tacticus··on People kept working, became healthier while on basic income: report (2020)
> Technology gives us massive gains in productivity; we could reasonably reduce working hours to <20/week in the developed world. We might have less business dynamic analysts or scrum masters or social media coordinators. We'll be fine.

> beyond this, we shall endeavour to spread the bread thin on the butter-to make what work there is still to be done to be as widely shared as possible. Three-hour shifts or a fifteen-hour week may put off the problem for a great while. For three hours a day is quite enough to satisfy the old Adam in most of us!

Unfortunately the governments and the wealthy looked at Hayek and decided they much preferred the idea where they could continue to abuse the workers.

tacticus··on Next month, saved passwords will no longer be in Microsoft’s Authenticator app
That would require all the microsoft auth platforms to allow you to use yubikeys or similar instead of default forcing you in to ms authenticator only
tacticus··on The "personal computer" model scales better than the "terminal" model
One aspect missed with why VDI style solutions have become popular is that they do reduce some security overheads (kinda in some ways) while making the vendors happy with the additional licenses everyone needs
tacticus··on Australians to face age checks from search engines
> That said, a better approach would be to limit kids under certain age from owning smartphones with full internet access. Instead, they could have a phone without internet access—dumb phones—or ones with curated/limited access.

This wouldn't allow them to watch gambling ads or enjoy murdoch venues.

tacticus··on The time is right for a DOM templating API
Was react ever about progress?
tacticus··on 2025 Iberia Blackout Report [pdf]
> assuming all generators are running at 100%.

which they won't ever be given the habits of coal plants to suffer outages whenever it's convenient to pump the price up.

tacticus··on My quest to make motorcycle riding that tad bit safer
Australia where there's no enforcement of that engineering signoff if it's done after the initial sale.

or where ADR non compliant vehicles are fine because they're imported under the low volume\non manufacturer paths. (there's more than a few tosser owned gmc denali with lifts that bring the bonnet up to 1.7ish metres)

tacticus··on The Difference Between Municipal Fire Trucks and Airport Fire Trucks
Proportionally they're fine when you look at window and door sizes. They're just short wheelbase 4/8 tonne trucks with a dual cab. You see them fairly often here in .au driven by tradies who actually understand what they need to use for work and entertainingly smaller, easier to park, and have a cargo capacity larger than the shitty utes that all the accountants drive
tacticus··on Apple ordered by EU antitrust regulators to open up to rivals
> they can't create APIs that enable those things and not allow third parties to invoke them.

Entertainingly the same reason microsoft didn't lock down the kernel interfaces that lead to crowdstriking everything. MS wanted to be the only security product in the kernel.

tacticus··on Apple ordered by EU antitrust regulators to open up to rivals
> If you get big enough, they swoop in and make you turn everything you've invented into an open standard?

well they could force them to split up like the US did for standard oil and bell. but the US doesn't do that any more cause they've been bought out.

I mean headphones is obviously using control of one market to impact another segment for control.

tacticus··on Breaking Up with On-Call
IMO it's when the incident response and readiness practice imposes a direct backpressure on feature delivery that you get the issues actually fixed and a resilient system.

if it's just the engineer while product and management see no real cost then people burn out and leave.

> The most successful teams I've seen treat on-call like a leading indicator - every incident represents unpriced technical debt that should be systematically eliminated. Each alert becomes an investment opportunity rather than a burden to be rotated.

100%

tacticus··on A 10x Faster TypeScript
The c# benchmarks where they didn't use the framework to do any of the actual templating?

those hardcoded byte arrays are how everyone does templating everywhere right?

or are you talking about after they changed back their "platform" test to not do that and is substantially slower than go

tacticus··on Jeff Bezos' revamp of 'Washington Post' opinions leads editor to quit
partly because of astroturfing about "benevolent" monopolies that was pushed on to judges and politicians
tacticus··on AWS paywalling select knowledge base articles, requiring Premium Support plan
yeah but it takes years for that to happen so all the stock bonuses vest fine.
tacticus··on Why does Mill use Scala?
shouting at pip inconsistencies
tacticus··on More than 40% of postdocs leave academia, study reveals
i kinda read the "training" position as someone providing training to others. for which postdocs are very much underpaid and abused by the unis.
tacticus··on No Calls
> I think we can assume a fairly normal distribution

Sturgeons law applies more to enterprise software and products than any other space

"ninety percent of everything is crap" is just insufficient in describing how bad the solutions in this space are.

tacticus··on US will ban cancer-linked Red Dye No. 3 in cereal and other foods
> family business

In the organised crime meaning of the word family

tacticus··on 43K fewer drivers on Manhattan roads after congestion pricing turned on
> It can be an easier and more politically popular idea to just use streets to solve this problem at the individual level even if less efficient rather than requiring efficient central management planning by the government.

So how many 40 lane roads are you going to build instead of single train lines?

tacticus··on Snyk security researcher deploys malicious NPM packages targeting cursor.com
This is the practice in many government sites these days.

Except the vm is some old windows version without any tools on it. no shell access.

can't actually do anything useful on there at all.

VDI systems could work if implemented properly. but that's the last thing a security team actually wants to do.

tacticus··on Show HN: Python with do..end in place of strict indentation
you can solve that with a formatter. and then you'd get consistent outputs that work reliably as you move code.
tacticus··on Nvidia's Project Digits is a 'personal AI supercomputer'
they don't miss that part. they just want to be the evil character.
tacticus··on Pat Gelsinger was wrong for Intel
Microsoft has a worse case of the same problem but greater monopoly force. Entirely dependent on the captive markets but rapidly snatching up everything they can to enforce it on other markets.
tacticus··on Intel announces Arc B-series "Battlemage" discrete graphics with Linux support
comparing the bottom of the market cards with a card that is 4+ times the power budget and 6 times the price is um....
tacticus··on Intel announces Arc B-series "Battlemage" discrete graphics with Linux support
that's kinda what camm2 is all about. The new interface methods provide a much better link and improve a bunch of stuff but take up more board space.
tacticus··on Intel announces Arc B-series "Battlemage" discrete graphics with Linux support
the 4060 is an "excellent" nvidia product where they managed to release something slower than the cheaper previous gen 3060
tacticus··on The Curse of Markdown
You're not learning html when you write react horror shows either.

it's a space that broke <A /> because they're too useful and needed a broken react special version.

tacticus··on Proposed amendment to legal presumption about the reliability of computers
> The punishment we have for this is unemployability and bankruptcy. It will happen by itself if you let it.

yeah, nah.

"No one ever got fired for buying IBM"

after decades of incompetence the multinational contracting firms are still going fine. IBM still runs fine and they're focus is now even more in the insulting side of the business.

tacticus··on AMD Disables Zen 4's Loop Buffer
and given the size of the variance it's probably too small to easily pick up from external atx\eps12v monitoring solutions :\
tacticus··on Bluesky's open API means anyone can scrape your data for AI training
HF wouldn't exist if it was an ethical company.
