tailspin2019··on Exit Strategy: The Case for Single-Stair Egress
Respectfully, I disagree that the definition of "Europe" depends.

The UK is in Europe.

The fact that we know what they mean by saying the UK is no longer in Europe does not make that statement any more correct.

I often see comments from people outside of Europe who think that the UK "left Europe" (not realising the distinction between Europe and the EU). I don't blame them, but I think it's worth pointing out.

tailspin2019··on Deactivating Facebook for just a few weeks reduces belief in fake news
I’ve deactivated Facebook for about 15 years. Hopefully my belief in fake news is correspondingly low.

It’s tough though; for all the bullshit that comes at you through these social networks, there is a lot of genuine personal connection too.

Having shunned most social networking for double digit years I do feel “cleaner” for not having to wade through all the crap, probably comparatively less anxious about the world in general, but also undoubtedly more isolated too.

No easy answer…

Does anyone with a paid plan see anything different in the ChatGPT iOS app yet?

Mine just continues to show “GPT 4” as the model - it’s not clear if that’s now 4o or there is an app update coming…

tailspin2019··on GPT-4o
Regarding the limits, I recently found that I was hitting limits very quickly on GPT-4 on my ChatGPT Plus plan.

I’m pretty sure that wasn’t always the case - it feels like somewhere along the lines the allowed usage was reduced, unless I’m imagining it. It wouldn’t be such a big deal if there was more visibility of my current usage compared to my total “allowance”.

I ended up upgrading to ChatGPT Team which has a minimum of 2x users (I now use both accounts) but I resented having to do this - especially being forced to pay for two users just to meet their arbitrary minimum.

I feel like I should not be hitting limits on the ChatGPT Plus paid plan at all based on my usage patterns.

I haven’t hit any limits on the Team plan yet.

I hope they continue to improve the paid plans and become a bit more transparent about usage limits/caps. I really do not mind paying for this (incredible) tech, but the way it’s being sold currently is not quite right and feels like paid users get a bit of a raw deal in some cases.

I have API access but just haven’t found an open source client that I like using as much as the native ChatGPT apps yet.

tailspin2019··on Ask HN: What nonfiction books do you keep rereading?
I share your taste in books. 7 Habits in particular absolutely changed my life. I’ve always thought that its title doesn’t really do it justice. There is a lot more depth to that book than you’d think based on the title alone. It has helped set my moral compass.

Lean startup is a recent discovery for me - and boy do I wish I’d read it sooner!

Edit: also I highly recommend Stephen Covey’s audiobooks of 7 Habits and First Things First (read by him)

tailspin2019··on Arc Browser for Windows, now generally available
It’s the principle of the mandatory account which really bugs me, more than the technical logistics of it.

Not only does it seem unnecessary to require this even just for curious new users to quickly try it out, but it sends me a strong signal about their priorities and tells me that they probably don’t align with mine.

OP, please do not be discouraged by the pessimism in some of these comments. I don't think they are representative of your target audience for this app.

Those who know how much had work it takes to build and launch a product like this - especially such a nice looking one, appreciate your work!

tailspin2019··on Show HN: Brewer X, a native macOS client for Homebrew
Pricing comments aside, this looks very nicely designed and executed.
tailspin2019··on Show HN: Brewer X, a native macOS client for Homebrew
That’s quite a common pricing model isn’t it?

You get a perpetual licence with an option for continuing to get updates after the first year.

If it was a monthly subscription there would be lots of complaints too.

Maybe it is a bit expensive but I do think we should reserve the word “scam” for actual scams :) The pricing is at least extremely clear, even if you don’t agree with it.

I agree a trial would be nice. I wouldn’t buy this without being able to try it.

The casual and baseless character assassination in these comments is pretty infuriating.

Also “glass roofs” isn’t a thing.

That’s a very interesting read. Surprised I haven’t heard about this before today.
tailspin2019··on MKBHDs for Everything
You’ve made a leap that I am somehow making a comment on the accuracy of his review.

I have no idea about Humane’s product or whether MKBHD’s review is accurate.

I’m simply making the point that “The worst product I’ve reviewed… For Now” is a bit clickbaity.

Ie it is specifically worded in a way that encourages clicks.

tailspin2019··on MKBHDs for Everything
You could apply that exact same argument to MKBHD’s slightly clickbait title of his video.

> thus drawing more eyeballs to his $400 "I will teach you how to be a successful entrepreneur" course on X (because of course he has one).

Just a voice in support of Daniel here as this is a bit of a mischaracterisation.

He’s a really nice, gentle guy, who runs a small online community called Small Bets which I would characterise as the opposite of a “I will teach you to be rich” course. (I’m a satisfied paid member).

I don’t have an opinion on his tweet but both he and MKBHD are equally entitled to share their (strong) opinions on things.

tailspin2019··on Show HN: CompressX, my FFmpeg wrapper for macOS
I think it’s partly down to the Mac’s long history of being favoured by creative types… especially designers.

And some developers are either pretty good UI designers too (it happens) or at the very least they have good taste for design. If you’re one of those people, it’s hard not to gravitate towards the Mac.

That and Apple care a lot about design too so as others have said, the platform is kind of setup for guiding you (mostly) towards making good decisions in that area.

tailspin2019··on Show HN: CompressX, my FFmpeg wrapper for macOS
This is a brilliant summary. I mean… less of the goat bashing… but otherwise you summed it up pretty nicely.
tailspin2019··on Proton and Standard Notes are joining forces
> Proton is backed by subscribers rather than VC investors,

So I really hope you listen to us, the subscribers, and try to keep focus on improving the products that you have already launched and that we are paying for, before getting distracted on other projects.

Honestly the basic features that are still missing from Calendar are becoming a bit embarrassing. It's also embarrassing for me with my business clients when my calendar system is the only one that doesn't seem to function like a normal calendar does - and they see that too.

You've done an amazing job with product development so far - especially Email - but please don't squander that. Some of your products really really need basic missing features and bugs sorted - and quickly, because you've already sold them to customers. I get the sense that your customers are unusually loyal (which is to your credit) but goodwill won't last forever.

tailspin2019··on Proton and Standard Notes are joining forces
> doesn't mean it's abandoned or unsupported

I didn't use those words though. I just stated that I have switched to a competing product which is more feature complete.

> Proton Drive for Mac was last updated March 29th.

I switched back to Tresorit due to the lack of comparable features on the Mac app too. And Tresorit is not exactly packed with features.

We can debate dates and details but there is a reason why the comment you originally responded to is the top voted comment for this article.

Do you work for Proton?

tailspin2019··on Proton and Standard Notes are joining forces
> iOS it's in beta

And was last updated 9 months ago. I'm still paying for it but have had to switch back to using Tresorit while I wait for them to update it.

tailspin2019··on Proton and Standard Notes are joining forces
Completely agree. I'm a longstanding paying customer and general supporter of Proton and it has been very clear for a long time that their attention is being spread too thin.

The more recently launched products are not really feature complete in many ways and some go months without updates.

Email is great, I'd still highly recommend it. But I wish they would restrict their WIP and focus on fewer things (for their own sake).

Edit: to balance out my negativity a bit - I REALLY recommend Proton for email, to home users and business users alike. It's rock solid and the iOS app is extremely good too. It's also very clear to me that the Proton team work extremely hard, and listen to feedback. But my concerns about a perceived lack of focus still stand!

tailspin2019··on OpenAI: Start using ChatGPT instantly
> We may use what you provide to ChatGPT to improve our models for everyone. If you’d like, you can turn this off through your Settings - whether you create an account or not.

A quick moan about this:

As a long-time paying subscriber of ChatGPT (and their API), I am extremely frustrated that the "Chat history & training" toggle still bundles together those two unrelated concepts. In order for me to not have my data used, I have to cripple the product (the one I'm paying for) for myself.

It's great that they're making the product available to more people without an account but I really wish they would remove this dark pattern for those of us who are actually paying them.

tailspin2019··on Headline Driven Development
As someone currently working hard on a simple MVP for my own SaaS product, this is good advice for me.

When you’re building your own thing it’s easy to get carried away and spend too much time on increasingly granular details and endless scope creep. It’s not easy to keep it lean and actually get your product launched and in front of customers quickly.

The article’s approach - which should probably not be taken too literally in some cases - gets you to keep the end goal in mind. And the end goal of software development is almost always a business goal and not a technical one. Something else that’s often easy to lose sight of as a developer.
