teekert··on One Year of Sponsored Servo Development
One could argue that effectively Blink is also not open source. At any rate users don't have power over it, as witnessed by the manifest v3 stuff jammed down our throats.
teekert··on Why I didn’t sign the Fields medallists’ letter
I think it is easy to just roll of a local maximum, however, you may get stuck in a local minimum.

I kid, of course, but I do wonder where the use of local "maximum" comes from, what is maximum there? Why do you not see this as a landscape of hills and valleys where marbles with certain energies may indeed get stuck in deep enough holes... Of course, I just assume and picture gravity pointing down in that landscape, but hey. I'm human, I feel it is expected of me.

Ah, you must be too young to have experienced early Internet Explorer, which attempted just this.
teekert··on Roof ushered in a new era for full-text helmet
Not sure if the term "full-text helmet" is proof of AI slop, just human sloppiness on the part of the French makers of the site, or that it stands out because of my unfamiliarity with the English language. But the concept looks nice regardless.

Edit: Later is says: "... major segment of motorcycle hhelmets ..." so it's just an extremely sloppy translation, I can't see an LLM making such mistakes, I guess it's proof of human sloppiness (or proof of a prompt: "Add some errors so people won't think this is all genAI". What a time to be alive that one can have such thoughts.)

teekert··on Small programming tricks
This is interesting, I also do this, it will not let me remember the commands, but, I will learn what is possible and roughly how. And in this day and age that is more important. Just like stamping knowledge into your head also became less important (but not 0 important) with books and the internet.
teekert··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Just want to chip in: I love you "yanks", not so much your politics and your imperialistic tendencies, but nearly all Americans I met were nothing but kind (coast to coast, left or right).

The "Common Foe" principle at work.
teekert··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
"Radical Farmer Leaders" are mentioned as stimulating these actions today.
teekert··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
I think national news indeed is somewhat carefully suggesting farmers (ie [0]), actually it looks like it is escalating and they burning hay now. This article speaks of "Radical Farmer Leaders".

teekert··on Dario, Please
It all comes down to " Privatize profits, socialize losses." It's the American way.

Here it is: "We warned you you should have regulated us! Now this mess is your fault and responsibility!"

Previously (~2008) it was "We're too big to fail, save us to save the economy!"

teekert··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Yes it changed, first it reduced the transparency in many places, most notably in notifications, and made the glass dark. Now it makes the glass just a black plastic, but also in the launcher, where dark icons don't pop out anymore.

The old setting was the perfect balance for me. Ah well, iPhone 12 mini is nearly dead, am eyeballing something with GrapheneOS anyway...

teekert··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
“Hurd Linux”? Maybe leave that judgement to Torvalds.

Canonical is a company they do what the CEO wants. And you are free to do what you want.

Quick question: are the fruits of your labor mostly given away for free?

teekert··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
What happened is that the accessibility setting “reduce transparency” which indeed used to reduce transparency and made glass backgrounds darker, now makes them fully black. So dark icons don’t come out of the background anymore. What we got back is a slider that does not make the glass darker, just more opaque. But notifications are still white on light glass. So it really got worse for me.

In my head the RV was parked and the VR provides a virtual office in the small space :)

Jeez, it's an accessibility feature and they just turned it off!

I don't mind liquid glass and can handle the transparency mostly, but the notifications are just god-awful and difficult to read (white on light glass, using dark mode, who comes up with this stuff?).

But reducing transparency is a much harder setting now (should be "removing transparency"), I don't like it anymore, it also messes with the wallpaper. The previous setting was just right for me. Now the app squares are just black, very bad with dark icons.

teekert··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Hmm, got the liquid glass slider, put it all the way to the right, but still lost a lot of contrast in my notifications...
teekert··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Not cinema size, and not with your poor eyes focused on "infinite". And not any of this on a plane, or a train, or a self driving car, or an RV.
teekert··on Claude is a Contrarian
I have in claude.md and it has in it's memory that it is my thinking partner. I don't want any action until I explicitly tell it to do so. And I don't want fancy dialogs because the options disappear when you dismiss them... Just recently Claude wrote some bash and changed 3 files even though it was in Plan Mode! It's maddening sometimes. It wastes so many tokens with stuff I have explicitly told it not to do. Sometimes I'll even add to a prompt "remember we're just thinking this through".
teekert··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
Great "elaboration" (actually it's an "example"), indeed pulling everything into the political dimension is one of the concerning things regarding anything Linux nowadays, imho. Next up: DHH!
teekert··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
ok, that's concerning, if you post it here I'll vote for it (after confirming).
teekert··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
Yeah, shouldn't have called it legacy, perhaps OG would have been more appropriate.

Rush? This is an interim release (95% or so only tracks LTS's) that is not even out yet... Go file a bug reports if you have some time.
teekert··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
Right?! There is so much of this! In my country, for financial products, there needs to be a very clear label with some obligatory fields (we don't allow pharma commercials, but I think Americans know this as the details rattled off after a pharma commercial). It's time we get this for any tech. Companies just let you opt-out, but some weasel words in the terms and conditions let them still do 90% what they did before you hit the switch.
teekert··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
It's a complete shadow economy, users don't want it and mostly don't know it. But sometimes it surfaces, ie we had a public gathering in my village about the plans to restructure one of our main streets, since people don't feel safe walking an biking there naturally we want it 1 way or 30 km/u. In response rhe person from the municipality whipped up some graphs with speed profiles along the street as it is now. Naturally I ask how they get that data and he says "you can just order it online, I think from Google and Apple originally? Oh, yeah sometimes you can identify things, like a cop once speeded along this road and he could see his datapoint (a far outlier)!" Nobody saw any problem with this. And it's such a small step away from direct actions based on this data (although people would probably take action themselves the moment they understand there are direct downsides for them.)
