tbrock··on PostgreSQL upgrades are hard
The upgrade path using logical replication is critical for minimizing downtime. The others should not be considered for production workloads.

As far as RDS goes it amazes me that, even with replicas, there are NO options for doing a zero downtime upgrade which is a major gotcha.

By this point they should buffer the writes during the critical section when the switchover happens and make this seamless for users and operators.

tbrock··on Ask HN: Who decided copy+paste should copy styling/formatting?
I think you just need to add shift, option is not necessary.
tbrock··on I Miss Heroku's DevEx
I think the modern version of this is render (render.com)

I’ve found their devex to be delighful and able to provide power without much of the conplexity.

tbrock··on Why M1 Macs don’t have full support for USB-C
The article says SMART is supported over thunderbolt but not over USB.
tbrock··on A brief reflection on Mac software stagnation
There’s tons of great stuff coming out:

Mimestream is the mail best app I’ve used in decades (gmail only). Id pay the creators $100 or more for a license if he charged.

TablePlus is decent.

Obsidian for notes.

Monodraw for ascii drawings.

tbrock··on OrioleDB – solving some PostgreSQL wicked problems
How can I contact you to get involved?! This is amazing.
tbrock··on OrioleDB – solving some PostgreSQL wicked problems
Finally someone tackling the real problems that everyone glosses over when gushing about postgres. Bravo! This is a really excellent project.
tbrock··on Launch HN: Hydra (YC W22) – Query any database via Postgres
In that case how does it work? Are the connectors wrappers around the other db drivers that expose a common Postgres wire protocol?
tbrock··on Ask HN: Tools to visualize data in SQL databases?
Metabase, looker, redash, periscope
tbrock··on Ask HN: Any piece of hardware that was more of game changer than you expected?
The 3dFX Voodoo2 - amazing leap in 3D gaming

The oculus quest 2 - VR for the masses, so much fun, actually works well for the first time without $$$

The Intel Core CPU - multi core computing for the masses, huge performance and efficiency gains over prior gen merging pentium M tech

Most recently Apple Silicon, specifically the Apple M1 MacBook Air:

- it runs dead silent

- it runs cool on my lap

- it has a tiny charger

- but mostly the performance blows away all non plugged in laptops besides other m1s and most desktops consuming many more watts at much higher temps and noise level

Its amazing how much a difference having full performance while on battery makes compared to x86 counterparts. I was a linux on thinkpad guy for years but this made me flip back fullstop.

tbrock··on Poll: Where do you live?
Wow I just moved to CLT and would love to meet more people that are engineers in the area, where are you all?
tbrock··on U.S. companies are hiring Latin America’s tech talent
Id love to hire some Latin American developers for my team. Any pointers on how to find them? Do folks go through outsourcing firms or try to directly hire folks?
tbrock··on A routine gem update ended up creating $73k worth of subscriptions
nit: Mongoid is not the MongoDB ruby driver. Mongoid is an Object::Document mapper for Ruby (which makes use of that driver). Nevertheless this should have warranted a mongoid major version bump because it's backward breaking.
tbrock··on Microsoft forked MIT licensed repo and changed the copyright [fixed]
Why would anyone write that so it changes the license to the right one instead of just flagging it as incorrect for review?
tbrock··on Tinyssh
Wow, no dynamic memory allocation stood out to me in the description. Pretty interesting!

This being auditable and significantly decreasing the attack vector surface area for ssh seems promising.

tbrock··on Postgres, Kafka, and a mysterious 100 GB
We ran into this too, i actually think its a terrible postgres default. Logical replication slots should have timeouts where if you haven't read the WAL record in say 24 hours it should be dropped. Make it configurable and set a sane default, problem solved.

You'd have to resync the followers/secondaries, big deal, its way better than the primary going down because its disk filled up. This failure mode is awful. On RDS its relatively painless because you can snap fingers and have more disk but if you are running it yourself? Good luck.

In practice, mongodb’s oplog mechanism, for example, which acts as a circular buffer with a set size is a much more tolerant implementation. If the oplog rolls over befrore you've read it just resync but at most its taken up 10% of your disk.

tbrock··on Ideal Monitor Rotation for Programmers
What model?
tbrock··on Ideal Monitor Rotation for Programmers
Literally none of them have a horizontal resolution exceeding that of a non-wide 4k monitor.
tbrock··on Ideal Monitor Rotation for Programmers
Thats bad. That max horizontal resolution is no better than a 4k monitor’s.
tbrock··on Ideal Monitor Rotation for Programmers
No. Their max horizontal resolution (technical specification) is no better than a 4k monitor’s.
tbrock··on Ideal Monitor Rotation for Programmers
What is extremely annoying to me is that all these companies make ultra wide monitors without increasing the horizontal resolution. Why would anyone want an ultra-WIDE monitor with exactly the same resolution as a 4k monitor. The T E X T L O O K S S T R E T C H E D!

They need to increase the horizontal resolution when they increase the width of the monitor to add value over a regular shape monitor with the same resolution.

Are there any 32"+ ultrawide screens that have higher horizontal resolution?

tbrock··on GraphQL and PostgreSQL as a managed back end?
Supabase: https://supabase.com/
tbrock··on The history of Berkeley DB
I would have given almost anything to be there and work on this with them or sleepycat’s successor wired tiger.

So much fun to implement this stuff and see it provide so much value.

tbrock··on Show HN: Caffeine – Minimum viable back end for prototyping
Thats code folks would have to write instead of focusing on the MVP, it would be better if this loaded it by convention.
tbrock··on Cloudflare blocks an almost 2 Tbps multi-vector DDoS attack
Certainly even 50/500, or 100/500 would be a better split.
tbrock··on Ask HN: What are some of the best well-written books on computer science?
“The go programming language” ive heard some consider as the modern equivalent and not just because the language is Go.
tbrock··on Lesser-known Postgres features
Im surprised there is no mention of foreign data wrappers, easily one of the best but lesser known features.

Would i use them in production? no. Are they fun to play around with? Yes!

tbrock··on ES modules are terrible
We recently went through this hell converting a NodeJS codebase to TypeScript. One reason many people willingly enter this hellscape is because we need ES modules for typescript.

I say “need” because Typescript wont ingest types from “required” files, you have to import them as modules.

So before we converted a single file to TS we has to audit all commonjs imports and exports to convert them to ES modules.

I agree wholeheartedly that the end result was a fools errand. I would have rather spent the time adding support for importing types via a require which for some reason returns any “any” today.

tbrock··on Apple Captures 75% of Global Handset Market Operating Profit in Q2 2021
The Y is a much more expensive car with a discontinued standard range version and the base model 3 is by far and away the best selling version of the vehicle.

Averages can be misleading. Id like to see the median prices given that the base tesla model 3 is VERY premium vs the base model accord which is not.

tbrock··on Apple Captures 75% of Global Handset Market Operating Profit in Q2 2021
If they did they would be dead in a year. They sell a fraction of the >$1000 phones apple sells by the shipload. Their bread and butter is the cheap stuff.

The same way nobody wants to spent $35k on a honda when they could have a tesla.
