tayl0r··on Fresco - A Beautiful Responsive Lightbox

"In fact, Fresco in the first truly responsive lightbox.
Give the demonstrations a try to see what that means,
make sure to adjust your screen size (or rotate your
  device)."
On OSX Chrome I resized my browser and all it seemed to do was scale the content. It didn't change any layouts or do any "magic"... How is this so special?
tayl0r··on Pot for Parents
I would say it's completely different than a psychologist or chiropractor because those 2 types of "doctors" get paid every time you come in for treatment. So they have a financial interest in prescribing treatment.

AFAIK Medical marijuana doctors don't have any financial interest in prescribing treatment. They get paid when you come in (which is only the one time), and if they think you can benefit from medical marijuana, they give you the card. They aren't getting paid every time you get high.

The stupid thing about that sentence in the article is that BIG SURPRISE, the CannaMed doctor recommended medical marijuana. No shit! That is why people go to them!

tayl0r··on Pot for Parents
I would say it is different in this case because you only go to those CannaMed doctors for 1 reason- to get your medical marijuana card. Paying for the visit is basically just part of the cost of getting the card. There are no upsells, the doctor isn't profitting off you buying the "medicine", etc. He gets paid for your visit and that's it.

So yeah, completely different than a chiropractor or psychiatrist who profits from your ongoing treatment.

tayl0r··on Pot for Parents
He's not getting high, he's "undergoing treatment".
tayl0r··on Bastion’s Open Source Branch for MonoGame
What is the deal with mobile 3d support in MonoGame? Does that only exists in dev branches?
tayl0r··on Onlive CEO fires staff, then donates $50,000 to health insurance fund
That is one of the problems in the US right now. Unless you or your spouse works at a business that gives good health care benefits, buying it yourself is prohibitively expensive.

The Affordable Healthcare Act (Obamacare) is trying to remedy this by creating the insurance exchanges and making everyone buy insurance. That should all be setup sometime in 2013 I think.

Until then, I'm staying in Germany where health care is actually affordable for self-employed people.

tayl0r··on The Tim Cook memo: line by line
It's cool to hate Apple because elite hackers don't like closed systems, despite the fact that their walled garden is actually better for 99.9% of consumers out there.
tayl0r··on The Tim Cook memo: line by line
Those prior things you speak of were absolutely terrible. I had all those devices and they sucked compared to the iPhone.

I think that those "innovations" seem simple now in hindsight, but why didn't any of the companies previously making smart phones or PDAs (Palm, Windows CE, HP, Compaq, Dell, etc) come up with something that not only the hardcore nerds would actually want to use?

I really don't think it was just marketing. Apple made a smartphone that almost everyone could pick up and enjoy using.

I definitely see both sides to this story. It sucks that Apple is killing fair (and unfair) competition but it also sucks that Samsung can just sit there and blatantly copy Apple's innovations. There needs to be a balance.

This is the best quote I've seen about the verdict:

"Samsung only found itself in trouble with the products that copied liberally from Apple. It did not help their case that they had a hundred page document describing what to copy nor the fact that Google went to them and said "do not copy Apple that blatantly"."

tayl0r··on Stop Using The Cup of Coffee vs. $0.99 Cent App Analogy
Yeah, it is very obvious in hindsight.
tayl0r··on Stop Using The Cup of Coffee vs. $0.99 Cent App Analogy
Nice argument. I hadn't thought of it like that before but I think it makes a lot of sense.
tayl0r··on Amazing CSS3 3D popup book
Why would you be running Chrome version 20? Just restart your browser.
tayl0r··on Fly to 6 Continents in Style
I just booked it from Flightfox. Only 1080 USD and the flight is shorter with less stopovers than the one I found for 1200 EUR. I'm pretty impressed and will definitely be using Flightfox again.

I really like how you can talk back and forth with the experts via the comment system.

tayl0r··on Fly to 6 Continents in Style
Awesome, just submitted the contest.
tayl0r··on Fly to 6 Continents in Style
I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to take an around the world trip in just 2 weeks. You'd end up spending the majority of your time on planes and barely being able to enjoy each stop.

Doesn't sound like very much fun to me.

For people who would actually book an around the world trip, 4 months is probably a much more realistic duration.

tayl0r··on Fly to 6 Continents in Style
I really want to submit my upcoming trip to FlightFox but I'm not sure of the best time to do it and there also isn't a date range that is wide enough for what I want.

I want to travel anytime in late October or November (5 week window vs the 6 day window the site allows). I have 2 adults and 1 lap infant. I am going one-way from Berlin, Germany to Orlando, Florida.

When would be the best time to submit this trip? Is it even worth it given the best price I can find online is about 1200 EUR total?

tayl0r··on Show HN: HackerNews reimagined without tables or center elements.
Wow, I didn't even notice it. I wonder if you or I are the majority here?
tayl0r··on D3.js 2.10 Unleashed.
I just made this with nvd3 this past weekend: https://github.com/tayl0r/ib-simple-charts

I had some trouble with the tooltips and getting the x-axis to like Date objects, and I really wish all the examples showed the source data (not just some random function that generates the source data), but other than that it is pretty solid for boilerplate charts. The other weird thing is that some charts work without a height attribute on the svg / div element and others don't, and you kinda just have to figure that one out for yourself =)

tayl0r··on Europe Joins The Talent Wars
Other comments in the thread seem to fit what I'm seeing in job postings and from word of mouth. 50-60k EUR gross, maybe you can do better, maybe not. I could be totally wrong though, as the poster above me just said 40k.

If you want to make a ton of money as a programmer, the US is still where it's at IMO.

tayl0r··on Europe Joins The Talent Wars
Senior level software engineer here- I just relocated to Berlin from SF and I'm not seeing it. I've also talked to a lot of other programmers / employers of programmers here and no one has ever spoken of salaries that high.

If these salaries were real, I would not be trying to do side-projects full time from home!

tayl0r··on A note I sent to YCombinator
I just saw it on the front page.
tayl0r··on Valve Employee Handbook
To everyone wondering if it was leaked on purpose or whatever, it clearly says right at the top:

Originally uploaded to http://cdn.flamehaus.com/Valve_Handbook_LowRes.pdf Handbook courtesy of Valve

So, they shared it on purpose and are not trying to disguise it as a "leak".

tayl0r··on Valve Employee Handbook
It seems like you're wanting SVP / C-staff level pay (from your linked in profile), and it doesn't surprise me that Valve wouldn't pay that inflated amount.

Income Equality at work.

To be fair, you do seem like a talented person and I'm sure you are excelling at your current and past positions, but maybe you just aren't a good fit for Valve since they don't need more SVP level decision makers.

tayl0r··on Redditors who are rich (net worth $1 million+) - how did you get rich?
That is the zillion dollar question right there. We're facing it now and it's only going to get worse.

The economic system we have in place now seems like it breaks down when a portion of your population cannot join the workforce in any sort of useful fashion.

I don't think you can solve this problem with the current ideologies of the common American. It goes against the "core values" of many Americans so any attempt to change the system will be met with much opposition.

tayl0r··on Ask HN: What did you build in March?
The last day of the month I built my own screencast.com server for use with the Jing screenshot software. This enables you to take and upload screenshots with Jing, but it bypasses the real screencast.com server and uploads them to your own server instead (by redirecting screencast.com through dns or hosts file trickery).

This is useful for businesses who don't want their screenshots to go up on the web. They can keep all their screenshots on their intranet while still using the great Jing client for taking & sharing the images.

It needs polishing but it's a good 1st step into making something that is ready for production use.

tayl0r··on Why Twilio Wasn’t Affected by Today’s AWS Issues
Awesome post! "504 Gateway Time-out" was the best article I've read in a long time.
tayl0r··on DivCraft : New tool for creating HTML5 animations
I think the tweens you have on your main site look relatively good.

But when I go and look at the demos, I find myself shuddering at the elasticity and harshness of the tweens. I don't find them visually appealing at all.

Also, the link on the text rotation demo image is pointing to the masthead demo instead of the text rotation demo.

tayl0r··on Ask HN: Are you working on any side projects that make "small/passive" income?
I have a game on the iOS app store.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/river-cross-logic-puzzle-game/id...

It brings in $100+ per month. I'm pretty happy with it.

tayl0r··on Explained: The MySQL query that powers Correlated
You should use bind variables instead of directly inserting php variables in your SQL. You're just opening yourself up for SQL injection. >> WHERE poll_id != '$poll_id'
tayl0r··on Explained: The MySQL query that powers Correlated
Looking at that SQL reminds me how much better Oracle & MS SQL Server are at doing queries like that (thanks to analytic functions). You could get that table access down to 1 single index scan, instead of 4+.

MySQL and Postgres are fine at OLTP but when you get into analytics and reporting, they really show their lack of features.

tayl0r··on Dropbox Ticket: Enhanced mobile client communication security
Excellent point, but if you are packet sniffing your boss maybe that file has some merit =)

My only point is that it's not the huge deal that the community is making it out to be.

Anyways, this is the last time I attempt to go against the hive-mind.
