teen··on Ask HN: Was 20% time a good policy for Google's working culture?
you only hire 1-2 for your team, and it's a longer term commitment
teen··on Google staff rally behind fired AI researcher
Actually, it's more so the other way. If you agree with her firing, you can't say anything or you are a bigot
teen··on Google staff rally behind fired AI researcher
She was, they said her email was not befitting of a manager. Which is clearly true
teen··on Google Photos will end its free unlimited storage in June 2021
I bought a Pixel 1 and never got the free storage of raw photos. Eventually had to export everything to dropbox and convert everything to lower quality within photos. There is no way to fix this.
teen··on Luna – Cloud gaming service
The primary issue is the games catalog, something neither Amazon or Google can crack a dent in
teen··on Typing Is Hard
Plz add dart to your list :)
teen··on Elo sucks – better multiplayer rating systems for smaller games (2019)
This has what dota 2 does. Every win / loss is worth the same points, the games are extremely close in terms of player rank, so and it's a team game so you get more variance than just your individual skill. Players eventually settle close to 50 percent win rate
teen··on Why Developers Hate PHP
good to know, i hadn't fully dug in yet.
teen··on Ask HN: I'm an incoming freshman to college for a CS major, what should I know?
the quality of job you receive is based on 3 categories:

1. being friendly / assuming good intent 2. raw experience coding 3. algorithms / CS

school generally takes care of 3 and a bit of 2. 1 is arguably the most important in transitioning from junior -> senior level and beyond

teen··on Why Developers Hate PHP
I'm using it at a fresh start up. Having used node, internal Google frameworks, python, and dart previously, I would highly recommend PHP for new projects. Laravel is what makes it worth it imo.
teen··on Why Developers Hate PHP
PHP via HHVM + Laravel is a still top choice for new projects imo.
teen··on Ask HN: Advice for passing a FAANG background check with a criminal history
I see... this makes sense
teen··on Every software system used at Gitlab
I've reviewed 4000 line MRs without problems using other tools. It is possible.
teen··on Every software system used at Gitlab
I mean load a pull request from Github (takes <1s) Load one from Gitlab and it takes 10+ sec. Maybe I'm spoiled from using Google's tools previously.
teen··on Every software system used at Gitlab
Gitlab has been pretty great so far, but the code review tooling is so poor I think I need to look elsewhere. The pull request pages take forever to load, they can't handle pull requests with over 800 lines well at all. It will collapse files with over 100-200 lines of changes for seemingly no reason (hiding the comments within them). You can't ignore whitespace in diffs, and the comments disappear from the diff if they push new commits, you need to look at them in the overview again.
teen··on Google ends plans for smart city in Toronto
How is supply and demand not the major factor here?
teen··on Ask HN: Advice for passing a FAANG background check with a criminal history
bizarre they use a polygraph test when it's known to be psudeoscientific
teen··on Please Fund More Science
Wouldn't these investors want a return on their investment? Is it possible to invest without profiting off of the pandemic?
teen··on Software Engineering at Google
as someone who worked previously at google, and went back to the start up world working with php mysql, this is not true at all
teen··on SuperShuttle is going out of business
It's because LAX is too small to fit all the traffic. It's gridlocked in the entire airport at peak times. You can literally walk the entire terminal loop in 20 mins, it's like 4 lanes, and it gets the most traffic in America IIRC. It's the biggest airport clusterfuck in america.
teen··on My Time at Snap
Tough break. I also spoke w/ a Snap Recruiter around the same time as you, and was offered that ridic amount of equity- they were talking about 600k for L5, or over 1m for L6. I felt like this was a huge red flag that their equity was bullshit. And that vesting schedule is an obvious scam. Reading Glassdoor is nothing but stories like this one. Sorry you went through it. None of this surprises me, Snap Leadership seems like nothing but jerks.

teen··on Uber Revenue Growth Slows, Losses Persist as 2019 IPO Draws Near
Not sure how all three of drivers, Uber's profit, and passengers could all be losing. I think passengers are making out quite well atm. I haven't owned a car since Uber has been around, and get chaffeured around at a super affordable price.
teen··on Evan Spiegel’s Imperious Style Made Snapchat a Success Until Users Fled
pretty sure the design changes were to monetize it, not improve it.
teen··on Anthony Levandowski: Pronto AI
120 million dollar exit package and still a jerk.
teen··on Why REST Sucks
RPC is the way to live
teen··on Lyft Files for IPO
uber added this like 2 years ago
