tathougies··on Twitter still hasn't unlocked the New York Post's account
Proven false? What are you talking about? A man is testifying in front of the Senate about the veracity of some of the claims under penalty of perjury...

EDIT: honestly, as a conservative who was supportive of the investigation surrounding impeachment, this kind of obvious media double treatment makes me want to double down -- as other conservatives have done -- in simply not supporting conservatives being investigated. It seems obvious that the allegations, the narrative, etc, is tightly controlled by the media, and conservatives are not given a fair shake, while even the most minute details of conservatives are examined in agonous detail (remember the Steele dossier, which is now confirmed Russian disinformation?). If the Hunter Biden allegations are true around the Ukraine prosecutor, then the impeachment was clearly punishing a sitting president for investigating corruption. That is shocking.

> Twitter is not a utility. It is not common infrastructure.

Great, then they should not be subject to section 230 protection, which protects them from liability from user-generated content. If they are a private publishing site, they should be entitled to all the privileges and responsibilities of such sites, as well established in the common law.

No. Unless they want to be sued, like with the Covington kid...

I mean, CNN and WaPo have admitted to lying about Nick Sandmann, but their accounts are still there. Clearly, Twitter is not interested in whether news outlets sometimes publish fake news.
tathougies··on Vaccine hopes rise as Oxford jab prompts immune response among old and young
How is this any different than a government bond program meant to finance the projects? Whether the profit is derived via increased stock price, or derived from interest paid by the government directly through taxes, how is it fundamentally different? The government can't typically just print money (to keep the economy okay). It has to either derive tax to get the funds, or borrow, which again privatizes the profit (in the form of interest).
tathougies··on The false promise of herd immunity for Covid-19
That's insane ... Flying during or near labor is extremely dangerous and unnecessary
tathougies··on The false promise of herd immunity for Covid-19
It's sad you think the potential of canceled football games is sadder than the preventable deaths of infants
tathougies··on The false promise of herd immunity for Covid-19
They didn't ask because they didn't think they'd be taken. People's perception of closures impacts what they do perhaps more than the legal enforcement.
tathougies··on The false promise of herd immunity for Covid-19
Yeah, except this summer of shark is being used to drive people into poverty and has caused non-COVID deaths and harm to many more, such as the deceased babies unable to receive medical attention in Australia due to the interstate border closures.
tathougies··on Ask HN: Why isn’t finance a part of the core curriculum at schools?
Studies show that formal financial education does not help people make better decisions. People tend to make the decisions their parents make. Classes teach people to regurgitate knowledge but rarely to apply it.

tathougies··on California appeals court rules Uber, Lyft must reclassify drivers as employees
This is ridiculous. California's gop is broadly successful as most of the states land is republican by far. And at the state level that's what matters. Plus it's only a few years ago that california had a gop governor. You can say lots of schwarzenegger but he didn't campaign like it's Kansas.
tathougies··on California appeals court rules Uber, Lyft must reclassify drivers as employees
But that's what I'm saying.. when the candidates are so similar that certain interest groups always get their way (for example biden and sanders agree on oil, unlike republicans and sanders), then certain special interests become privileged
tathougies··on Gig Workers' Only Chance to Pee Is Apparently an App
Certain occupations, whether salaried or not, don't lend themselves to perfect OSHA compliant workplaces. For example, my dad was a pharma salesman -- salaried full-benefits position. He raised our entire family on that. He drove a lot. He never worked in an office. There was no 'designated' spot to pee. The times I would go on the road with him, we always went to gas stations, or restaurants. It would be better to have an app honestly.

Certainly it is difficult to find public bathrooms in American cities. That is not a problem with gig work though. It affects a lot of occupations, many of them white collar.

tathougies··on California appeals court rules Uber, Lyft must reclassify drivers as employees
California's problem is precisely that it is a one party state. Even a few decades ago, California was not the one party state it is today. Having multiple candidates with meaningful differences on the ballot automatically lowers the ability of special interests to rule the state because it is difficult to be supported by people on completely different sides of the aisle.

The proposition that made California the way it is is the one that meant that the primaries are non-partisan and the final race is between the two top contenders. This means that special interests in California need only present their cause through the lens of leftism and they will automatically find sympathetic candidates in the top two, no matter who those are. Contrast this with a partisan primary system. In that system, on the final ballot, it would be difficult for special interests to formulate an argument appealing to both candidates.

EDIT: for some reason, I am downvoted but there is little engagement or actual refutation of what I'm saying. If you're going to downvote, at least say something. Otherwise, it makes it seem like the one-party state's propaganda arm is awake and working.

tathougies··on Facebook Manipulated the News You See to Appease Republicans, Insiders Say
Because Mother Jones is interested in parroting a narrative. Don't forget this same magazine wrote articles in favor of California jailing David Daleiden for the crime of exposing criminal activity that resulted in a Congressional investigation and widespread condemnation by the American people.
tathougies··on Justice Department: Resolution with Purdue Pharma and Sackler Family
Well, that's how it starts right? The claim that they are not going after the family is not truthful. The possibility is out there, and given that they have just secured one fo the largest judgements ever against a pharma company, Justice is clearly not afraid of the Sackler family.
tathougies··on Justice Department: Resolution with Purdue Pharma and Sackler Family
Well, they are going after them, if you read the article:

> The resolutions do not include the criminal release of any individuals, including members of the Sackler family, nor are any of the company’s executives or employees receiving civil releases.

That means Justice is leaving open the possibility of bringing criminal charges against the Sackler family.

The felonies they mention in the article are felonies committed by the corporation, which cannot be jailed, but -- due to the fact that Justice has forced the company to dissolve in its current state (pending approval) -- has been essentially sentenced to death. The company's assets (which are valuable and vital to public health) will be owned by a new legal person, a trust operating a public benefit corporation.

tathougies··on U.S. Accuses Google of Illegally Protecting Monopoly
Facebook has been so friendly to the republican party that they immediately blocked sharing of accusations against Joe Biden for impropriety while serving as the Vice President of the United States. Oh I forgot though... simply allowing republicans to speak online is nowadays akin to full on support for the GOP platform.
tathougies··on San Francisco’s political leadership has squandered a fortune (2019)
Have lots of hispanic family in rural california... I grew up in conservative california and when I visited this year... It's like I've never seen it. I don't believe the polls. Californians should actually go out and talk with the people who live in their state
tathougies··on San Francisco’s political leadership has squandered a fortune (2019)
Honestly this attitude is exactly why sf is a dump. It's not about abortion. The chance of getting a conservative leader is impossible in sf. Luckily california may turn red this year due to the hispanic vote.

> "Just add new construction" doesn't work if all that gets built is luxury apartments.

Building more luxury apartments creates more older units.

tathougies··on San Francisco Apartment Rents Crater Up to 31%, Most in U.S.
You are certainly not wrong. This is a major problem in many places in the country. It's gross. Portland and Seattle are definitely much worse than SF. LA is much nicer than what it used to be, and still better than SF, but I grew up in LA so I have the natural tendency to ignore everything bad with it.
tathougies··on Harvard, Oxford, Stanford doctors among leaders of global anti-lockdown movement
Well kudos to them for finally seeing reason, but I'm not willing to give them much of a break. They pushed for lockdowns full well knowing all these consequences before hand. Everyone (including myself) who mentioned a few months ago that lockdowns will make the poor poorer and will push large portions of the population into destitution were accused of being anti-science shills who cared more about property than human life. Now the chickens have come home to roost and the WHO has once again demonstrated its lack of understanding of topics beyond the realm of health. In and of itself of course, the WHO not being competent in running a society is not a bad thing -- doctors are not politicians after all -- but what is scary is how much influence they have had making societal decisions extending well beyond medicine.
tathougies··on Police killings more likely in agencies that get military gear, data shows
> If they are facing an opponent like that then call in the FBI, who generally have much better training, or ATF (no idea about their training).

Except those agencies aren't responsible for everday law enforcement, and some police departments are essentially fighting a war. For example, when I was a kid growing up in LA in the 90s, the gangs there were basically like warlords. Even recently, you can find examples of execution style gang murders in Los Angeles, and shootouts on the streets.

tathougies··on Google’s Supreme Court faceoff with Oracle was a disaster for Google
Ah right, the soft ethno-nationalism of implying that the only 'real countries' are the western democratic ones.... great...
tathougies··on Google’s Supreme Court faceoff with Oracle was a disaster for Google
Indeed it's quite ridiculous. What they mean to say is that the DNC would be center-right in Europe, which is an incredibly Euro-centric way to look at the world. In reality, if you consider the actual bulk of the planet, which would include mainly China and India, the DNC and RNC dichotomy is rather unclassifiable.

Asking Americans to implement the Canadian system of immigration will quickly earn you accusations of xenophobia and nazism.
