> Hiring of juniors is basically dead these days and it has been like this for about 10 years and I hate it

We still have a large funnel of interns that end up becoming junior devs, and then progressing normally. I don't know the exact ratio of interns that end up actually getting hired as full-time employees, it's definitely low, but I think this is more of a function of most of them not actually being any good.

I flagged this because the site runs some Javascript for me that attempts a redirect to a spam page (which uBlock caught). Looks like there might be some malicious code injected there.

People with workflows like `git add .; git commit -m 'fix'` can push wondrous things to public repos.
tazjin··on The Mira Pro Color is Boox's first color E Ink monitor
I have a Dasung monitor (black & white, not colour) and its reasonably good for coding. You need to use light themes on eink devices (I use the default Emacs theme), as using a dark theme does lead to unusable bad ghosting.

Mine is a few years old and newer panels are better, so I would expect this to be pretty good.

tazjin··on Why Does Claude Speak Byzantine Music Notation?
It usually depends on location, for example Cloudflare has a setting somewhere for "always show captchas for non-western traffic" and a lot of people set it.

The website says "production ready" for their coreutils.

Maybe catching up to 40+ years of development takes a little bit of time?

tazjin··on We replaced our React front end with Go and WebAssembly
Well, for one, you need the whole Go runtime.
tazjin··on Macrodata Refinement
It's fine, it's wrapped up enough. Watching it is totally worth it, and it won't leave you hanging. The authors were saying that a third season would've pursued a different storyline anyways.

Counterpart!

(That, by the way, is where Severance seemingly got the inspiration for "The Board")

tazjin··on Sixos: A nix OS without systemd [video]
amjoseph focused a lot on the s6-init stuff, but I really think that infusions and the way they lead to more composable system configuration is the key thing here.

NixOS' module system works, but I don't think there's anybody who thinks it's particularly pretty or generalisable. As soon as you want to run one service twice with slightly varying config you're SOL ...

An important skill in life in general is to understand that your personal needs and requirements are not the same as everyone else's.
tazjin··on Perforator – Open-source tool for cluster-wide continuous profiling
Repo: https://github.com/yandex/perforator

We use this for GWP-style[0] continous-profiling over O(10k) nodes.

It does sampling through an eBPF program in the kernel, and supports generating a bunch of different output formats (classical flamegraphs, but also things like PGO profiles). One example where we use it daily is flamegraph diffs for prestable releases of services.

It's also worth mentioning that while the Github repo has an example for a Kubernetes setup, this isn't a Kubernetes-specific tool. We don't actually run Kubernetes ourselves. It works wherever (well, if you have Linux, that is!)

(bias note: I work at Yandex, but not in the Perforator team)

tazjin··on DeepSeek-R1: Incentivizing Reasoning Capability in LLMs via RL
This is just the same thing as asking ChatGPT to translate original Putin speeches to English, for example. When it refuses stuff like that it really does seem like some intercept triggered and it was just "told" to apologize and refuse.

Though with current political changes in the US this might change, we'll see.

tazjin··on Rewriting my website in plain HTML and CSS
I'm probably getting old, and I'm not a frontend dev, but your post makes no sense to me.

I looked at your site, and if that's anything more than a single static HTML file with some resources, served by a web server, something strange is going on. There is nothing complex on your site that requires more than a handful of lines of inline JS (to shuffle the letters).

The site also scrolls slowly, especially noticeable on phones. If this was just plain HTML it wouldn't.

It feels like the baseline for web developers has become that you MUST first add a ton of extremely complex dynamic stuff, and only then can you even think about putting a single line of text on the page. There's 200kB of code being loaded for this website, what is it doing?

Why? You can still get information from there, they're stopping you from working for free for them for some time.

Wasn't Zig moving off LLVM?

tazjin··on Ask HN: Programmers who don't use autocomplete/LSP, how do you do it?
> The classic example of getting this wrong is probably C# developers using IEnumerable when they should’ve used IQueryable.

Or literally any function from the standard library in C++, which will likely have undefined behaviour if you look at it wrong and didn't read the docs.

tazjin··on Unless my phone can be a PC, I don't want to keep paying for extra performance
They actually are starting to come back, e.g. the Xiamo QIN 3 Ultra. The QIN phones also have unlocked bootloaders and you can flash Lineage with Google Play if you need it.

Yes.

Composite - no. But an adapter costs less than a good beer in most countries on AliExpress (well, shipping excluded).
tazjin··on Dear sir, you have built a compiler (2022)
It's people trying to generalise some rule over the wrong thing. The right thing is that, in both directions, how the project goes is simply a skill question.

You have unskilled, sloppy developers? The homebrew project AND the third-party integration will turn out a mess.

tazjin··on The carefulness knob
> I mean, in some sense, isn’t every incident in some sense a misjudgment of risk? How many times do we really say, “Hoo boy, this thing I’m doing is really risky, we’re probably going to have an incident!” Not many.

Yeah, sure, that never happens. That's why "I told you so" is not at all a common phrase amongst folks working on reliability-related topics ;)

tazjin··on We shrunk our Javascript monorepo git size
There's (almost) no FTTH in Germany. The US used to be as bad as Germany, but it has improved significantly and is actually pretty decent these days (though connection speed is unevenly distributed).

Both countries are behind e.g. Sweden or Russia, but Germany by a much larger margin.

There's some trickery done in official statistics (e.g. by factoring in private connections that are unavailable to consumers) to make this seem better than it is, but ask anyone who lives there and you'll be surprised.

tazjin··on We shrunk our Javascript monorepo git size
I just tried this on nixpkgs (~5GB when cloned straight from Github).

The first option mentioned in the post (--window 250) reduced the size to 1.7GB. The new --path-walk option from the Microsoft git fork was less effective, resulting in 1.9GB total size.

Both of these are less than half of the initial size. Would be great if there was a way to get Github to run these, and even greater if people started hosting stuff in a way that gives them control over this ...
