tambre··on PC Engines EOL
Only the OPNsense seems to support ECC memory. The Intel boards would be so amazing if not for their artifical segmentation.
tambre··on Ampere Altra Dev Kit has launched 32, 64, 80 core arm64 processor
Does it have ECC?
tambre··on Linode rebranded as Akamai’s cloud computing services
Is their IPv6 implementation is still broken? It was the reason I moved off immediately after banging my head for a few hours because they somehow managed to screw it up despite RFCs advising how to do such deployments.
tambre··on PC CPU Shipments See Steepest Decline in 30 Years
Adlink sells an COM-HPC motherboard [0] and a corresponding Ampere Altra module [1].

tambre··on DNS0: The European public DNS that makes your internet safer
No IPv6 in 2023, is this a joke?
tambre··on Ask HN: Is it just me or is 5G strictly worse than LTE?
You seem to be confusing the set of standards called 5G and the high-frequency mmWave bands that are an option part of it. mmWave makes little sense except in special areas and that's also why there's very very limited deployements of it. On 5G as a whole? Lots of network-level architecture and signalling improvements still, but depends on NSA/SA, used bands, implementation quality, end-user equipment bugginess, etc.
tambre··on Which GPU(s) to get for deep learning
I would be surprised if it did. But you probably shouldn't do professional work on GPUs that lack ECC memory.
tambre··on I'm shadow banned by DuckDuckGo and Bing
It would be quite surprising if reverse records were the reason. The vast majority of sites certainly don't have them pointing back. Impossible to do with many providers and probably basically all CDNs.
tambre··on Web hackers vs. the auto industry
From R155 4.3.1 "threats regarding back-end servers related to vehicles in the field" covers it? Of course the whole standard is still pretty focused on the on-vehicle side of things, but it certainly touches on it.

Surprised to see these even mentioned on HN. I've read R155 as part of my job and am responsible for implementing it.

tambre··on Poll: What's the best laptop for Linux these days?
Same. I would really love to see a laptop like the Latitude 5430, but just with ECC added.
tambre··on Estonia: Become an E-Resident
That's only possible if you have national defence obligation, i.e. you completed the compulsory draft or have applied so otherwise. In both cases you need to have citizenship, basic education, of good health, not in jail, no criminal proceedings and a few other minor things. See §81 of the Military Service Act [0].

tambre··on My mesh shaders talk at XDC 2022
Is there any point in switching to mesh shaders if I don't have any use for the flexibility they provide? For example, do the new semantics allow faster execution on newer hardware for converted boring vertex shaders?
tambre··on The HTTP crash course nobody asked for
Is there anything the spec that actually requires that? AFAIK it's just that major implementators (browsers) have chosen to enforce TLS.
tambre··on Auto Safety Tech Adds New IC Design Challenges
I just wish that there would be a viable alternative to NVIDIA's Tegra SoCs for full autonomy level compute.
tambre··on IPv6 support for cloning Git repositories from GitHub
Doesn't that still only remove the records from DNS? So far for all Cloudflare sites that IPv6 disabled I've been able to derive the IPv6 address by hand and make requests without issues.
tambre··on IPv6 support for cloning Git repositories from GitHub
Currently there are no proxies in front and you connect directly to their baremetal server hosting the site. I presume the anti-spam system is custom-built and part of their own codebase. Cloudflare is officially sanctioned, but retired from widespread use.
tambre··on IPv6 support for cloning Git repositories from GitHub
The most touted reason is that their anti-spam systems only support IPv4. Their old Cloudflare endpoint however is still alive and you can't disable IPv6 on Cloudflare so feel free to add the following to your /etc/hosts:

Interestingly when I tried to post the above comment over IPv6 I got a Cloudflare "You have been blocked" page. This might be something they do not want you to know! :D
tambre··on TSMC to begin 3nm chip production next month
Basically all SoCs these days have plenty of different clock frequencies for different parts. Number of clock domains can easily be over a hundred.
tambre··on Hacker News moved off AWS again at 10:17 PM PST
> Do you know why they fail to implement ipv6 for years?

Little motivation to make changes and their anti-spam systems only handle IPv4.

> Would be cool if you could share more information how to do that.

Put the bytes of the IPv4 Cloudflare endpoint at the end of a Cloudflare IPv6 Anycast prefix and voila. Fastly is similar but you take the bytes containing the site ID in the IPv4 address.

Also seems they didn't forget to update Cloudflare this time around. :)

HN Cloudflare IPv4: 104.16.104.110

HN Cloudflare IPv6: 2606:4700::6810:686e

tambre··on Hacker News moved off AWS again at 10:17 PM PST
It's on their list fortunately. Until then you can derive and use the IPv6 address for their old Cloudflare endpoint. I pinged them to update the backend IP for it after the outage switched to a new server. Might need to do that again now.
tambre··on Cooling related failure (in Google London DC)
Why does your map have AWS's eu-north-1 in Estonia? Officially it's said to be in Stockholm and I can find no references nor know of it existing there.
tambre··on MIT researchers uncover ‘unpatchable’ flaw in Apple M1 chips
That's too short of a timeframe in the silicon world. If it's considered important we'll see something in M3, but more likely in M4.
tambre··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
Lore definitely doesn't fit, but PlanetSide 2 and Foxhole sound decently close to this.
tambre··on HP Dev One Laptop with Pop_OS
> AMD Ryzen™ 7 PRO processor

I wish someone would make a laptop that had ECC RAM along with this.

Last I looked there were only some ultra high end Xeon laptops with ECC. :(

tambre··on Home Made TPM2.0 Module
Anyone know of TPMs supporting Ed25519? I've yet to even find any such chips so far.
tambre··on Tell HN: AT&T disabled phone numbers and accounts of users using the old phones
What you're talking about is 5G mmWave. Previous longer frequencies remain usable with 5G. Last I looked into it mmWave was a tiny portion of 5G deployments, as it only makes in very dense urban areas due to the reasons you noted. Of course those mmWave stations presumably still support the longer frequencies because why wouldn't you if the goal is to fit tons of clients onto one station.
tambre··on The wild world of non-C operating systems
> both libstd++ & libcxx strive to maintain ABI compatibility

They don't, but they do keep it stable.

tambre··on A high speed processor for elliptic curve cryptography over NIST prime field
I'm still waiting for a TPM that would support Ed25519. Unfortunately I haven't found any yet.
tambre··on Ask HN: Should I accept the free Windows 11 upgrade?
Wasn't aware, that's great. I'd assumed 21H2 would be the last and had already begun shifting new installs to Win 11.
