tambre··on Chromium project finds that 70% of security defects are memory safety problems
Chromium's base library. Includes basic utilities useful across the codebase, e.g. hash maps, containers, pointer wrappers, logging, metaprogramming utilities, etc.
tambre··on Goals and Priorities for C++
>- Stealing C# attribute notation instead of having the ridiculous __stdcall sort of convention

C++17 introduced the attributes in the form of [[attribute]], e.g. [[maybe_unused]], [[fallthrough]]. Clang also supports e.g. [[gnu::packed]] instead of __attribute__((packed)).

>- A real keyword for include guards

"#pragma once" is de facto supported everywhere. The general stance seems to have been to not bother with standardizing, as modules were a better solution anyway.

>- Function pointer syntax sugar

Aliasing function pointer seems mostly reasonable?

    using my_function_pointer = double(*)(int a, int b);

tambre··on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Now Has S3 Compatible APIs
>It requires Amazon to have a massive and expensive choke point in their network: load balancers. When a customer tries to upload to S3, she is given a single upload URL to use. For instance, s3.amazonaws.com/<bucketname>.

Now that Amazon has deprecated the single URL version and replaced it with region-specific URLs (e.g. s3.dualstack.us-east-1.amazonaws.com) and tooling has been mostly updated, this huge reason for not supporting the S3 API is gone.

Maybe aligning functions would help. The compiler likely does that for the C version.
tambre··on What Outranks Thread Priority?
Debian debug symbol packages are pretty nice [0].

But if you want a repository for your own debug symbols, multitude of symbol versions and ease of use then you're out of luck.

Debug symbols do help a ton on Windows.

As he explains, processes with a GUI trying really hard to render despite it not being possible, as the screen hasn't been unlocked yet. Presumably another Windows bug.

Also hardware drivers initializing stuff. Including spinning for an eternity – his mouse and keyboard driver apparently spinned for 700ms.

In this post they're adding an option to do this. Albeit only to a single earlier firmware.

> there is little (maybe zero?) hardware encoding support out there

There are companies offering cloud AV1 FPGA encoding on beefy servers. I'd imagine the performance and quality is much better than what is available to mere mortals right now.

> Maybe it’s whatever archive.to and similar sites do that Cloudflare hates?

What do you mean? archive.is blocks DNS requests from Cloudflare servers because they don't include the end user's IP range in the request using an optional DNS extension. They do answer such DNS requests coming from others.

tambre··on Rocket League left behind on macOS and Linux due to DirectX 11 shift
> Not to mention that DirectX uses a totally different shader language than Vulkan, so you have to get in there and translate all that code over.

Vulkan doesn't really have a shader language unless you want to write SPIR-V assembly. Thus you'd use either GLSL or HLSL. Microsoft's own DirectX HLSL compiler[0] supports SPIR-V as a target in addition to DXIL.

> As in the cost to bring quality to this level while disregarding encoder and decoder complexity.

AV1 is amazing for YouTube, Netflix and torrent-scale videos currently.

I can't find the reference for this, but in the beginning the codec developers and big companies had meetings. The answer from big companies for how much encode time increase would be acceptable was 100x to 1000x the current standard. Thus the design.

Of course the encode time problem will be solved for regular users too once AV1 encode ASICs for consumer hardware enter the market in 3–5 years. There are a few solutions already offering cloud FPGA encoding alongside beefy servers. If streaming bandwith costs are a significant issue for you, then you can easily afford that.

tambre··on AMD Ryzen 4000 Mobile APUs
The speed of CPUs doesn't really matter for codecs these days. Only for adoption during the first few years until fixed-function hardware starts shipping.

Besides, most of the processing burden is on encoding. CPU performance hasn't resulted in better codecs, but rather advances in encoding methods. AV1 encode is 100x slower than previous codecs, but that's fine due to the savings at scale.

tambre··on AMD Ryzen 4000 Mobile APUs
Very unlikely. They'd be the first to ship customer PC parts with AV1 decode support. But the next generation almost certainly will. Same goes for other vendors, for Nvidia post-Ampere, for Intel post-Icelake/Tigerlake/whatever the next is nowadays, etc.

Otherwise, there are AV1 decode IPs available, including a SoC or two. Plus some very recently announced set-top boxes and TVs. So you'll definitely be seeing some hardware with AV1 support shipping this year.

tambre··on Average Denuvo cracking time is now 75 days
Overlord Gaming has done significant benchmarking with Denuvo and after the developer removed Denuvo. There's one on loading times [0]. And others on performance and disk size.

Loading times obviously varied per game, but the differences for most games were pretty significant.
