that whole bank of research, which was based on indirect observations.
tehwalrus··on Continuing frequency deviation in the Continental European Power System
Energy conservation. You're pushing (literally) against the electrical workload of the connected circuits (places where people have plugged a device into a socket and made a loop). When there's more to push against, your steam goes less far and your turbine starts to slow. You can then apply more energy and push the system back up to speed.

tehwalrus··on Online shopping in Africa doesn’t work because of shipping and billing forms
See some of the other comments on this thread. The algorithm isn't open source, seems to be the main (valid) criticism.
tehwalrus··on Online shopping in Africa doesn’t work because of shipping and billing forms
They actually refunded everyone who bought a "one word", and are focusing on the (free to use) 3 word addresses. And it works offline too (always has).

What3words is a deterministic hash of the gps coords.

tehwalrus··on Online shopping in Africa doesn’t work because of shipping and billing forms
What3words works offline in a free (as in beer) app. They want to monetise by charging the courier companies who save money in this precise case.
tehwalrus··on Online shopping in Africa doesn’t work because of shipping and billing forms
Much maligned on Hacker News though it is, this is precisely the killer application that what3words is good for.

It works offline on cheap android devices with GPS for discovery, which can also be done with a satellite map. Directions via an intent into another app with nav is now built into the main apps.

In fact, it's already used for doctors finding women in labour in improvised settlements in South Africa.

Disclosure: former employee, who wishes them all the luck in the world getting people to use it!

That makes it sound like you can sue the FCC for not meeting their legal obligations here. Is that viable?

tehwalrus··on France to ban mobile phones in primary, junior and middle schools
Hmm, that's not the comparison here. Wanderers, travellers (especially those in youth hostels) were often doing that activity in part to meet a wide variety of people, something they were less able to do staying in one place at that time.

(Edit: I should mention that I'm citing my Dad in my head here, who is an embarrassingly social creature in situations where I would never strike up a conversation. He spent a lot of time travelling around Europe in the 70s staying at youth hostels, e.g. in his university vacations.)

I believe this need is fulfilled by things like Tumblr now, where there are close nit communities centred around specific (often odd) interests and identities, who are vastly geographically spread. The same could be said to an extent for other social networks too, of course, including this website :)

tehwalrus··on Portugal’s radical drug policy is working. Why hasn’t the world copied it?
The grandparent cites the UK, where we have two orders of magnitude fewer firearm deaths per capita[1] with complete prohibition of private handgun ownership. (People can still join a shooting club, which keeps them in a locked cabinet).

tehwalrus··on System76 ME Firmware Updates Plan
The comparison between a person administering an unsecured computer network and a drunk driver has just made my list of legal IT analogies, along side BitTorrent being a car that might be used as the getaway vehicle in a robbery.

Thanks, I really enjoyed reading it!

tehwalrus··on A Map Showing How Much Time It Takes English-Speakers to Learn Foreign Languages
Aaand a glaring hole in my ability to evaluate language learning techniques is revealed to me: I can't actually speak any of the languages in his examples.

Well, at least I mentioned Ms Lomb as well!

tehwalrus··on A Map Showing How Much Time It Takes English-Speakers to Learn Foreign Languages
Lots of people pointing out that languages are hard, the numbers given are for really intensive programmes etc.

Not that I had any success with it, but here is a book/site about how to learn which I found interesting:

https://www.fluentin3months.com

The theory is to start from day 1 with 15 minute real conversations with native speakers (Skype pals). You either pay them or offer them the same in English afterwards. You are not permitted to fall back to another language during the call! This makes you study damn hard between sessions to improve you vocabulary and reduce the awkwardness. Benny (the author) spent months working in Spain and learning no Spanish, and stumbled on this method as a last resort.

It is very similar in spirit (immersion, but not requing presence in a native speaking country) to the Kato Lomb approach:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kató_Lomb

Which is documented in her book "Polyglot". (Cut off from native speakers she used romance novels, which have a very low reading age, dictionaries of the language itself, rather than translation ones, and radio broadcasts, and was so successful that the Russians arrested her as a spy when they took Hungary in WW2, and she addressed a soldier in perfect Russian.)

tehwalrus··on Bitcoin: I am a time-traveler from the future, here to beg you to stop (2013)

tehwalrus··on What to Worry About in This Surreal Bull Market
That ketchup bottle analogy is wonderful, thank you :)
tehwalrus··on The world's most toxic value system (2001)
The central thesis (thar as a toxic value) seems plausible, but his examples are all crazy, and his deduction about economic prosperity is questionable at best.

Look at the UK as an example of somewhere with extreme classism and heredity of employment for hundreds of years, the bit in between the "honourable knights" and the industrial revolution (which happened in the midst of astonishing inequality of wealth and opportunity). If you don't think the Royal carriages plastered with gaudy decoration are about external honour then what are they about exactly?

Also, the idea that the successful societies succeeded because they weren't sexist is proposterous, since the key points in their development happened long before the (start of the) recovery from that awful vice, which still isn't over as the news from Hollywood and Westminster in the last months neatly illustrates.

As others have said, this looks like a post-hoc justification of prejudice, which sadly ruins an interesting idea.
