tacLog··on CyberChef – The Cyber Swiss Army Knife
I really apricated the honestly about the pros and cons of each.
tacLog··on Open Railway Map
Yeah, I can get the map to load fine, but the overlay of the railway data loads in really slowly and doesn't load a bunch of chunks at all.
tacLog··on Open Railway Map
Does anyone have reference enough to say if this is the normal performance or if the site is getting hugged by hacker news?

It's taking 5-10 minutes to load US state wide views fully, with parts not loading in at all.

I have a good connection on my end and was just wondering if I should check back later or if this is more a slow mapping service.

tacLog··on UK’s largest flow battery energised
I think they covered this question pretty well here:

> Invinity’s vanadium flow batteries are used to ‘front-end’ the energy asset, acting as a first line of response when the system is called into service; only after the required response exceeds the capacity of the Invinity battery does the lithium-ion battery get called into service. Since Invinity’s flow battery does not degrade with use and can cycle indefinitely, it performs much of the ‘heavy-lifting’ required from the system while reducing wear on the lithium-ion battery.

What I think this means, is the the 5Mhw of flow batter covers demand spikes and the 50Mhw allows for larger longer draws during off peak renewable times.

I am just an enthusiastic auteur in this field and could be very wrong.

tacLog··on Proposed Bill to Outlaw Bots from Scalping Online Goods [pdf]
Thanks for the recommendation. That appears to be somewhat close to what I was hoping to find. I will check it out.
tacLog··on Proposed Bill to Outlaw Bots from Scalping Online Goods [pdf]
I can't tell if your joking or not, but wouldn't summarization at that level require some pretty insane AI? The closest I have seen is pretty decent and runs on some of the reddit news subreddits.

But it is far from the work of a person skilled in real summarization, because real summarization requires you to predict what I care about based on the world at large.

tacLog··on Proposed Bill to Outlaw Bots from Scalping Online Goods [pdf]
I think there is still a point. Lets think about this from a scalpers perspective.

I want to make as much money as possible. I know there will always be a market for products people can't get on the traditional market. I can clearly identify these ahead of time and spend thousands buying them.

If when I use automated bots to buy, my products then become illegal's aka 'slightly harder' to sell. That might reduce my income.

If I then have to employ people to click the same buttons as normal people click using the same software normal people use, and not circumventing order limits or 1 per person rules. That means I can't get products as easily or cheaply and reduces my profit.

I see two solutions to scalpers. Incentivize or require a demand based market. So that prices shoot way up on their own. (bad for many reasons) or cut into profit margins and restrict overall volume of the people that will create that demand based market legally or illegibly.

Side thought after reading this. Is there anyway to currently get a feed of high quality summarizations of laws passed by each congress? By that I mean, as a voting citizen I want to watch what congresses law/executive orders do. I don't want to read the laws, or how they work, or any of the details.

I want the why, high level what does this change, and high level what was the opposition to this.

I feel like one of the things that we struggle with is 'uninformed voters' in a modern democracy. I try to stay informed but I need to cut off my time somewhere. Are there any ways for me to stay lightly informed with low effort on my part?

tacLog··on FBI's ability to legally access secure messaging app content and metadata [pdf]
My family has really taken to it. Granted it's mostly just message family app to them, but they are very not technically fluent but yet seemed to have picked it up just fine. I really think this is not discussed when hacker news brings up secure messaging. The user experience is so much more important than the underlying tech. My family doesn't care about end to end encryption. They care about video calling with the press of a button, and easy features that are just there and work like zoom or the many other software products that they have to use work.

Thank you Signal team for focusing so hard on the user experience.

tacLog··on Banks, gangsters and the strange resurgence of cash
I am having trouble finding the 'let them' part. I see plenty of allegations. I just wanted to find out when the US was 'off the books aiding' North Korea.
tacLog··on Banks, gangsters and the strange resurgence of cash
I think he is talking about the reletively high number of people that buy and sell gold for cash as private parity sales. Generally, I have been gold authenticated by taking the density with a good scale and water displacement. Though that technically could be faked it would be very hard. If you wanted to do it quickly you could probably cut a corner off because the stuff in circulation is normally high enough grade that it's almost soft. Gold Plated lead would feel off to anyone that's handled gold before from density alone. Gold is nearly twice as dense. That's why it made a great coin in the past. It's far denser than anyother common materials.
tacLog··on Oculus will allow sideloading and rooting to avoid e-waste
I have never heard of this before do you have any sources or data points? From a quick google it seems to be a warning that Sony is at least putting on their VR offering.

This source says otherwise: "ophthalmologists agree there is no reason to be concerned that VR headsets will damage eye development, health or function." https://www.aao.org/eye-health/tips-prevention/are-virtual-r...

It seems like there is just a lack of data regarding the impact of VR usage on eye development and as a result people are being rightful cautious.

tacLog··on NYC major crime complaints fell when cops took a break from ‘proactive policing’
I completely agree and you could prove it with a study.

You would just have to answer for what percentage of those call did the responding parties (dispatch, the officer responding and the person calling it in) thought there was a need for armed police.

I am willing to be that while only 5% turn out to need armed police, most of those 5% where uncertain, and a % far greater than that where armed police weren't needed, where very uncertain.

It's just not possible to predict when you need to be armed.

However, if you go down this line it is also not possible to predict when having a gun on your hip is going to make it more difficult to resolve the issue.

There is a tradeoff here that is very hard to make policy around. Something that is being tried is for there to be unarmed medical oriented mental health response units available for calls that don't seem uncertain. I think the data coming out of these changes will change the way big cities operate their departments one day.

tacLog··on OnlyFans drops planned porn ban
> A friend who torrents these things just checked for me and saw well over a 100,000 'snatches' for that Avengers flick on just one private torrent tracker.

This makes far more sense, I wonder why their numbers are so bad.

tacLog··on OnlyFans drops planned porn ban
By services you mean, Netflix, Hulu and similar right? Not plex, or the various illegal streaming sites?
tacLog··on OnlyFans drops planned porn ban
I didn't think of this at all. This throws the tenuous conclusions I was drawing completely out the window.
tacLog··on Bashly – Create beautiful bash scripts from simple YAML configuration
I really liked it because it drew my attention when I might have skipped over a block of text.

However, I wanted to go back and see what was earlier or view the source input and output. So I would also like it if the contents of the gif was printed out below for easier access.

tacLog··on OnlyFans drops planned porn ban
I found this site from the torrentfreak link below and thought it was pretty cool.

https://iknowwhatyoudownload.com/en/stat/annual/2021 If you flip thru the years at least the top movies in 2018 have more downloads than the top movies in 2021. I think that can somewhat safely answer your questions.

EDIT: WRONG because as a comment points out below older movies also might just have been downloaded more over time.

From this site, it doesn't look like their was much of an uptick in top downloaded movies from 2019 to 2020. And in general torrenting has been growing less popular.

However, the numbers on this site in general don't sanity check very well for me. For example, the End Game Avengers movie, which was incredibly popular, was only downloaded: 2,890 times in 2019? That doesn't seem high enough to me.

tacLog··on Ask HN: My country may be in the midst of a coup – how should I get prepared?
What are you implying is this persons part for the future of their country?
tacLog··on The unreasonable effectiveness of just showing up everyday
I agree, he barely talked about his startup at all.

The focus was on the habit that has nothing to do with the fact that he did well.

tacLog··on Of 55 students in my class at Columbia’s Film program, 4 made a career out of it
How do people feel about making this a regulatory requirement for your students receiving federal aid?

Track how many people graduate: - Go into a career in their field - Continue on to a different field of their own choosing - Never use their degree.

This information would align the goals of students with the goals of institutions a little bit better.

I know that it would be hard to track, but that kind of program feedback would have guided my choices more than graduation statistics.

tacLog··on Sub-zero water splitting marks a new dawn for solar hydrogen production
Do you have more details on this somewhere? Maybe a nice semi-technical writeup?
tacLog··on The humble water heater could be the savior of our energy infrastructure woes
Thank you, I was not aware that natural gas generation was so inefficient.

I wonder how from a pure greenhouse gasses perspective, the numbers stack up. I know that leaked methane is much worse than CO2. 28x according to [1]

This source [2] says that the grid looses: 2% - 5% of gas between provider and consumer.

Even assuming that your grid is 90% just gas plants stil.

30% loss at the power plant, 5% loss from electrical grid. So for every unit of water heated you are wasting 35% of the energy.

Vs say 2% loss in the natural gas grid. but that 2% is 28x worse than burned CO2.

Am I completely wrong in saying that from a pure this hurts the planet more electric based water heaters often probably still win?

tacLog··on US companies hit by 'colossal' cyber-attack
I have never been called a coin head before. It feels interesting, because on one hand I see what people are trying to accomplish with crypto, but generally I am against the current solutions because of the massive climate impact of proof of work algorithms.

Judge me how you will, however, I do think I see your point that crypto might be contributing to this new form of extorsion. I was only trying to get more detail. Which has now been provided.

tacLog··on Sub-zero water splitting marks a new dawn for solar hydrogen production
Paywall free link: https://web.archive.org/web/20210708014033/https://www.chemi...

First off this seems like a really important addition to solar in general. My impression is that hydrogen is easy to make, can be a closed water cycle (uses the same water it generates to when release the energy), and the only downside is the inefficacies of compressing it to store it among the other steps.

Does anyone know if this would be a practical source of heat say at night, considering what I understood to be Hydrogens lower energy density?

For example, I was wondering roughly how big of a tank of (I am assuming) liquid hydrogen would be required to match say 50 a gallon tank of diesel.

Or am I missing something here?

tacLog··on The humble water heater could be the savior of our energy infrastructure woes
Is it though? It might be cheaper in many area's but this source [1] says that the grid transmission loss is only 5%. Am I missing something that makes it a more substantial difference?

Not to mention that piping all that natural gas out to each home has to result in a certain amount of leakage and energy cost in just the pumping itself.

tacLog··on US companies hit by 'colossal' cyber-attack
I feel like this is a bold claim. I understand this to mean that you assume without crypto there would be less of a way to get payed for attacks like these?

Or am I missing something here. Also, Do you have an evidence to support the argument: Crypto has increased cyber crime? (I hope that is an acceptable parse of your sentiment)

tacLog··on Brickit – scans your Lego bricks and helps you build new creations
I am really curious about the data labelling. Do you mean that you took photos of piles of Legos and labeled them by hand. Or individual Legos from different angles?

Also you mentioned data synthesis. How would this be possible? Unless your suggesting that you rendered photo realistic piles of Legos and used trained on them because if that is the case, please do a write up of the project. I can't imagine more interesting way to generate training data.

tacLog··on Media blackout after key witness against Assange admits lying
I am interested in hearing more about about how "Bernie was a carpetbagger" if you don't mind. I really liked him, but I do also see how he was a thread to the Democrats winning in both 2016, and 2020. So I have mixed feeling about what the DNC did.

I have no idea what you mean you when you say carpetbagger and am legitimately curious to hear your perspective.
