tasubotadas··on Rule of Three
I second this. Only remove duplication when it either becomes super obvious or painful.
tasubotadas··on Rule of Three
That's a mistake that leads to premature generalization
tasubotadas··on Scrum is a cancer
The OP barely has any experience in the field so... One bad gig is maybe 50% of his work experience.
tasubotadas··on Scrum is a cancer
I must live in some kind of alternative reality where 80% of teams that I worked with liked Scrum (and I lead tens of teams).

The remaining teams just needed Kanban.

Not sure what everybody else is doing here, but I have seen teams where before we started doing scrum+jira all tasks were coming on Skype and discord, and stakeholders were either micromanaging (programmers managed by non-programmers) or either would forget project for 1 month and would come back to find something delivered that completely missed expectations.

After moving to proper task tracking and clear planning and review rituals, the developer satisfaction went through the roof (before that people were borderline considering quiting)

tasubotadas··on Ask HN: Why did Python win?
Operator overloading + great interop with C - the ultimate cross platform (and most popular) language

Great standard library (Javascript still doesn't have one). Even better than Java's

Cross-platform

Interpreted language with minimal environment needs where just having python.exe is enough (compare build systems C or Java, or environment setup needed for PHP/perl)

Great DX given how simple core syntax and standard libraries are (again, compare with perl magic, or PHP madness)

Early numpy/scipy packages found amazing uptake in science community which acted as evangelists. This happened to great DX (scientists don't like coding C) and great C support (they still need C speed)

The guy in the Twitter pretty much mentions every red flag implementing scrum.

What did you expect the parent commenter to say? "you've done well and have shown that scrum doesn't work"?

tasubotadas··on Scrum is a cancer
The guys here come to the scrum retrospectives, stay silent the entire time, and then complain that scrum sucks.
tasubotadas··on Scrum is a cancer
It's sad that posts like these get so many points.

A sad take that's based on a sad experience with a great framework.

tasubotadas··on Code Llama, a state-of-the-art large language model for coding
Finally we meet the lifeless drone that everybody complains about in the interviews.

My suggestion for your next interview: decide to hire them just based on their leetcode score, but invite to the interview just to flex that you're still better at puzzle solving :-D

Perfect

If you are doing subclasses you are doing OOP wrong.

Exactly

tasubotadas··on Dart 3.1 and a retrospective on functional style programming in Dart
The last time I've checked, OOP and functional programming are orthogonal concepts.

EDIT: It means that there is no problem for the language to have both OOP & Functional. They don't have to choose one over another.

tasubotadas··on Tell HN: t.co is adding a five-second delay to some domains
This is mad take. Also, putting junk that nyt writes together with Reuters is just wrong.

tasubotadas··on Toyota has been developing a solid-state battery for EVs with a range of 745mi
The last time I've done calculations it was something like x2 of energy production increase is required to satisfy 100% migration to EVs.

Not that big of increase.

tasubotadas··on In the LLM space, "open source" is being used to mean "downloadable weights"
Generate data using ai, save it, it cannot be copyrighted or anything, data isn't a model, use it as much as you want for training.

tasubotadas··on Lets-Plot: An open-source plotting library for statistical data
Any good charting libraries for react? I've tried react-chart-js, Rechart and they all just... suck. Non-intuitive use, problems scaling in element containers.

Settled on nivo for now but it doesn't support multi-axis plots :/

tasubotadas··on Pulling my site from Google over AI training
"Ironically, the uniformity of the copies of Gutenberg’s Bible led many superstitious people of the time to equate printing with Satan because it seemed to be magical. Printers’ apprentices became known as the "printer’s devil." In Paris, Fust [a typographer] was charged as a witch. Although he escaped the Inquisition, other printers did not." (The Unsung Heroes, a History of Print by Dr. Jerry Waite 2001)"
tasubotadas··on The deindustrialization of Germany
Yes. The worst is yet to come.

- Germany is heavily reliant on industry (like Autos)

- Cheap energy has ended due to war in Ukraine

- The available replacements are going to be even more expensive (and they are still closing more nuclear plants)

- The production costs will increase reducing their competitiveness even further

- The competitives was bad even before this (VW vs Tesla anyone?)

- Once the huge layoffs and closures will begin, the entire economy will enter recession.

Industry-focuses businesses are now low-margin and high-competition (competition mostly coming from Asia). The same is happening here what happened during the shift of Agriculture economy into Industrial economy.

And the shift to services (tech/software specifically) was pretty much non-existent. Also, it's unlikely to become any better due to alienation of investors (who wants to invest in a country where everybody is taxed and red-taped into oblivion?).

So... who nows. Germany is probably going to pull a "Greece" on us :).

tasubotadas··on Python consumes 38x more energy than Java
You can write C in C++ but it won't be idiomatic C++. I've seen plenty of experienced "C++" developers that have no idea what is "shared_ptr".

"you need to be in the US"

"you need to sign NDA"

Amazing.

tasubotadas··on Training LLMs with AMD MI250 GPUs and MosaicML
"Performance was competitive with our existing A100 systems. We profiled training throughput of MPT models from 1B to 13B parameters and found that the per-GPU throughput of MI250 was within 80% of the A100-40GB and within 73% of the A100-80GB. We expect this gap will close as AMD software improves. "
