tdewitt··on Terminating Service for 8Chan
You can have more than one problem. Think of it like a post mortem. Don't just look for root cause hut also think about mitigating factors. Solve for as many as possible.

Even if you don't accept easy access to firearms as the root cause, it's definitely a factor. You don't kill 21 people with rocks and sticks.

tdewitt··on Terminating Service for 8Chan
I have guns in my home. My wife hates guns and she has a home defense weapon. That's my intro because I don't want to be mistaken for anti-gun. I like guns and I like shooting.

How would you accomplish this without a firearm? Do you think you could accomplish this with a bat or a knife? The attack happened at a Walmart. They sell hard objects. This couldn't have gotten far. I can't imagine a location or situation where you could be so effective in harming so many without a weapon that gives you so much distance from your victim.

Do you have kids? I have one. Every day I look at my toddler and have to think about how to keep her safe (statistics are in my favor but they were in every parents' favor). Then I have to look at my wife and assure her that our baby will be able to live a long life.

I'll relinquish my second amendment rights, if I never again ahave to live through a year where there are more mass shootings than days. For now, we're just moving out of Texas.

tdewitt··on Ask HN: What do you do on an Android phone that cannot be done on an iPhone?
I can build it how I like it. For my daughter's play phone, I can remove all the things she doesn't need at this point: Bluetooth, GPS, dialer, federal alerts, etc. I sideload apps and tighly control what she can access (she's a toddler). For my phone, I can make similar changes and extract as much Google as possible. You cannot do this with Apple.
tdewitt··on Ask HN: What to do after $8M (all cash, post tax) exit?
This.

Sounds like you have enough to live off of, with a little planning. Enjoy the time you get to spend with your family. Find a few things that interest you, taking some random classes, try new stuff. Were I in your shoes, I'd buy a home with enough dirt to build a shop and I'd tinker.

tdewitt··on Raspberry Pi WLAN setup
I have half a dozen Pis to reimage right now, so this is timely. Can't wait to give it a shot today.
tdewitt··on Bye bye BetterSlack
You solved on of my biggest gripes (muting spam) and a few others I didn't even know I had. Thanks for doing this. I grabbed a fork for myself. Definitely a big middle finger from Slack to the developer community and when I'm the one making the decisions, I'll be recommending people skip Slack. They mostly lost me when they killed the IRC gateway but they added another nail to the coffin with this.
tdewitt··on Zuckerberg struggles to name a single Facebook competitor
You've made my (and his) point and that's what's misleading about the article. He attempted to make that point but was interrupted and pushed for one and only one. Companies of this scale don't have one and only "biggest competitor" because they don't do only the one thing.
tdewitt··on Zuckerberg struggles to name a single Facebook competitor
I've been listening. His attempted answer was reasonable. Facebook doesn't have a single competitor because they don't have just a single product. Name the "biggest" competitors for Siemens or SAP or Google or Microsoft or Honeywell. They're companies of companies and each unit may have a single biggest competitor but asking for just one feels intentionally misleading.

Disclaimer: I hate Facebook and twitter and Pinterest and Snapchat and whatever the hell else and have no personal investment in this whatsoever. I'm listing purely for the entertainment value of watching zuck squirm.

tdewitt··on You will be surprised to see how much Google tracks about you
That's what I've done. Someone recently mocked me for using DDG instead of google and I explained that I did it to keep my data store shown by this link empty. I check regularly to make sure nothings new is turned on. Happy to always find it empty.
tdewitt··on Tell HN: Slack decides to close down IRC and XMPP gateways
That sucks. The IRC gateway was the only way I could ignore the rampant not spam and image dumps. I'll miss you, /ignore. RIP
tdewitt··on Ask HN: What's the worst-designed, slowest app that still makes a lot of money?
And just when you think you've got it sorted out, they do a major redesign and screw up your workflow (not the ticket flow, your personal one).

+1000 to JIRA as a response to this. I'd probably support confluence here too but every company y I've worked with killed it one the WYSWYG editor became mandatory and all of engineering refused to use it.

tdewitt··on Google Calendar should prevent spam by default
Mine's that length and of similar context. They should used my address to train filters. Over the years, the spam detection has gotten much better. I probably get a dozen a day that make it into my inbox now. It used to be tens or more. I think the smart labels really helped.

On the plus side, I have an account on everything.

tdewitt··on Amazon will launch its own delivery service to compete with FedEx, UPS
I love you right now. I had no idea that was a thing. I've repeatedly asked that USPS not be used because I like my packages to make it on time and to the right place. USPS has only been more reliable than the Amazon service which misses about 50% of the time and tramples all over my lawn about 30% of the time. I offered video proof but they apparently don't need it. I wish I could go FedEx or UPS only.
