tapsboy··on Show HN: Open Source Oddworks – Build a streaming platform for mobile tablet, TV
As a developer at a media company, I know first hand, the effort required to bring streaming video across all the disparate platforms. Even if 50% of what is promised works out great, it will be a fantastic product for every media company.
tapsboy··on G is for Google
Google Video was merged into Youtube

Orkut was wildly successful in Brazil and India, until they stopped building it for Buzz and Plus

Reader was hugely successful, which is why the outcry on its closing

Chromebooks are doing great, atleast on Amazon, the world's biggest retailer.

Dart pivoted into a compile-to-JS language, but is still alive

Motorola streamlined it's product lineup under Google and is doing fairly okay for Lenovo

Calling above items as failure is inaccurate. None of them were moonshots btw.

tapsboy··on Joyent Moves to Establish Node.js Foundation
I would rather like to see them continue operating like "be different, but together" so as to give a choice to users to either use the most cutting edge APIs or more stabler versions. Node.js could be like RHEL/Ubuntu LTS, where as IO.js could be like Fedora/Ubuntu Latest.
tapsboy··on Laravel 5 released
Sorry, meant to say "some of the things I like and the community ofcourse"
tapsboy··on Laravel 5 released
Having worked with Kohana, CodeIgniter and WP, Laravel is the reason I started writing PHP again. Also being a node developer, Laravel feels at home with Express(both influenced by Sinatra).

Artisan command line utility, Migrations for DB version control, Blade template engine and the neat directory structure are some of the things I like apart from the community ofcourse

tapsboy··on Atlas by Hashicorp
Great job Hashicorp. Couldn't find my favorited public boxes, but could discover new boxes here https://vagrantcloud.com/boxes/search
tapsboy··on The Next Chapter
No. But our eyeballs watching those paid ads on free broadcast TV are enabling payments + profit for the production of that content. The numbers may vary by broadcaster and program, but the business model is clear, or atleast was.
tapsboy··on Apple Built A SIM Card That Lets You Switch Between AT&T, Sprint, And T-Mobile
With Multipath TCP across multiple LTE networks, this could enable substantial improvement in network performance.

Edit: I meant it as a future possibility

tapsboy··on Alleged leak of more than 5M Gmail accounts
I just tried it with an old account. It correctly gave out the first two letters of existing password

Luckily, 2FA was already enabled.

tapsboy··on Ask HN: Adult industry coder wants to transition to mainstream/startup scene?
If you have exhaustive experience with video, I am sure a lot of "mainstream" media companies in NY could be interested. Start off as a consultant with small gigs, so you avoid the corporate HR
tapsboy··on WhatsApp issued takedown against alternative clients a week before acquisition
It is a markdown version posted by github for the original DMCA takedown notice sent to github

https://github.com/github/dmca/blob/master/README.markdown

tapsboy··on Free static page hosting on Google App Engine in minutes
How is it better than just using Dropbox or S3 or even Google Drive to host static content?
tapsboy··on Grunt.js: Tips and Tricks
HN continues to amaze me. I was just looking for a solution to creating multiple build files using grunt and requirejs. Found out how exactly under the "Dynamic Tasks" section.
tapsboy··on Mangalyaan, India's Mars Orbiter, has successfully commenced its journey to Mars
That's unlikely to happen soon. Five years back, on behalf of my company, I went to make a technical presentation on how a CMS could benefit in maintaining the website for one of their centers. To my shock, they wanted the CMS to write to a Compact Disc and the CD would then be inserted on the server for copying the content. All of that to manage security risks.

That said, I am amazed they now maintain a neat Facebook Page and live stream launches

tapsboy··on Mangalyaan, India’s First Mars Mission
As an atheist, it bothers me, when the "secular democratic republic" uses public money to hold ceremonies that cater to one community/religious traditions
tapsboy··on Google’s iron grip on Android: Controlling open source by any means necessary
Yahoo internals were even discussing ideas of creating their own fork of Android, way back in 2010. Nothing happened.
tapsboy··on Google’s iron grip on Android: Controlling open source by any means necessary
And Aliyun OS And Baidu Yi May be even the newly funded CyanogenMod company
tapsboy··on A $45 Android tablet
I bought one such tablet couple of years back( Velocity Micro Cruz T301) for $69 on woot. The tablet was pretty much useless for daily use. Flashed AOSP and installed play store. Still useless, as most apps don't show up for that device. However, works okay as a cloud connected photoframe.
tapsboy··on Bose founder, Amar Bose, has died at 83
The Bose trio is an inspiration to many in India 1) Jagadish Chandra Bose 2) Satyendra Nath Bose 3) Amar Bose
tapsboy··on Who Are the H-1Bs?
To provide a counter perspective, even if you consider that the un-employable majority would be 90% (highly unlikely), the remaining 10% equal the total number of engineering graduates from US and that is if you consider that entire 100% graduating out of American colleges are employable.
tapsboy··on Google releases some Glass source code
For completeness of the headline (specifically 'declares platform open'), Google needs to also make the Mirror API available to those, who are not part of Explorer Program, may be via a simulator.
tapsboy··on AT&T Announces Intent to Build 1 Gigabit Fiber Network in Austin
Infact,

"However, in Austin, the agreements that Google has signed with the City of Austin are no different than the ones that AT&T and Time Warner have signed according to Laura Morrison, an Austin city councilwoman."

tapsboy··on Registration for Google I/O 2013 will open on March 13, 2013 at 7:00 AM PDT
I think it will be interesting to look at the numbers and the queuing challenges faced by Google during Nexus4/10 launch and io2013, if they ever release it
tapsboy··on Ask HN: What is the coolest JS library out there?
I also found http://jsdb.io useful
tapsboy··on "Website like Amazon"
May be someday in the future, when AI robots can program and programming (as we know it today) becomes a commodity, $1000 might be feasible
tapsboy··on How to terminate your worst enemy's Dropbox account for only $795
Why has dropbox not considered a github style context changing feature till now. I am surprised.
tapsboy··on [dead]
Yep. Finite set of prior art < Infinite set of everything else
tapsboy··on Google Nexus 4 Sells Out In Less Than An Hour (in Australia)
I am.. Hopefully, get the 32GB, if I can purchase it during the window. I wish, however, if they offered an unlocked 3G model too(I can live without LTE). I will have to use freedompop for now.
tapsboy··on New $250 Chromebook
While $249 is good, ChromeOS should start seeing traction when they get this one out for $199 and an ARM Chromebox for $99. Even better $49 for ChromeOS on an HDMI stick.
