teekert··on Show HN: Bodily Oddities
When I slowly shake my shoulders I feel and hear air going from one lung into the other. But not 100% sure if that is what it is.
teekert··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
I am inclusive in that sense and enjoy both AI and non-AI content, and will post both.
teekert··on Nine coding harnesses vs. your laptop
Fun reference I tested on 32 GB ram laptop with no extra GPU: llama.cpp: “what is ls”, almost immediate starts answering at one ~word/sec. Ask opencode with same model (some gwen e4b or something) to check what’s in its working directory: 20 min to response.
teekert··on Show HN: What if the speed of light was 5 km/h?
On some more testing, I don't seem to alter direction, just suddenly start to accelerate again. Ah well, it worked mostly.
teekert··on Show HN: What if the speed of light was 5 km/h?
Hmm, by some bug my back arrow first slows me down from approaching c, but then will sudddenly spead me back up (while going backwards), so I get stuck in a dark world. (Firefox on Linux).

Edit, maybe it's because the speed shift is so coarse I cross past 0 km/h from back to forwards and reverse too fast...

Other than this, very very nice. Love this kind of thing for developing intuiting outside the normal range in which we experience the laws of Physics. Well done.

teekert··on iPhone Duo
Looking forward to the first broken screens, and Apple's official reply:

"You're folding it wrong."

teekert··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
Hey that’s a Fermi Paradox solution.
teekert··on Every Novel Is Boring–Until It Isn't
I’ve had that as well haha. I have read many books for about 50%. I try not to feel guilty about it. Glass half full, right?
teekert··on GrapheneOS Overhauled Default Apps and Secure Clipboard
They are really creating a lot of buzz recently. I love it, I hope they succeed beyond just us geeks here. It is imho imperative for a fair and balanced technological society that it retains the means for truly private and secure communications.

My devices help me think, and my thoughts are my own. That is a fundamental condition of human-hood. Sure we can change that, if that's what we want, but do we? If we do, do we make it a conscious choice per person? Or do we let big tech/corporatocracy dictate what it is to be human?

teekert··on Every novel is boring until it isn't
For me there are novels with such big pay-offs that they are worth 100s of pages of setup to me. I usually only start them when I read online that they are worth it. I had this with Atlas Shrugged (500-600 pages of setup?).

Some are simply such a nice world (and indeed writing style) that they don’t even really need a Volta. I had that with the Commonwealth Saga by Hamilton. I just wanted it to go on and on (and it does for >2400 pages). (I was sadly disappointed by the follow-ups which are much less "sci"). Same with the Bobiverse books, eagerly awaiting part 6, although I still want to be in that world, it also feels like it should come to some beautiful end before dragging on too long...

teekert··on Every novel is boring until it isn't
Yeah same. I recently read the whole series to my son after he had begged me to stop after a couple of pages about 2 years ago. I told him: just keep your mind open for 100 pages.

The start is so cold, and weird. You can only feel the warmth and beauty that is coming on your second read, and part 1 takes some time to pay-off. What I like about Harry Potter is that many things are not what they seem when later looking back. It's clever like that.

On my own, 20 years ago, I couldn’t stop after starting. Sure the first chapters are a bit boring and different from the body of the books, but I have always given books about 100 pages to grab me, never consciously though about a Volta though, just almost always started to enjoy books after some time.

The follow-ups in a series can be enticing because of part one, but sometimes, as I had with 3 body problem, they disappoint so much or are so different that I just stop.

teekert··on The pencil case model of creativity
Yeah. Was hoping Strange New Worlds would be more TNG like but with ethical dilemmas of our time (ie black mirror but much more optimistic) but, meh. Not as meh as Discovery, but the Orville does it better.
teekert··on A/I shuts down
I think everybody should read the two Economic Hitmen books by John Perkins.
teekert··on QBittorrent breaks out of sandbox to commit crimes
It’s mostly the anti AI crowd that thinks that people that work LLMs think this way. I’ve never met anyone that actually does think this way.
teekert··on Git hosting that never leaves Europe
I don't like vibe coding myself, but I love AI assisted development, my new bottleneck is no longer the search for syntax and features but my understanding. Am I welcome on your platform?
teekert··on How Fairphone built the Fairphone Gen 6+
Thanx for the thoughtful reply. You’re pulling me off the fence.
teekert··on Mom gets 6-month suspended sentence for letting 5-year-old walk to the pond
Yeah bit strange remark. Many people I know drive thousands of km for their summer holiday.
teekert··on How Fairphone built the Fairphone Gen 6+
The GOS people really spend a lot of time of energy showing the worst sides of FairPhone to the world. I think it is because the conscientious technology user is really interested in the combination of ethically sourced, repairable hardware and a security and privacy (from big tech) focussed OS. Tbh I also like that sliders to switch to a simple mode. A well, we can’t have it all. I do prefer de-googled + freedom to do what I want over security (to a degree). So… I’m on the fence. As many vocal people are. A second hand pixel 10 is also a “green” choice.

I do have the feeling that many non-nerds can express the difference between all mentioned attributes, many just like FairPhone as an ethical phone. It’s not that simple, I agree.

teekert··on “Next-token predictor” is the wrong mental model for LLMs
It’s written in Claudish, or perhaps a human who has been reading too much Claudish recently. I am starting to become allergic to Claudish. Not there fully yet — but it’s at a tipping point genuinely worth exploring and worth being precise about.
teekert··on Ask HN: Advice on Migrating from 1Password?
I've been off vaultwarden for 2 years now I guess, but I remember that having to share cedentials with my wife I had to make an organization in the admin interface. Then add us both to that org. There was no sharing of just 1 credential, or a group or something like that. It feels like a more formal system, perhaps better at home in an enterprise.

But maybe that has changed in the meantime.

teekert··on How Fairphone built the Fairphone Gen 6+
Privacy and security from what is the question. From big tech or from criminals and governments that take your device and plug it into cellebrite machines?

I for one prefer to be protected from big tech. Sure GrapheneOS does both, but Apple does not.

teekert··on Can I opt out of my input or output data being used for training?
Just now the sentence:

“Vibe (Teams): Administrators can disable data training usage for the entire organization.”

Was added to tfa. And I now see an org wide toggle where there was none before! Sadly it was on so I hope no users submitted stuff in the mean time, but it’s something!

teekert··on Can I opt out of my input or output data being used for training?
You are right! They must have just now switched this back, I also have the toggle now! It was turned on sadly but it’s something.
teekert··on Can I opt out of my input or output data being used for training?
Ok it (org wide toggle) just (24h after posting this) returned and the docs were changed again! They now include the text:

"Vibe (Teams): Administrators can disable data training usage for the entire organization."

That’s nice! Except that it was on for my entire org so I’ll be checking if they didn’t store anything first thing tomorrow. I wonder what changed their minds.

teekert··on Claude outage – Resolved
My allergy to Claudish is also rapidly progressing. I think it’s now at a boundary that is genuinely worth exploring. Oh no!
teekert··on Mom gets 6-month suspended sentence for letting 5-year-old walk to the pond
I once walked into a drive through in Texas (Galveston) with a group of scientists there for a conference (because main restaurant was closed), we almost got shot (no not really but people felt very very threatened and threatened us)!
teekert··on Mom gets 6-month suspended sentence for letting 5-year-old walk to the pond
The US is extremely car focused, which they often don't really realize. Things that are normal here (like everybody has a bike) conflicts with their cyclers vs drivers culture. Such a distinction simply does not exist here. Instead we have roads that are red with signs "Cars are guests". Or indeed city centers where cars aren't allowed.

When I go to the US I'm often surprised that you can't get to things that are only a km away by foot because a road is blocking you, no way to cross it.

teekert··on Elevated Errors for Multiple Models
Haha, I was more like: I have to think alone now. But I get the feeling, as someone who has always made a point of using only foss on my own machines (own the means of production so to say), this is a weird time. I don't like it, I hope soon local models get good. But in the mean time... We have this... dependency.
