tanto··on Hmsklt – App to help friends form deeper relationships
Deep connections are best build in real life by investing time into a relationship. I worry that for a lot of young people real friendship is getting really hard to come by nowadays.
tanto··on Lessons learned from 15 years of SumatraPDF, an open source Windows app
When I open PDFs I often want to edit the filename to adjust it to the content. SumatraPDF is awesome and opposed to Adobe Reader and other PDF readers it does not take an exclusive lock on the PDF file so you can edit its filename. The fact that it is extremely fast is another big benefit.
tanto··on Google turned me into a serial killer
Is not really hard to imagine that more automation of this kind might result in some automated processes which results in someone get shot at a border by light handed policy.

This kind of thing should have very hard legal consequences for a company like Google.

Imagine being labeled as some kind of murder/rapist/pedophile whatever and moving into a neighborhood which gets angry fast.

tanto··on GME stock halted trading after +103% daily
SEC numbers and a few other sources. I read somewhere that currently the estimated number of shorts is 4x actual number of actual shares. Not sure if it's true though.
tanto··on Revolut has stopped trading GME and AMC
Can someone explain to me how the volume of GME compares to the FAANG stocks? How can a few retail investors create such an impact that clearing houses are hitting limits compared to the daily amount of value traded on the top 100 caps.

I mean we have the SEC watching over everything so I am sure there is nothing shady going on here. /s

Seriously: Can someone explain as I would like to understand it?

tanto··on E Ink has developed a 2nd generation Advanced Color E-Paper
This would most probably benefit big cooperations more than smaller ones as they can use money to speed up RnD and time to market. I can think of 1000 ways to make the patent system more fair but also 1001 to game each approach. It's a tough but to crack.

tanto··on Tesla to raise up to $5B in share offering, its second in three months
I don't think you are correct. You imply there are a lot of people willing to buy for the current price. I think the scenario is different.

A professional trader is happy if he makes 10% or 20% a year. This is considered for most a great achievement.

The average Joe whose friend told him that he can get rich buying Tesla stocks will only sell for 200%, 300% or even 1000%+ on his micro shares.

We got a market full of people which go in and buy for whatever is there and try to sell for a lot more. Sometimes they panic and sometimes they forget about it.

Additionally we currently have a lot of index funds forced to buy because of the inclusion. Which is genius move of Musk/Mizuno and others.

It's hard to predict where Tesla, Zoom and others will end up. I wouldn't dare to make any prediction. They might grow into their evaluations given time or a lot of average Joe's might decide its time to pay rent or even buy a house. Let's wait and see.

tanto··on Tesla to raise up to $5B in share offering, its second in three months
It’s not like 600B evaluation is equal to being able to sell for 600B. Let me explain.

If you got a company named T with a total of 100 shares. Now they want to raise money and someone is willing to pay $10 for a share. You get a market cap of $1000. They create the extra share and someone is still willing to pay $10 a share. Magically they are worth $1010.

Now T is selling the share for $10 and the next guy willing to buy only wants to pay $9. Magically the market cap drops to $909.

Right now many Tesla share owners believe they will get rich by holding. Someday all of them might realize at the same time everybody is holding and decide to sell. If that day is tomorrow it will not be 600B actual dollars changing ownership.

If Tesla would raise 25% market cap they would destroy the stock. I guess it might take at least a month or more for the market to absorb 1% new shares.

Right now we have a market where a lot of people sold and the same or new investors freshly bought again and are optimistic. We got many people buying and not so much selling. Market cap is in a way a to simplistic metric.

tanto··on Wim Hof’s teachings about breath work and the health benefits of cold plunges
Sound intriguing to try out. I have plantar fasciitis most mornings also a diet change helped me a lot reduce the pain. Did you make any other changes apart from the breathing exercises?
tanto··on Wim Hof’s teachings about breath work and the health benefits of cold plunges
Is there a general timeframe where people experience the benefits of the breathing experiences? Like do I have to do it for weeks, month or years until I feel the effect?

tanto··on Gates Foundation program will issue home testing kits for Covid 19 in Seattle
I don't get why the people elect presidents and parties whom interestst clear don't align with theirs. They elect people which promise them they will basically destroy governmental institutions and THAN complain the the government doesn't work. That's like ordering poisoned food and than complaining about the cook...
tanto··on Google to stop giving Android license for upcoming phones in Turkey over fine
Problem is that the leadership at Google/Apple has to publicly agree with western values. If they really believe in them or not I don't know. To some degree there is an incentive to respect e.g. human rights.

The leadership at Huawei has to be very careful if they want to state agreement or acceptance of western values. That might even put them into prison. If they dare to act on western values in their own country they might be killed.

I personally prefer the company which at least has to act as if they value my humanity than the one which outright would strip it from me anytime as there is no incentive at all to consider it.

tanto··on Have we really measured gravitational waves?
None taken. I indeed don't have much insight into modern physics experiments. Can you recommend other physicist which give different insights into LIGO or other experiments?
tanto··on Have we really measured gravitational waves?
Maybe I misunderstood Sabine Hossenfelder but she wrote:

> They just throw away data that don’t look like they want it to look.

If I take white noise and an assumption about how my data should look like I can basically prove anything.

If I take two white noise generators I am pretty sure I will still be able to find a signal which more less appears at the same time at both generators.

I hope they did more than just select the data which fits their assumption.

tanto··on Have we really measured gravitational waves?
I am a bit shocked that the work by LIGO is so... unprofessional. How can one give away a Novel prize so easily.
tanto··on Gitlab: don't discuss politics at work
As many here seem to like the idea of not a non political workplace couple quick questions:

- If I work at a workplace which produces a deadly weaponize-able Gas (lets for random reasons call it Zyklon B) should I care for politics or just do my job and provide any customer with my product?

- If I offer storage (e.g. for Cars, Git-Repos, Shoes, ...) should I care if maybe one of my customers is this Gas producing company which needs some storage?

You see where I am getting? There seems to be this trend that politics is some side business which people should only think about when they do either nothing or do it as a job. I don't think Democracies will survive this way.

tanto··on Why the Amazon Is on Fire
Wouldn't that incentivize them to sell more cattle to create more tax income and in return more proceeds to them? Also you are saying

> people living in the amazon basin

are the ones producing all the beef or rather some big land lords?

I concur with the taxation but not paying the money to some other country - rather invest in alternatives.

tanto··on Facebook Is Giving Advertisers Access To Your Shadow Contact Information
Does your weed dealer provide the service for free? If you want to be treated as a $$$ paying customer start paying. Problem with social networks and $$$ is that network effects will not come into effect as not everyone will be willing to pay.

There are actually ethical information dealers but they require you to pay them as you are paying your weed dealer.

tanto··on US to make at least $285m cut to UN budget after vote on Jerusalem
Tbh I wouldn't wonder if Trump is really a Russian asset. The damage he has done to the US reputation is irreparable. The US didn't have a good standing internationally before him but right now most people I do know consider the US as the most dangerous country to world peace. The whole refugees crisis in Europe started with the US destabilising the near East and now the president of the US considers all refugees gay or terrorist's or both and can't most probably show any near East country on a world map.

As you replied to my comment and you indicate that I don't understand it please elaborate. What is the use-case of bitcoin for the common man? Please only count the ones where using classical monetary systems (cash, credit card, etc.) are worse.
