sysadmindotfail··on iPhone 12 Pro so costly in India, you can fly to Dubai to buy it and save money
Many stores in Orlando, Florida cater to just these middle-upper class Brazilians who takes these trips. In fact, it is not uncommon to speak/respond/switch between English/Spanish/Portguese in shopping malls.
sysadmindotfail··on It used to be simpler to teach Unix
Believe it or not, places like this still exist. I worked at one (eerily similar story), then moved to a much larger company with even more platforms at one site. It was pretty silly.
sysadmindotfail··on That UPS you bought for your home server may not be as useful as you think
My power goes out all the time in Denver. In the summer, with no adverse weather. The grid here is a joke compared to most of Florida which is FAR more resilient.
sysadmindotfail··on Moved a server from one building to another with zero downtime
The procedure was done to meet an audit, less about hours and more about mitigating a mistake (I guess).

>About 13-14 years ago some parts of the US DoD resorted to hot glue gun filling all the usb ports on desktop PCs, except for the two ports required for the keyboard and mouse.

Here's a current story:

Someone ordered the wrong desk phones at your large company?

1.) Assemble your crew. Go to various departments and recruit non-technical people.

2.) Task them with disassembling 1000 desk phones.

3.) Hot glue USB port on phone shut.

4.) Reassemble 1000 desk phones.

sysadmindotfail··on Independence, autonomy, and too many small teams
In the US these are called 'slice pies' which are enormous and not meant (usually) to be ordered whole.
sysadmindotfail··on Rite Aid deployed facial recognition systems in hundreds of U.S. stores
Every time the item has a digital coupon advertised price I simply inform the cashier I don't a phone with me. They discount it immediately.
sysadmindotfail··on Walmart employees are out to show its anti-shoplifting AI doesn’t work
IMHO this is smart. They're training ML models using this data (and it feels intrusive to me) and one might assume this is higher quality than the cameras scattered about the store at odd angles.

Any large aerospace contractor has mandatory FOD/FOE training for ALL employees (contract stipulation). Don't forget to not charge for this time spent!
sysadmindotfail··on Amazon asks court to halt Microsoft's work on Pentagon 'war cloud'
As a former longtime contractor I totally agree. One thing often overlooked is this 'Silver Tsunami' that will wreak havoc on the old guard (existing giant contracting companies). The existing workforce is aging, the new blood is uninterested in the old ways (cruft, old tech) and frankly there's tremendous opportunity for a 'Space-X' style small contractor to get a serious foothold.

Some of these companies need to replace 40% of their workforce in the next decade. Who would a new grad choose?

sysadmindotfail··on Endurance Running Hypothesis
Although listed (but not having any references), a notable Rarámuri member is María Lorena Ramírez, who at 22 years old ran (and won) a 50k in 'traditional' clothing and sandals.

"Instead of sports clothes and running shoes, she is dressed in a skirt and a pair of sandals with soles made from recycled tire rubber."

This is described in detail in the above mentioned book, which is a very good read.

Native Floridian. I spent my youth shoeless around these ponds, catching and releasing gators, snakes, and fish. I find those experiences growing up invaluable.

One man's trash is another man's treasure.

sysadmindotfail··on Managing SELinux with Puppet
One compromise to consider is using the unconfined domain (unconfined_t) to offer a more flexible arrangement. Of course this won't help you in a compliance situation (like PCI/RMF/NIST) but it's worth considering.
