taf2··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
Traveling with family it’s been nice to use the WhatsApp but it’s ui is and the onboarding was so bad - took about 10 tries to get it working … I’m amazed how many people use it… but pretty hard to compete with 0 cost service…
taf2··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
I’d also add that because the carriers SMS is so terrible it was easy for Apple…
taf2··on Ask HN: How do you optimize your focus?
I say no and listen to Hans Zimmerman music
taf2··on Boeing whistleblower found dead in US
Or killed by a nation state that thrives on creating conflict by amplifying two sided situations that lead to increased polarization and more instability… the problem with speculation is it’s just that speculation… I’m going to wait and see
taf2··on Both pilots of an A320 fell asleep in the cockpit for 28 minutes
I did delivers up and down the Atlantic in 2000s I remember it being awesome. Granted I was 20 and like the time we got too close to a us aircraft carrier and they launched a helicopter that did a fly over to check us out that was pretty great. We also always had lines out to catch fish and let me tell you when that line caught something didn’t matter if it was your shift or not it was “fish on” everyone jumping out of their bunks to help. Best fish tacos ever. I do remember the captain could be pass out drunk and still dock the 70 footer without issue and then stumble below to pass out. But yeah we slept a lot too but underway maybe 6-7 so plenty of time to fix or react big difference from an airplane or even autopilot car
taf2··on Updating Chrome gets extensions to break (v. 122)
Most likely it’s all the privacy changes . Try disabling some of the chrome://flags - they broke BroadcastChannel and many other features in 121, so I wouldn’t be surprised if your issue is more breaking changes in 122… the really shitty thing IMO is because of auto update they now can at a anytime break business applications without any regard to the financial impact.
taf2··on Streaming HTML out of order without JavaScript
That was like what ESI (Edge Side Includes) allowed from Akamai. Perhaps had the founder[1] of Akamai not been killed in the world trade towers we'd have had that in the standard...

taf2··on Mistral Large
I got the same thing. I got it to elaborate and as I asked it how it could be trained on GPT-3 when it's closed source. I asked if it got the data through the API. It insisted it was trained on conversational data, this leads me to believe they generated a bunch of conversational data using OpenAI APIs...
taf2··on Why Tesla's Stainless Steel Cybertrucks May Be Rusting
Seems like a good time to share https://youtu.be/qFXWjv65JWg?si=zI7TuqZRLomXFlhq

sacrificial anode

For the truck might be really easy to attach and not such a bad idea

taf2··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
Big idea but maybe they should have just named it Google
taf2··on US government opens 22M acres of federal lands to solar
Leaving in Maryland when I drive to the eastern shore and see farm lands cover in solar panels I am some what upset by this… would it not make better sense to just reduce the cost or in some way incentivize roof top solar for commercial buildings? Flying into dca I see hundreds of huge warehouses with flat roofs and just think they would be perfect for solar… but farm lands… if they aren’t needed for food then restore them to forests?
taf2··on System76 Thelio Major Powered by AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series Performance
It comes assembled? Presumably that means also it was tested and has some assurance that it works… I imagine they have some labor cost in there too
taf2··on Comparing the 1970's Cray-1 supercomputer against the Raspberry Pi
I’m pretty sure it was here that I read how cray would drive on a family trip and insist the kids stay silent while he drove and designed much the cray in his head on the drive… if anyone has a link would love to re read that story
taf2··on Queues don't fix overload (2014)
Been doing a lot of work on electronics and I think Queue's are very similar in a system to capacitors. They smooth out load either by buffering new work/load or holding onto pending work/load...
taf2··on Shoelace: A library of web components
It’s an 8 year old phone … iPhone 6s was released September 2015…
taf2··on Jeff Lawson steps down as CEO of Twilio
Wish it was a T-Mobile purchase instead :/
taf2··on Jeff Lawson steps down as CEO of Twilio
The blocking was 100% not Twilio’s fault it was 100% bad actors and pressure from congress. Also we have three major carriers now in the US they needed to act fast in August since congress was going to go back I session in September to force this. So the carriers wanted to be able to say to congress see we are already taking care of the spam issue … see https://www.campaignregistry.com/. The single monopoly in charge of the regulations
taf2··on Show HN: Bring phone calls into the browser (SIP-to-WebRTC)
Any pointers to make that happen using kamailio?
taf2··on Browsers are the most likely disruptor of the mobile duopoly
SharedWorkers too
taf2··on Git Things
I really like:

[diff] colormoved = "default" colormovedws = "allow-indentation-change"

That is great for understanding the actual code changes wish it was on by default.

taf2··on Ruby 3.3's YJIT: Faster While Using Less Memory
Sorry to hear you had that experience we saw 30% speedup moving from 2.6 to 3.2 and the 95th in many cases was 40%... Did you happen to enable yjit and if so which app server are you running?
taf2··on OnnxStream: Stable Diffusion XL 1.0 Base on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2
So it’s safe to assume in the next 10 years - AI will be running locally on every device from phones, laptops and even many embedded devices. Even robots- from street cleaning bots to helpful human assistants?
taf2··on OnnxStream: Stable Diffusion XL 1.0 Base on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2
Output to epaper
taf2··on Firefox on the brink?
I can't be alone in my view that open source won. Just not the original Mozilla open source browser. Instead the re-invented one spear headed by Google - Chrome. Chrome is like the 2.0 of everything the IE6 team and Mozilla team learned the hard way. It was built by many of the original founding members of those teams. It's not a bad thing when Microsoft now uses the open source Blink rendering engine. It's not a bad thing that Apple uses the open source Webkit engine. My feeling is "we won". The web is so much better today thanks in part to the amazing teams that came together sponsored by Google to build Chrome. Time marches forward and there are plenty of interesting problems to overcome for the web as a platform. I just think we can move on from M$ bad, Mozilla good... Mozilla showed us we could have a better browser and helped break the web free from the shackles of Microsoft. There's new problems to solve new fights to win just this one, is IMO, over.
taf2··on Tesla: Security Vulnerabilities
I’m definitely a Tesla fan.. considering a cyber truck but one concern I have which I think is similar to what your saying is I’m worried because it’s been demonstrated as bullet proof what if someone I drive by decides to test it out ?
taf2··on Extracting training data from ChatGPT
Interesting you can crash the new preview models by asking them to reduce a very large array of words into common smaller set of topics and providing the output as JSON object with the parent topic and each of its sub topics in an array… gpt-4 preview will just start repeating one of the sub topics forever or timeout
taf2··on Yi-34B-Chat
Yeah we tried Claude 2 to summarize multiple conversations and if we give it the instructions at the start and then show it the conversations it almost always forgot the original instruction and ends up outputting something related to the conversation so long context whole nice seem to break down very quickly. What I found worked better was to provide the instructions at the end but given the in ability to follow the starting instructions my guess is much of the early conversations are lost… so yeah not so sure big context is a silver bullet
taf2··on Naev – open-source game about space exploration, trade and combat
When I retire I want to start a foundation to create free to play open source video games. Initially I was thinking we’d focus it on mobile games for little ones since so many of those games are designed to extract as much money for parents suffering through dinner etc… but this game looks like a cool target also
taf2··on YouTube is now blocking ad blockers so I make ads run faster
So silly to blocks ads on YouTube . IMO YouTube has an excellent - paid ad free experience that financially makes sense both for me and content creators. Blocking ads on YouTube just seems evil …
taf2··on After OpenAI's blowup, it seems pretty clear that 'AI safety' isn't a real thing
IMO yes, but more likely and entirely different yet to be discovered way of modeling intelligence
