teddyuk··on Google users in UK to lose EU data protection – sources
The uk could veto anything from the eu so if they wanted to violate eu law they could have stopped it being created in the first place, there is no rational reason for brexit
teddyuk··on Why Susan Fowler blew the whistle on sexism at Uber
This hasn’t been my experience working in IT over the last twenty years.
teddyuk··on France fines Apple €25M for iOS software that slowed down older iPhones
If you bought a top of the range machine for windows 95 and put windows 98 on it, it would have been slow.
teddyuk··on This person does not exist
It would be really funny if someone managed to use someone’s phone camera to take a photo and make it look like the site was showing their own face.
teddyuk··on Coronavirus Forces World’s Largest Work-from-Home Experiment
What stops people watching cat videos while walking around and touching their key fob against specific points?
teddyuk··on A guide to freelancing in Finland
This isn’t the case in the uk, anyone can start a business
teddyuk··on Jupyter notebooks in the IDE: VS Code vs. PyCharm
I can’t help thinking that notebooks would be less relevant if people embraced unit testing more
teddyuk··on What’s wrong with computational notebooks?
I think adding a toggle to run or not run a cell would be a trivial change, something like adding a property to the cell (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jupyter/notebook/master/no...) and checking whether that is set or not before running the contents.
teddyuk··on Microsoft to force Chrome default search to Bing via Office365 ProPlus installer
If I install a new browser I don’t care what default search it has, I can change it.

Once I have changed it I don’t want something changing it without me requesting it.

This is my position, I’m unlikely to change.

teddyuk··on Actix project postmortem
The maintainer can choose whatever style they damn well please, if you don't like it don't use it.

What is hard about this?

teddyuk··on Gandi loses data, customers told to use their own backups
Maybe not even malicious, maybe they just put in the wrong subscription ID :(
teddyuk··on Linus: Don't Use ZFS
Surely the kernel developers can do whatever the hell they like.

If you don’t like that don’t use it.

teddyuk··on Azure has an edge over AWS at big companies, Goldman Sachs survey says
I’ve seen azure implemented at dozens of top enterprises and every single one used the api’s to some extent.

People make dev/test/pox’s by hand then automate it.

I’d take the wager :)

teddyuk··on Azure has an edge over AWS at big companies, Goldman Sachs survey says
This is spot on
teddyuk··on Azure has an edge over AWS at big companies, Goldman Sachs survey says
Azure sales are very good at offering big discounts and incentives for getting people to migrate, I have seen many enterprises suddenly switch to azure because of big discounts but have never seen any enterprise suddenly switch to aws or gcp.
teddyuk··on A Response to Hello World in Go
On an “etch a sketch” you go up one dial then down a half then right half a dial then down half a dial then right half a dial and then right half a dial and then left half a dial and up one dial and then right half a dial and then down half a dial and then...bugger stuck
teddyuk··on NHS gets £40M to cut login times on its IT systems
I personally think £40million is outrageous but how much does a system that cannot go down cost?
teddyuk··on The 2020s will be known as the Remote Work decade
Hope so
teddyuk··on The Fallacy of Premature Optimization (2009)
I started reading the article:

“ The inner-platform effect is the tendency of software architects to create a system so customizable...”

Yup, that was it and I have seen it so many times - architects should think that a flexible system that “can just” handle any possible future requirement. This always ends in a mess of junk that isn’t actually needed by the business.

teddyuk··on The Fallacy of Premature Optimization (2009)
I just finished a project where literally everything had been over engineered to the point that it took them weeks to do a release.

The code generally had one path but every method was built using dictionaries of possible classes that would implement interfaces so they wouldn’t have any duplicate code.

Sometimes some dev teams go down the wrong path.

teddyuk··on An IT migration corrupted 1.3B customer records
This, they should have migrated test accounts or some employee accounts first and then slowly migrated other accounts.
teddyuk··on Open letter concerning Facebook's proposals to apply end-to-end encryption
Priti Patel pleading for everyone to give them what they want “can’t you just think of the children”
teddyuk··on Bot Submissions to Comment Website Can’t Be Distinguished from Human Submissions
I would love it if I could tell a bot the outline of an article and the main facts and then it filled in the rest, that would be awesome.

It doesn’t have to be a human or bot but a human and bot together :)

teddyuk··on Show HN: I built a website for sharing salary info
I lie anonymously because I want to put the average up so we all get paid more :)
teddyuk··on Google Brass Set 2023 as Deadline to Beat Amazon, Microsoft in Cloud
I don’t know if you still can but it used to be that with Microsoft premier support if you passed some specific exams you could bypass the first tier (who were excellent engineers) and go straight to escalation/ cpr engineers
teddyuk··on JetBrains: $270M revenue, 405K paying users, $0 raised
The thing I like is that their stuff makes it easier to develop and is reasonably priced.

If your company won’t pay for it you can buy a personal subscription cheaply.

teddyuk··on We Only Hire the Trendiest (2016)
I’ve had this recently, worked at a place that Microsoft uses for case studies and have had a couple of jobs because of where it is - people see Microsoft holding hands on stage and then ask recruiters to get people who worked there
teddyuk··on $12k/month SaaS scraping social networks’ data
How easy is it for a us company to do anything about a Ukraine’ian company?
