synu··on Hacker News Parody Thread (2013)
Missing -

1. I noticed a word used slightly incorrectly in the title. Rather than reading it with the clear intended meaning, let’s take it as literally as possible to build a suitable straw man.

2. Someone replying in every thread, debating everyone like it’s their job and accounting for half the replies in the topic.

synu··on How friendships change in adulthood
I’m 40 and in the same boat but also moved overseas and travel a lot. I think that kind of forces you into not losing the ability to make new friends through your life.
synu··on Show HN: Get answers for shell commands from GPT3 from your terminal
I always have to share this video on threads like these: https://youtu.be/kdMG40wUCm4. Maybe you’ve seen it - interview with a senior Java developer in 2022.
synu··on Show HN: Get answers for shell commands from GPT3 from your terminal
Perhaps the next most important feature of AI will be the ability to ask follow up / clarifying questions.
synu··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
Even if that’s true (I just don’t know) the cost alone of servicing the company debt is now greater than the cost of paying all those people to sit around and do nothing, and anyway the problems with Twitter aren’t ones that are fixed by engineering.
synu··on The Bucks can’t wear cream uniforms because they interfere with digital ads
If you're curious there are other threads in this topic where people are discussing different (existing) tools for removing sponsors from YouTube videos or podcasts, and using ML to remove digitally inserted ads, for example. I like to stay up on this kind of ad-blocking tech and remove ads from content I like as completely as possible.

Maybe I'm a unicorn here (it would be surprising to me given the number of people working on ad-blocking tech, but who knows) but I truly, sincerely do simultaneously like ad-supported content and do not like the ads, and am happy to pay creators directly through subscriptions and use technology to otherwise get rid of them.

synu··on The good delusion: has effective altruism broken bad?
If some of you have to die in order to generate a significant charitable outcome, then that’s a price I’m willing to pay. /s
synu··on Ask HN: Alternative ways to make money with coding and system skills?
I haven’t had much luck working with non-profits personally. It attracts people who build petty kingdoms, like any organisation, but there’s no mediating factor of needing to get results to temper it. It can all become quite arbitrary and toxic very quickly.
synu··on The Bucks can’t wear cream uniforms because they interfere with digital ads
I’m not sure. I pay for YouTube Premium because I watch a lot of content there and hate ads. Presumably, they added that option because there are people who exist who don’t like ads and are willing to support a different model. I even had a paid NHL subscription where commercials didn’t run.

The fact that we are even able to have this very conversation to discuss the pros and cons of ad-supported models seems to point to the fact that someone can like an ad-supported business’ services while not liking ads, and it is not a ridiculous or nonsensical position to hold.

Anyway, it seems we’ve diverged quite a lot from whether or not you can be a fan of watching tv sports and also not like ads.

synu··on The Bucks can’t wear cream uniforms because they interfere with digital ads
I would understand someone saying they are an NBA fan to mean they are a fan of watching their favorite teams compete in the NBA, not that they are fans of the NBA corporate structure, business model, and/or management team, or that they like every attribute and action of the NBA without hesitation.
synu··on The Velveteen Rabbit was always more than a children’s book
Got it, thanks.
synu··on The Bucks can’t wear cream uniforms because they interfere with digital ads
I personally wouldn’t agree that the only possible reaction to anything ad-supported is to like the ads, or else you are making some kind of logical or category error. The existence of ad blockers on the internet for example seems to indicate that not only do some people quite dislike the ads, they even spend time and energy to actually do something about it.
synu··on The Bucks can’t wear cream uniforms because they interfere with digital ads
So saying something like “I like the modern internet for the most part but not the ads” would in your opinion be a similarly nonsensical statement?
synu··on The Bucks can’t wear cream uniforms because they interfere with digital ads
Would you be amazed if I told you I could connect you with someone right now who would tell you they enjoy tv sports and would like them even better without ads?
synu··on The Bucks can’t wear cream uniforms because they interfere with digital ads
“I like something except this part” is not coherent?
synu··on Meta fires a software engineer two days after he relocated from India to Canada
I am not sure where it is coming from exactly. I’ve been around for other major downturns, this is the first I recall at least where there’s almost like a “What Would Ebenezer Scrooge Do” mentality that has taken over amongst technology leaders. A lot of people I thought I respected are tweeting things like you have to put family second if you want to succeed, or people who don’t work every weekend should be fired (or even apologising to someone if you ask them to work on the weekend is a capitulation), that sort of thing. Unnecessary cruelty around layoffs, to send a message, seems like another.

I agree that work isn’t family and that it’s a business first, but recently it seems like causing or experiencing suffering is being seen as a kind of proof of commitment. I don’t think that path ends well.

synu··on The Velveteen Rabbit was always more than a children’s book
To look at an extreme example, lifetime spent under daily torture and imprisonment with a last minute redemption and freedom just before dying of old age would be a life well lived?
synu··on Sam Bankman-Fried and the geometry of conscience
The best way to drive social media engagement as a “thought leader” is pick a slightly contrarian viewpoint and then just keep doubling down forever, no matter what. People will flock to you who want external validation of whatever they wish was true, and you can build a quite successful brand.
synu··on Do not rug on me: Zero-dimensional Scam Detection
That makes sense, but would you say email then is safe? Or is it something you should watch out for scams on?

I am mainly wondering about Uniswap being described as safe.

synu··on Do not rug on me: Zero-dimensional Scam Detection
Looking at the paper abstract, it says the identified scams by looking at transactions. So it seems at least some people are manually adding them and getting scammed. Or are you saying anyone who does that is by definition using Uniswap wrong and shouldn’t be counted as being scammed on Uniswap?
synu··on Do not rug on me: Zero-dimensional Scam Detection
97% of the tokens are scams so it is safe to use? Or am I misunderstanding your point?
synu··on Why is every layoff 10-15%?
I guess I just don’t believe the leaf nodes in your example actually know who isn’t performing, but had decided to keep them on the team for reasons. And that if they are asked, they will suddenly name names with pinpoint accuracy. In my experience, in this situation, the managers are clueless and figuring out what is actually going on is a hard problem.
synu··on Why is every layoff 10-15%?
It seems to me unlikely that they both couldn’t tell who was performing in normal times and then find them with surgical precision while panicking.
synu··on ‘Dark ships’ emerge from the shadows of the Nord Stream mystery
That’s just what the Martians would like you to believe. Try doing your own research.
synu··on FTX to file for U.S. bankruptcy, CEO resigns
Only resigns? You would think he was headed to jail.
synu··on Russia to Withdraw Troops from Kherson
It has to include Ukraine joining NATO or Putin will be back.
synu··on Microneedle patch digs deep to regenerate hair in bald mice
Would people who got male pattern baldness in their early twenties just have particularly stretched heads relative to younger age?
synu··on EU electricity production by country and source
Watching the war in Ukraine, it seems like distributed local generation should be a significant part of the mix for national security reasons.
synu··on 10 years of FTL: The making of an enduring spaceship simulator
At least to me it feels a lot closer to Sedoku than Civilization.
synu··on 10 years of FTL: The making of an enduring spaceship simulator
I have never thought of KSP as a roguelike/lite, but now that I see it on the chart it actually makes a little sense. I started with Binding of Isaac so I guess I have a fairly loose definition.
