tarnith··on Is Krita ready for HDR painting?
Display technology will continue to improve like audio hardware has over the decades. We haven't matched the human eye yet.

Cameras are shooting 12-25 bits of dynamic range. Displays can't yet render this, but the data is being captured and better reflects what the eye can see as it adjusts looking around a scene. This gives a lot of latitude when processing RAWs (sensor data) to render out a final image in a chosen format (Currently commonly SRGB 8bpc but moving to 10bpc 709/2020)

No reason paintings or created works couldn't also fill out at least a ~24 bit dynamic range similar to audio (Hence the move to 10bpc, which gives roughly ~1.07e9 (2^10)^3 possible colours compared to ~1.67e6 (2^8)^3)

In painting this would let you have a lot more contrast before blowing out a highlight (hitting the digital limit in brightness representation and clipping or losing information), and a proper tonemapping curve combined with dithering can fold this down for lower capability displays. This also gives you a lot more range to work with when digitally colour mixing.

A similar thing already happens with 3D rendering workflows in Blender/C4D/Maya/etc. where an output curve is applied for tonemapping and colour correction.

This lets you work in an unconstrained space for processing/creating and then incorporates a mastering/release specific step for rendering out to a given display format. The great part is, as technology improves the original work can just be displayed as is. (Think about the progression from wire recording -> tape -> cassette -> CD -> direct master renders sold in lossless file format)

tarnith··on Intel Core i9-13900T CPU benchmarks show faster than 12900K 125W performance
Undervolt/downclock it? Afterburner or GPU Tweak, etc, will do this relatively easily. (I've undervolted AMD cards that come with ridiculous core voltages without having to drop clocks at all in past)

Almost everything is stock clocked past the point of diminishing returns right now. This Intel part looks to mostly be a downclocked version of existing 13900.

Look at the recent AMD 7900 vs 7900X. You can get 90-95% of the performance for far less power by just backing off the voltage and clocks a bit. (In their TDP terms going from 115w to 65w TDP, loses less than 5-10%)

Everyone's fighting for chart king/significant generational improvement number they can point to and missing the sweet spot on the efficiency curve, but you can bring it back yourself. I bet the 3080 still runs great at 50-100w less power limit/TDP depending on your use case and I doubt that will result in anywhere near a 1:1 perf/power reduction.

tarnith··on OP-1 field
Correct. In this case the laptop+audio interface is a lot closer to the BMW S1000RR if we're using this analogy for music production.

The OP-1 if we're using motorcycle analogies is like a Zero. Really cool, new tech, quirky, doesn't use gas (a traditional DAW) but also comes with a bunch of limitations (can't load any of your normal synths into it, have to work around sampling) kind of like the limited range of electric motorcycles.

Totally fine if what you want is an electric bike for city commuting or short trips, until you want to go on a weekend trip or a track day. Now you're waiting on charging, and limited in power.

I think we've stretched this analogy far enough. I wouldn't call a laptop with an audio interface and Ableton a Honda Civic. OP-1 fills a niche, but it certainly isn't high end performance in terms of audio quality or malleability. They're really cool, creative, unique ways of making music if you like the interface, but ultimately a quirky niche in terms of actual production.

tarnith··on Bitwig Studio 3: Enter The Grid.
I've been a steady user since version 1, and I've really enjoyed seeing this DAW progress.

The modulators and easy workflow/resampling (bouncing tracks) is very intuitive and efficient. The addition of this is going to really make it the ultimate sound design playground.

Looking forward to what this team continues to bring!

tarnith··on Ask HN: What is your goal for 2019?
Find some truly meaningful work, and get deeper into music.

Hobbywise, maybe build a eurorack and some planar speakers.

tarnith··on After landing a lucrative job at a tech startup, I had made a terrible mistake
Sounds like we've had similar Canadian startup experiences.

Expectations quickly rose to time on weekends, responsiveness to emails and requests at all hours of the day, and job duties ranging from DevOps and app development, to customer and client support for all issues after they let go of their customer support team.

I'm about ready for a bush somewhere.

tarnith··on Algorithmic Solution to My Insomnia
I've found the same, more than 7.5 or less and I wake up either feeling groggy or tired.
