taproot··on Just me or frequency of hacks going up?
More disclosure as far as anyone can really tell.

I guess its a metric on its own just not a very good one.

taproot··on JQuery is not enough - Why should I start using a MVC framework?
Because living in the 80s was never a good idea? I'm still dumbfounded by how many people don't think mvc is industry standard, or by how many think they're doing their boss some big favour by catching up 20 years on their own time.

That may sound a little harsh but im not the one comparing "jQuery programming" to mvc. JQuery never claimed to fix your shitty inline JavaScript, it just makes it easy to write really bad code.

taproot··on Newly Declassified Documents Show How the Surveillance State was Born
Whhat does that have to do with my post or the article?
taproot··on Newly Declassified Documents Show How the Surveillance State was Born
Of course, none of that happened. Although President Obama could have reined in the surveillance state, as we all know, he did not.

On the NSA, Obama has made the opposite calculation.

Seems like it does to me.

taproot··on Newly Declassified Documents Show How the Surveillance State was Born
There wasn't any. Did you not read my post? I was trying to point out that you can't just make baseless claims like that.
taproot··on Newly Declassified Documents Show How the Surveillance State was Born
None of it... I think you missed the part about baseless claims I was getting at.
taproot··on Newly Declassified Documents Show How the Surveillance State was Born
Racist fuck.

Oh I can't make baseless claims on the internet? What's your excuse?

Look I don't really like how Obama has handles anything but laying the blame on him is pretty fucking retarded when these programs have been in the works for decades.

taproot··on How could code review discourage code disclosure?
A lot to read but quite a good discussion and a lot of good points raised. Before reading I thought here we go some stupid bashing on the review process. But its not that at all there seems to be a definite issue with the review process when the reviewer has bias. Which I guess is pretty obvious but it does give a lot of insight into some of the reviews I've both given and received.
taproot··on Move over Bootstrap and Foundation, welcome Semantic UI
I think its horrible an example of a decent semantic class would be div class=loud leave css inheritance up to less mixins.
taproot··on Move over Bootstrap and Foundation, welcome Semantic UI
Of course it can, if it offers something different. Compared to bootstrap 3 I don't really see it. Even their own biased comparison doesn't really show a difference if any. For their comparison I would have preferred to see what makes it different on the less side of things. Ie used bootstrap properly.
taproot··on Ask HN: Are you happy in your current job? (y/n)
Never. But yes.
taproot··on $649 iPhone 5s Costs Apple $199 - Hardware - Handhelds/PDAs -
Standard 500 apple tax. Its worse elsewhere, in nz the 5c is fetching more than 1000nzd.

Please don't vote me down its pretty well known you pay for the design, build quality, brand and community or perhaps better said ecosystem on top of the bare hardware cost when you buy apple. This "tax" isn't exactly a bad thing especially compared to alternative factory junk that comes out of Sony or Samsung.

taproot··on Ask HN: High-frequency trading (HFT) for individual investors?
Like playing the ends, I believe you need substantial bankrolling to turn a profit as your betting on the smallest gains with a very large amount of money.

For the individual you would either need to be very good (best of the best) or do it for a very long time. You would still require a sizeable bankroll.

taproot··on Chaos Computer Club breaks Apple TouchID
Where the fuck did that come from? It is neither baseless or FUD. That fingerprint will be sent over the wire at some point and the NSA will gladly pick it up. How you think otherwise is beyond me.

What operating system I prefer really has nothing to do with it, even if it is linux.

Posted from my iPhone, android, third mac mini, 2nd mac air, or first thinkpad who the fuck knows (or cares? oh you obviously)

taproot··on Chaos Computer Club breaks Apple TouchID
> That is definitely a significant improvement.

Sure is a significant improvement for some people at least. http://t.co/EK3sdeloUX

taproot··on IPhone was first, but so was Motorola
I still have no idea why they went with this C thing. Why would you not just release a 5 and a 5S at the same time? It would have the same effect without all the negative connotations. Nobody wants to be cheap - but everybody wants a deal. If they really just need a new second gen letter they could have just gone with almost any other letter. "i" perhaps..
taproot··on Rethinking the guest operating system
I'm confused why can't docker run on bsd?
taproot··on Ask HN: How do you get hired for a senior role without "experience"?
The thing about titles is very true often senior or junior means two very different things to different companies in this industry. Just follow the money.
taproot··on Rethinking the guest operating system
This sounds like a great opportunity for anyone wanting to get into os development with a few easy tasks still todo.

I'm curious how you would configure and manage your applications. Like are you able to attach to the input and output streams from the host or would you still get some basic form of bash to manage it?

> If you're running a company with 50+ employees that is having success on Google, and Google explicitly tells you what you're doing is OK, you'd probably make a similar decision.

Google doesn't click on the links it shows, your customers do. What google says is "OK" for them, is not always going to be "OK" for your potential customers.

Try giving this recent submission a read: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6399494

Also, what does running a company with 50+ employees have to do with making a similar decision? You'd think with more employees you'd be more likely to find the guy that stands up and says "this is fucking retarded what are you thinking"

> At the time of the Matt Cutts video, EE was serving the full content to users who clicked through - the answer was just buried at the bottom of the page. Crummy, sure. Definitely not going to win them many friends. Worth getting so angry over? Not in my mind.

I don't know about you but when I have no idea how to fix a mission critical bug and need a fix ASAP and I search google but all I get is pages and pages of links to your site which "doesn't give me the answer" i get pretty pissed off, especially because you're giving google the answer in order to clutter up all those results pages and rank relevant.

And I say "doesn't give me the answer" because, just so you know, I never knew there was answers at the bottom of the page until jeff pointed it out.

Look, I get it questions and answers are just metrics on a screen to you, but questions and answers to the users are MUCH much more. You broke google, fucking with us when we least needed a fucking with. And to me, that is worth getting angry over.

> reasonable arguments in support of non-open models (and I'm not saying this is one of them)

Then what the hell are you talking about? I am yet to see a reasonable argument in support of their business practices. Please link me to one if I missed it - because I don't think it exists.

The only thing I seem to see repeated is "some googley company did what we did but offered it for free and we have kids to feed so let us do shady things to keep our dated business model afloat and don't hate on us over it!"

> events are what you have under the pile of turtles.

What a timeless reference.

I have to agree though, the AP is over reaching a fair bit with that statement, there are plenty of ways to implement message based systems that don't suffer from a god complex.

taproot··on Angry entrepreneur replies to patent troll with racketeering lawsuit
There wasn't really any other outcome its why trolling works in the first place. While govts are starting to take note (its affecting non geek industries now...) They're a while off fixing it.

And also on the topic, piss enough people off eventually you'll find one of us willing to throw business "logic" out the window n fight back.

taproot··on Angry entrepreneur replies to patent troll with racketeering lawsuit
I knew almost nothing about this guy before reading this but I must say, karma be damned, this guy is legend... wait for it... dary!
taproot··on NIST "strongly" suggests dropping its own encryption standard
Laws surrounding murder by and large aren't all that important. If it wasn't illegal you'd just have mob justice filling the gap, as murder is generally frowned upon quite severely by society.

Ideas surrounding freedom, liberty, and privacy are very complex, easily confused, and often forgotten until its too late. The laws around these things are mechanisms which help protect what you're country supposedly holds dare.

But in answer to your actual question, would you believe them if they said they hadn't?

taproot··on Voyager 1 has been traveling for about a year through plasma between stars
Gen pop don't get smarter if you don't make them think. Confusion can be useful and in this case likely a good bit of medicine. Grade school education level of understanding on anything is pretty useless and implying that they cant do better insults pretty much everyone. Hence the d/v's.
taproot··on Voyager 1 has been traveling for about a year through plasma between stars
Please make a reply if you recall the name or author, even some keywords and general publication year and I can probably track it down.

Would like to read.

taproot··on Twitter Files For IPO
Watch out guys Twitter is doing something different.

On the web there is far more money in direct response right now because that's the easiest to measure and we have the platforms well ingrained in all our systems.

To say that brand based advertising isn't required or has no place is contrary to everything we know about advertising. You don't see the coke logo 50 times a day for nothing.
