techbubble··on BOT Domain Names Now Available
The registration process validates that you have a working bot and costs $750/year.
techbubble··on Find every domain someone owns automatically
Is it possible to include WHOIS data from way back when InterNIC was the only registrar?

I own a domain I registered way back when you would send an email to InterNIC and registration was free. The WHOIS data returned for the domain only starts in 2008 and skips about 12-14 years.

techbubble··on Tesla’s promises don’t compute with current physics and economics of batteries
I was thinking of batteries connected in series with a mechanism to separate the connection during charging. The main connector would be the same. Perhaps this is just not possible with huge batteries?

Edit: Oh I get it...the charging port is what you meant.

techbubble··on Tesla’s promises don’t compute with current physics and economics of batteries
What would prevent the battery from having a segmented design so that multiple segments can be charged in parallel? Is there something about the chemistry that requires the entire vehicle battery to be a single unit?
techbubble··on Coding Machines
Thanks for the tip. I found a post [0] describing genetic algorithms for circuit design that helped clarify the process. Coincidentally, the circuit described has a component that does nothing.

techbubble··on Coding Machines
That was an amazingly good read.

Possible Spoiler.

What is the process for programmatically generating code that achieved a certain result without caring about efficiency?

techbubble··on Redesigning the airport boarding pass (2010)
If you have checked luggage, they print boarding passes for you and stick the baggage tag labels on the pass. At that point you have a paper pass so using the mobile one doesn't make much sense.

Also, if you are traveling internationally, the boarding pass is mandatory for the various security and immigration stamps.

techbubble··on Redesigning the airport boarding pass (2010)
I wish someone would add the departure time (origin TZ), flight duration, arrival time (origin TZ) and arrival time (destination TZ).
techbubble··on Accidentally Stopping a Global Cyber Attack
Wonder how much longer it would have taken to understand the impact if he had just modified the hosts file instead of registering the domain?
techbubble··on Ask HN: How has volunteering helped you grow?
My main volunteer effort is Walkstarter ( https://www.walkstarter.org ) a free platform to help public schools raise money more efficiently through walkathon fundraisers. I built, support, fund and maintain the platform and my goal is to have it in use by every U.S. public school.

The platform is on track to hit $1 million in funds raised in the next 30-45 days. It's very gratifying to work on code and features that result in a tangible benefit -- increased funding for education. It has taught me a great deal about the vast disparities in education funding between affluent school districts in the Bay Area versus struggling school districts in other parts of the country. It is sad that we spend so much more on weapons than education.

Soon, I will launch GoalStarter, a variant of Walkstarter for schools that have all kinds of other -athons for fundraising such as Spellathon, Musicathon etc. I am also working on integrating RFID tags so when kids walk laps, the arduous task of recording laps walked per kid can be automated.

techbubble··on Ask HN: Building a side project that makes money. Where to start?
Side projects that also do some public good might be a good avenue for you to consider. I built Walkstarter https://walkstarter.org a free walkathon fundraising platform for public schools as a side project. The experience is fantastic. I continue to develop my skills, e-meet new people, and the platform is on track to raise a very satisfying $1 million for schools.
techbubble··on I'm at Fog Creek, and we're introducing Gomix
This looks like a slightly upgraded Mozilla Thimble https://thimble.mozilla.org
techbubble··on Ask HN: What was your greatest accomplishment in 2016?
Launched the public beta for WhenHub https://www.whenhub.com and mobile app. It's a SAAS app that lets you tell stories with time. You create a rich-media schedule of events and then embed it as a visualization on web or FB where it can be viewed, then optionally time-shifted and added to calendar. The mobile app uses geostreaming to answer the question "when will each person arrive" for any scenario where multiple people are meeting up.

It has been an interesting journey grappling with creating a responsive, embeddable, interactive JS player on front-end while dealing with the idiosyncracies of iCal and Google calendar synch on the backend.

I learned how to work well with a distributed remote team and get a product released.

techbubble··on Why we chose Vue.js
I think it depends on how broadly the template is defined. If you can reasonably limit it to the portion of the UI that is impacted by the data then it isn't so bad to have logic in the template. If the model is built on the server-side, this approach ensures you don't have markup polluting your server-side code and making it less manageable in the long term.
techbubble··on Why we chose Vue.js
Vue.js seems like a great fit between the DOM manipulation of jQuery and the opinionated approach of AngularJS. Thanks for sharing. Going to experiment with Vue.js right away.
techbubble··on Mozilla Thimble
Thank you. Links are fixed.
techbubble··on Mozilla Thimble
I have been using Thimble to teach kids web development for several years via CoderDojo Silicon Valley. Kids just love it...it's simple and doesn't get in the way. I have tried Cloud9, CodePen and other cloud-based IDE's, but always keep coming back to Thimble.

Here's a sample parent+child class on building a holiday greeting card: https://thimbleprojects.org/nik/20062

Here's a canvas drawing sample: https://thimbleprojects.org/nik/102205

The published Thimble project URL used to be hackable to remove the Remix button so kids could have free Github-like hosting, but alas it was removed.

techbubble··on E Ink announces a full color electrophoretic ePaper display
I was fed-up with the poor quality of display frames available commercially, so I built my own. Asus display (stripped), custom distressed-look vintage frame from Etsy, AppleTV, custom matte and mount and this is the result https://www.dropbox.com/s/n0kmwfd00kot6mu/File%20May%2024%2C... I am quite happy with the result and plan on making a larger one for high-res art display.
techbubble··on Electric cars are no longer held back by crappy, expensive batteries
One more for the list -- I got a Mercedes B250e three months ago and have been quite happy with it. It has a Tesla drive train [0] and although the official range is 83 miles per charge, I consistently get around 105. Bonus -- the CarPlay integration is really well-done.

techbubble··on Glyphs are the hidden heroes of the typography world
I was puzzled by the use of hashtag as well. Seems like there is a need for a glyph or glyph combination to indicate hashtag. #<> comes to mind.
techbubble··on Ask HN: The “I want to do everything but end up doing nothing” dilemma
I have tried many different techniques and found a simple way that works well for me -- I wake up at 4 a.m. and get 3.5 hours of focused work done. In speaking to friends, especially those doing creative work, I have observed this to be a common thread. There is something about the quiet and stillness of the early morning that helps with focus and productivity in a different way than late night (source: I am a former night owl).
techbubble··on Show HN: Black Friday deals for developers
Does Jump Desktop support RDP file transfer using copy/paste? I looked at the product description but didn't see this noted.
techbubble··on Gobble Promises to Help Customers Make Delicious Meals in 10 Minutes or Less
My wife's fledgling startup does something like this -- she makes meal kits with all dry ingredients and instructions that are designed to encourage experimentation with recipes. Her initial set is Indian cuisine, but she is working on other cuisines as well http://recipesack.com

(I know I risk being down-voted, but this seems relevant.)

techbubble··on Ask HN: Is there a self-hosted image gallery that doesn't completely blow?
Not sure if this fits the bill -- http://theopenphotoproject.org
techbubble··on I think the LinkedIn Intro team deserves a thumbs up, do you?
I don’t think the team has done anything noteworthy by coming up with a hack that increases risks for the end-user (privacy and security come to mind). Additionally, the technique is not new — redirecting email for scanning and possibly injecting additional content is how spam services work. Conceptually, even Chrome plugins do the same thing in your browser.
techbubble··on Ask HN: Please review my photos to coloring pages startup
I regularly print coloring pages for my kids and the process is usually the same: 1) they name a character, 2) I search Google images, 3) we scroll through and pick 2-3 to print.

I asked them if they would want to use existing photos for coloring and they didn't express any interest. I think I know why -- people and places (i.e. most of the photos we have) are not as interesting to color as dragons, fairies, favorite show characters etc.

techbubble··on What the Steve Jobs movie got right, and wrong
Woz chimed in on Gizmodo's review of the movie: http://gizmodo.com/i-saw-the-movie-tonight-i-thought-the-act...
techbubble··on Poll: do you live in the country you were born in?
No. India -> US (MI : OH : DC : CA)
techbubble··on What the Steve Jobs movie got right, and wrong
Just got back from watching the movie. Kutcher does a really good job channeling Jobs. A couple of scenes were over-dramatized, but overall it was a very watchable movie. It got off to a slow start, but after that it was well-paced and kept my interest. I enjoyed it and will probably see it again.
techbubble··on CSS Tube Map
I created a jQuery plugin to render subway maps using canvas a few years ago when I was getting into HTML5. Here's a demo http://kalyani.com/subwaymap and a detailed guide http://kalyani.com/2010/10/subway-map-visualization-jquery-p...
