taphangum··on Launch HN: Sixty (YC S17) – Freelancer Marketplaces for SaaS Companies
This is brilliant
taphangum··on Ask HN: Why are we (developers) way overpaid for what we do?
Saw this first hand at one of the companies I worked at. One developer had built the ENTIRE company backend on his own. A system that every member of staff used on a daily basis to get their work done and that kept the whole $40m+ a year operation going. I'm not 100% sure what he was earning, but I doubt it was more than $80k a year.

Goes to show that creation of wealth and accumulation of wealth are not the same thing.

taphangum··on Scott's Cheap Flights: Growing a small side project into a booming business
Tech provides leverage horizontally, not vertically.

As programmers, we often fool ourselves into believing the opposite.

taphangum··on Ask HN: What is your take on being a better writer?
Understand your audience.

Speak their language.

Say what you really want to say.

taphangum··on Why do so few people major in computer science?
This is basically how I learned to program.
taphangum··on Show HN: Real-time notes app built with Vue.js, inspired by Notational Velocity
Love seeing examples like this. If anyone is interested in more in-depth Vue examples and back and forth, check out the VueJS subreddit here: https://www.reddit.com/r/vuejs/.
taphangum··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell?
You started this in January if I'm not mistaken, right?

Amazon Seller Analytics Software

Haven't really had time to work on it but its a great niche and the backend is solid (built in Laravel).

taphangum··on Ask HN: Were you a procrastinator and could overcome it? How did you do?
Procrastination is basically you being out of alignment with what you really want to be doing. On a larger scale that just that task that you are wanting to do at the moment.

I've found that when I align myself mentally, spiritually and physically with what I feel I truly should be doing, procrastination reduces dramatically.

That's a hard thing to do, though. Takes a lot of thinking and meditation. But it's achievable.

taphangum··on Ask HN: Did anybody bootstrap a successful business by hiring a freelancer?
I basically built MyAppTemplates.com off of Elance. IMO the key thing was in working with freelancers who 1. Were very responsive by email and 2. Didn't need a lot of explaining in order to 'get it'.

This apart from the obvious requisite skills necessary to do whatever the job was ofcourse.

taphangum··on Fewer than 3% of cars sold in the U.S. have manual transmissions
And all of them are owned by rental companies, it seems.

taphangum··on Ask HN: $1k+ side projecters, what was the best thing you did to market it?
Thanks for sharing Courtland!
taphangum··on Ask HN: What will happen when ads won't be profitable no more?
Native advertising and 'product placement' type ads like a mention in a podcast/blog post will probably become more popular and expensive.
taphangum··on Ask HN: Those making over $1K/month on side projects, what did you make?
Ah this is cool. I'm thinking about making a passive income sim game for the web. Didn't think of it as a monetizable thing but your experience is changing my mind.
taphangum··on Ask HN: Those making over $1K/month on side projects, what did you make?
Where did you get the initial traffic?
taphangum··on Ask HN: What should I learn as my first programming language?
P.H.P
taphangum··on Ask HN: How do you keep motivated if nobody supports you?
There's tons out there if you will look.
taphangum··on Ask HN: What books did you read as a kid that inspired you?
Rich Dad Poor Dad. Gets a lot of hate but it completely changed my whole outlook on life and money. Still influences me to this day.
taphangum··on Evidence for Africans in Britain from the Bronze Age to the Medieval Period
It seems ridiculous to me that there is any surprise that people (of all hues) have always been migrating. It's literally what humans do (and animals for that matter), and have been doing since we first arrived on this planet. The level of admixture that we can now see is in ALL of our DNA makes it even more amazing that people are surprised by this.
taphangum··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell? (2016)
https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-content-calendar-lite/ - A drag and drop content calendar for WordPress. You can literally drag and drop posts to different dates on a calendar and they'll post automatically when the date comes round.

I built it last year, along with a premium version (which auto-suggests what you should write based on low competition kW opportunities) but ended up not getting around to releasing it. The free plugin is up on WordPress and has about 700 downloads.

I'm willing to sell the free + (unreleased) premium plugin for the right price.

taphangum··on Ask HN: Successful Saas owners, how long did your first version take to build?
2 months
taphangum··on Cron checker
This. Simulating cron's is the most frustrating thing I do in my workday.
taphangum··on Ask HN: What is your failed project?
Hey thanks! I actually built something with the plugin itself that does exactly this. Lost motivation to see it through though. Might just go ahead and release pro on code canyon now.
taphangum··on Ask HN: What is your failed project?
https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-content-calendar-lite/ - A simple content calendar for WordPress. 1 year old. Def didn't get the traction I was expecting. :)
taphangum··on The best minds of my generation
Surely best does not only mean talent
taphangum··on The best minds of my generation
The right answer.
taphangum··on Ask HN: Do you have a profitable side project? How long did it take to achieve?
Stupidity. Did it to raise money for the 'big idea'. Went nowhere. Next time, I'll hold.
