tedunangst··on Poison everywhere: No output from your MCP server is safe
People will never give up the dream that we can secure the LLM by saying please one more time than the attacker.
tedunangst··on A year of funded FreeBSD development
A fourteen year old bug is relevant how?
tedunangst··on A year of funded FreeBSD development
Some huge customer chunked their data into 5GB pieces so now there's a "if size == 5GB" in the cache code.
tedunangst··on Too Many Open Files
Don't leak things with limits.
tedunangst··on Can I stop drone delivery companies flying over my property?
Why would the drone be hovering over a property where it's not making a delivery?
tedunangst··on “Bugs are 100x more expensive to fix in production” study might not exist (2021)
Is the opportunity cost of one hour of developer time only $70? Is every hour spent testing guaranteed to fix one bug?

I feel like the logic here gets a little twisted because it's comparing the value of a known outcome with an earlier probability. You can save millions of dollars by buying a winning lottery ticket before they announce the number.

tedunangst··on Cloudflare CEO: Football piracy blocks will claim lives
The NFL streaming services are truly bizarre. You can't stream local games, based on billing address, because you're supposed to watch TV. Which means if you go on vacation, you still can't watch, because they're not on TV and not streamable with your account.
tedunangst··on Hacker News now runs on top of Common Lisp
You didn't notice they were ads.

You get more clicks for every tech company you name in the headline. Something like clicks = log(sum(market cap(companies))).

I don't think I've ever seen that before.

tedunangst··on AI can't even fix a simple bug – but sure, let's fire engineers
What's the best way to insulate myself from the output of people using AI poorly?
tedunangst··on The Xenon Death Flash: How a Camera Nearly Killed the Raspberry Pi 2
Conclusion seems rather forced. Like if trends continue, in ten years you will 1024 babies.
tedunangst··on Ratatoi is a C libary that wraps stdlib's strtol (as atoi does), but it's evil.
The idea is that if the input was not const, it's really inconvenient to get a const endptr back out. If your intention is to break your program, there are easier ways to do so than washing the pointer through strtol.
tedunangst··on Chatbots Trigger Guardrails Differently Based on Your Age, Gender, and Fandom
Now I really want to see the rest of the forbidden image.
tedunangst··on Magnus Carlsen forced into a draw by more than 143000 people playing against him
How many people voted in complete accordance?
tedunangst··on Moody’s strips U.S. of triple-A credit rating
Oh, I missed 2023. Was thinking of 2011 or whenever.
tedunangst··on Moody’s strips U.S. of triple-A credit rating
Last time around this led to reduced borrowing costs, so good news, I guess.
tedunangst··on Jetrelay: A high-performance ATproto relay in 500 LOC
Unclear what makes this an atproto relay and not a websocket relay.
tedunangst··on Show HN: Undetectag, track stolen items with AirTag
Locks keep the dyslexic realtor from showing my house to people interested in the neighboring property.
tedunangst··on Stack Overflow is almost dead
Good luck with that. The last thing I used SO for was getting answers for SwiftUI and I can assure you the official docs did not contain the needed information.
tedunangst··on Fast machines, slow machines (2023)
The only slow animation I noticed is the genie effect when minimizing, but you can switch to a zoom effect and it's fastish.
tedunangst··on Why do Saturation and Luminance go all the way to 240, but Hue goes only to 239
This is shrinkflation! Windows is stealing 17% of the possible RGB colors from us.
tedunangst··on RIP Usenix ATC
BSDCan is happening in one month, and along with sister conferences, has always kept a good mix of industry and academic work imo. There's a few PhD or masters student projects, but many of the talks are practical industrial work, things that have shipped.
tedunangst··on Why the Apple II Didn't Support Lowercase Letters (2020)
You don't need case sensitivity for that.
tedunangst··on 21 GB/s CSV Parsing Using SIMD on AMD 9950X
I mean, the most interesting part of the article for me:

> A bit surprisingly the AVX2 parser on 9950X hit ~20GB/s! That is, it was better than the AVX-512 based parser by ~10%, which is pretty significant for Sep.

They fixed it, that's the whole point, but I think there's evidence that AVX-512 doesn't actually benefit consumers that much. I would be willing to settle for a laptop that can only parse 20GB/s and not 21GB/s of CSV. I think vector assembly nerds care about support much more than users.

tedunangst··on Technical analysis of the Signal clone used by Trump officials
I don't think it follows that they selected the archiving messenger because they wanted disappearing messages. The whole disappearing messages thing was just internet speculation.
tedunangst··on US EPA plans to cut staff to 1980s levels, dissolve research office
Looking forward to rediscovering if acid rain is real or a myth.
