techcode··on There's not enough power for America's high-tech ambitions
How is this different than many other "western democracies"?

For one specific example - The Netherlands with its various tax breaks/benefits - such as buying hybrid or fully electric car, installing solar panels, turning off natural gas (widely used for heating houses/apartments and domestic water) and switch to air based heat pumps and induction cooktop ...

All combined brought the country to a point where it's struggling with electrical grid capacity and availability.

While existing homes tend to have reliable supply of electricity. New homes and companies wait for electrical connection or they still go through with using natural gas despite hybrid heat pumps already being placed, during peak sun electrical grid operators turn off receiving electricity from private solar panels ...etc

There are also often gallbladder stones.

AFAIK they usually form ahead of ketogenic diet - when people are eating little fat and dont need much enzyme/bile - it's not flushed from gallbladder often enough.

And then increased fat consumption on ketogenic (or Paleo, Mediterranean, Carnivore ...etc) diet requires flushing gallbladder - and only then you realize you have gallbladder stones.

Anyway - true ketogenic diet is hard to pull off and maintain. Even just few glasses of milk (~2.5g of carbs per 100ml) could take you out of ketosis.

Same for basically any typical fruit (e.g. apple, pear, orange, banana...etc) where one fruit is enough carbs to take you out of ketosis.

So it's more realistic to sustain low carb with <=50g of carbs per day, and get most of benefits (including weight loss without increasing exercise) without too much risk of all the mentioned negatives.

Of course YMMV, and you should consult at least your GP (or other specialists) before changing your diet a lot.

In personal experience - such low carb diet works nice in combo with skipping breakfast (not quite intermittent fasting, but time between first and last meal is shorter than time from last meal until next days meal).

If anyone is like me and can't really skip breakfast, nor at least delay first meal until noon.

I've found drinking "bulletproof coffee" takes case of hunger and energy until actual lunch time.

Despite media hype it can be just water, coffee - instant or grounded Turkish/Greek/Balkan style, espresso isn't enough liquid for full mug - with butter and coconut aka MTC oil.

And of course if such coffee doesn't work for you as meal replacement. Then eggs, bacon/sausages, avocado (no bread, no beans, no orange/apple/etc juice) is a perfect (practically 0 carbs) meal that works for breakfast, brunch or dinner.

techcode··on How the ADHD Brain Processes Sugar Differently
Premise there is that while "normal" (average neuro typical) brain works just fine with either glucose or ketones - it's different for non-typical brains.

And through bypassing damaged or suboptimal glucose pathways, you also bypass problems that come with it.

Of course it might also be that ADHD brains simply do come from evolution of what used to be Hunters (as opposed to Gatherers). It wouldn't be too unreasonable to think Hunters ate more fat and protein than Gatherers.

techcode··on How the ADHD Brain Processes Sugar Differently
While I agree with you on the basic premise that those scans are likely reflection of how ADHD brain works in general and not strictly how ADHD brains processes glucose.

It's been shown that ketogenic diets - where whole body and brain switch to fat/ketones instead of glucose for power helps with Epilepsy (and was it also Parkinsons).

techcode··on How the ADHD Brain Processes Sugar Differently
Personal ADHD anecdote - being on low carb or keto was really helping with energy and focus.

We were not exactly counting all the nutrients in details. Since we normally eat a lot of protein and fat (think almost mediterranean diet), we basically focused on eating as little carbs as possible - no bread/pasta/potatoes/etc (even whole banana would be too much carbs in a day).

On the other hand - back as undiagnosed kid, I've used "white coffee" (milk, sugar and 10%~20% of normal coffee/caffeine) and even bits of chocolate throughout study/tests/exams.

techcode··on Apple introduces M4 chip
Have we done full circle?

When I started doing this "Internet stuff" we were called "webmasters", and job would actually include what today we call: - DevOps - Server/Linux sysadmin - DB admin - Full stack (backend and frontend) engineer

And I might have forgot some things.

techcode··on Apple introduces M4 chip
Why pointing out Calculus as opposed to just Math?

Might be just my Eastern Europe background where it was all just "Math" and both equations (that's Algebra I guess) and simpler functions/analysis (Calculus?) are taught in elementary school around age 14 or 15.

Maybe I'm missing/forgetting something - I think I used Calculus more during electrical engineering than for computer/software engineering.

techcode··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2024)
I'm with kioleanu on this.

Before covid and being in office - "core hours" meant you needed to physically be in office during those hours on almost all days - basically all work days except occasional doctor/dentist/signing-contract-to-buy-house/sick type of situations. And had flexibility to come in earlier or stay later.

In your case it seems to be the same definition of core hours.

Or this "trust to balance their work and life" means it would really be OK for someone to say something like "I'm regularly pick up kids from school/daycare during those last 2 core hours"?

techcode··on Home Assistant has a new foundation and a goal to become a consumer brand
Home Assistant is practically already there.

While installing it initially might be technical, these days they also sell things with it preinstalled.

After tuning on HA for the first time, it just recognized our heating system (Plugwise, it's also zigbee but custom/closed), Christmas Tree lights, Smart Reader of our Electricity & Gas (as in district "propane"), Foscam and Reolink cameras and doorbell ...etc.

All those things just asked for username/password set for that service/device and everything just worked.

And actually controlling of things like TV (well Chromecast part of it that's built into) just work without authentication.

And while Zigbee Coordinators required some flashing of firmware updates. From there on it was very similar to any other smart device system.

techcode··on Ask HN: How to manage phones and PCs for elderly parents?
Sounds like those parents would benefit from having a Chromebook?

If they want to play games then SteamDeck or such

Otherwise for phones, I just give my mum same/similar device to one I'm using (e.g. Motorola Moto G[number]). There's ~1800km in between us, so by using same or very similar device - I can hand hold her step by step.

And actually phone is usually not a problem - it's the TV. In order to have good Internet we've switched her from cable (coax so TV tuner was same as last few decades) to fiber. With fiber, now TV is basically IPTV/SmartTV - and she just wants to turn it on and use +/- and digits for channels and volume.

techcode··on Ask HN: How to manage phones and PCs for elderly parents?
The best example I had of the same (started with Amstrad CPC, then Amiga, PC ... software engineer for almost two decades).

I couldn't find "Find on page" on iOS/Safari, so I did a Google search on how to so it - result snippet on Google was cut and actual results page was full page of forum replies, and I was having trouble finding it by just scrolling.

Now years later (and only Android) I forgot, it was something rather non intuitive where they've hidden that option.

techcode··on Amsterdam public transport drops Musk's X over constant hateful messages
More of the first - I imagine some example(s) exist. Though without finding/seeing even one of them, it's hard to think there's more than few isolated incidents.

I'm not too clear on what you were asking regarding judgment part?

techcode··on ChatControl: EU ministers want to exempt themselves
This.

It's been same before EU or other similar multiple country things.

Back then some politicians were getting "promoted" into ambassadors of some faraway country, or decided to become university professors, if not flat out sent to "Goli Otok", "Siberia" ...etc.

Since that mentality/way-of-doing politics has been around for a while - it will not be easy to get the political establishment to change.

techcode··on Ask HN: Has anyone gotten the Iceland 'Long-term visa for remote work'?
Maybe OP is into volcanos?

Anyway - Croatia also has digital nomad visa. Mentioning just in case OP needs to be close enough to Iceland timezone, and wants better weather ...etc.

techcode··on Amsterdam public transport drops Musk's X over constant hateful messages
Can someone point towards examples of those flamed/death threats/etc?

Worst I found are tweets about drivers that don't pick up travelers from a stop being called "jerks".

techcode··on Steven Levitt and John Donohue defend the abortion-crime hypothesis
Wasn't there also other stuff that could impact this - say changes (loosening) to requirements for getting a divorce?
techcode··on Steven Levitt and John Donohue defend the abortion-crime hypothesis
Pretty much every criminal says they've learned more crime/techniques and could build their "network" in prison. So more prisoners would likely have effect of continuing/promoting crime.

Anyway - no birth control method (except abstaining) is 100%, even when you stack multiple different ways it can happen.

And some methods of birth control - like pill for woman and vasectomy for guys - can mess you up long term.

Women describe getting off the pill like completely changing their taste/smell senses, even brain/thinking ...etc (which sounds similar to what happens in/after pregnancy). When they give it to teenage girls (to "fix" their irregular cycle) they often gain weight..

And while vasectomy could be reversed, it's not guaranteed it would work.

techcode··on Amsterdam public transport drops Musk's X over constant hateful messages
From https://www.geenstijl.nl/5175653/GVB-stopt-met-Twitter

"Must be a decision by the non-tweeting CEO Claudia Zuiderwijk , her predecessor is now doing something in politics."

No idea of there's any truth in that. OTOH it wouldn't be first time some executive is stacking cards in favor of their pet project (GVBs Gappie app).

techcode··on Amsterdam public transport drops Musk's X over constant hateful messages
I've subconsciously ruled out DMs - so thanks for pointing out.

That's said, GVBs announcement was mentioning lack of supervision/moderation, and they continue to use WhatsApp - so I don't think it was Twitter/X DMs but actual replies.

And yeah you can simply set who can reply for each post on X - e.g. only mentioned users, so for their announcements basically no one.

And while there's obviously a segment of X users that are the kind you imagine also trolls on 4chan - reporting posts/replies with racism/hate/etc usually results in their temporary or even permanent ban.

techcode··on Amsterdam public transport drops Musk's X over constant hateful messages
They used the account only to announce disruptions - and didn't lock comments/replies.

So obviously on some of those posts you would see replies from people annoyed by specific disruptions.

The weird thing is that you actually need to spend time to find any replies - as most announcements didn't have replies.

And those I found only reached the "sarcastically formed hypothetical question". And still often being on point - e.g. why are there no fallback buses to cover tram/metro disruptions.

Considering all that - it seems "constant hateful messages" is at least a bit exaggerated.

techcode··on Roblox Studio boss: children making money on the platform isn't exploitation
With one kid just becoming a teen and other kid being half the age - I'm somewhat biased.

I know a dozens of early teens (friends/classmates of my kid, kids of friends/colleagues ...etc) that are (still) playing Roblox.

I even know one of those older teens (friends kid) that is earning enough money from Roblox games - that it doesn't make sense for him to do a typical Dutch teenager job of stocking shelves in stores/markets.

From ages 6/7 and higher it's common for kids to say to each other "Don't need toy type of birthday present as I would prefer Roblox (or once they are a bit older Fortnite or other similar) gift card".

More than once our kid got so many that we had to "throttle" their "use" over weeks/months.

Anyway - yeah developers getting only 30% and Roblox keeping 70%, especially with all the fuss about the likes of Apple/Google/Unity getting into trouble for 70/30 split the other way - doesn't make sense.

Sure - there are bigger operational costs for Roblox actually running game servers (instead of just the store) - though not that much bigger, right?

techcode··on Google Is Killing Retro Dodo and Other Independent Sites
Similar experience when I tried using DuckDuckGo as default on recently bought Android phone.

I'm all in for privacy - and actively dislike many of Google/YouTube moves (which seem intentional part of plan and not so much accidental or with technical reasons) - e.g.:

YouTube doesn't allow parents to limit their young kids to only whitelisted channels ...

Even worse, if you block YouTube.com domain - kid can't sign into school account (Google classroom stuff) because signing into anything Google actually goes through something like accounts.youtube.com.

And yet after 20th or 30th time when I was not finding things though DDG and manually typing "google.com" to do a search there (browser and other android search boxes were defaulting to DDG).

I just switched default browser and search engine back to Google :(

techcode··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
This. And it actually doesn't even need to be done through SMTP.

MMS being basically SMS with a link/url to where the phone fetches multimedia part from - it could also be sent via older EMI-UCP (that was originally used for pagers).

At some point pre 2010 (when I worked in Routo Messaging - now called Telesign) we also got an SS7 connection - so we could finally start doing stuff like a real mobile operator/provider.

techcode··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
Until 2010 I worked for Route Messaging (now they are called Telesign) on internal systems as well as integrations with mobile operators and other "messaging brokers" around the world.

MMS was indeed order of magnitude more expensive than SMS and several orders of magnitude less used.

Reasoning for such high prices was more about mobile internet/data back then being really expensive "1G" - and MMS was (still is I guess) using mobile data to send/receive "multimedia messages".

At this point I expect that cost of MMS is more about maintaining legacy systems/servers for that.

Although in something like 2008/2009 integrating through legacy SMS protocols (those previously used by beepers/pagers) was cheaper than through modern protocols. Some operators had hardware boxes supporting those that were already paid off long time ago.

techcode··on Users say Glassdoor added real names to user profiles without their consent
Being surrounded by "yes" people can only get you so far.

Although it probably gets you further than the opposite extreme where everyone disagrees all the time.

Personally having such info (critical reviews on previous employers) for a candidate, would be close to already having their answer for "Tell me about a time you had a challenge/problem/conflict at work" type of interview questions.

techcode··on Instinctive Sleeping and Resting Postures (2000)
All the babies/toddlers I've seen (my own kids included) naturally do that "asian/slav squat" - for example to pick up toys from the ground, or when they want to rest a bit without completely sitting, right?

So at which point/age do some of us stop doing that type of squat before "use it or lose it" kicks in?

techcode··on NIH Researchers Identify Brain Connections Associated with ADHD in Youth
Isn't that called proactive procrastination?

Where you intentionally have more than 1 thing/project going on, so you can procrastinate on nr1 while you work on nr2 ...etc.

And for going in deep and long - it really needs to be something personally interesting.

Or someone else has a better was to get into hyperfocus flow/zone?

techcode··on Are Billionaires prepping for the apocalypse – or pioneering a new feudalism?
Elementary school history was really long time ago. Though having been born in the Balkans - there's a lot of emphasis on history (in hopes to learn and not repeat same mistakes).

IIRC WWI was continuation of things that were left unresolved from Balkan wars (big powers only jumped in at the end of Balkan wars to get their say/way into peace agreements).

And Balkan wars were continuation of the fall of Ottoman empire where many Balkan countries tried to continue with how things were ~500 years earlier (before Ottomans captured Balkans).

techcode··on NIH Researchers Identify Brain Connections Associated with ADHD in Youth
There's a lot of high-paying tech jobs that can be playing into ADHD (and other not neuro typical brains) strengths and focus thats more like running 42 1km "sprints" than mostly consistent pace 42km marathon.

Things that come to mind are data science/analysis, debugging and fixing outages (finalizing follow up RFO might be hardest part ), security/hacking (hopefully white hat)...

And basically whatever else one personally finds interesting to dig into deep and/or wide.

techcode··on Airbnb is banning indoor security cameras
AFAIK everyone in e-commerce tries to have consistent pricing throughout the whole flow - otherwise people notice difference between pages and drop off.

Stuff that you explained can happen because initially IP-to-Country isn't 100% precise (later in booking/checkout stage you provide country and then it knows for sure).

Other case I've seen is that meta (comparison) website you came from showed you prices without including everything even though they should've.

And then booking platform tries to transition you into correct pricing in between their pages.
