synicalx··on Microsoft begins cracking down on people dodging Windows 11 system requirements
Option 1 is arguably not an option in a lot of people's minds with the EOL date for W10 coming up, and threatening/pushy notifications from MS on all W10 machines telling people to upgrade to W11.

Option 2 is a non-starter for a lot of people - can't afford a Mac, would never be able to work out Linux. ChromeOS is an option but if you're going to buy new hardware, why not just go with option 3 and get a new Windows machine.

Option 3 is MS's favourite; they shift more unit of their own hardware, failing that they shift more licenses from OEMs, they lock more people into W11, then progressively upsell them stuff from within the OS itself, and finally make more money off of advertising from 3rd parties in the OS itself.

I'm also inclined to think that by creating a generational gap with hardware like this, MS is making their own lives easier by only having to test W11 on modern hardware - no legacy users to support. So they make more money, potentially for less effort.

synicalx··on We're Cutting L40S Prices in Half
I feel like Geforce Now has been growing quite steadily, they onboard new titles every week including some big ones like World of Warcraft recently and they've stood up streaming DC's in quite a lot of places now.
synicalx··on We're Cutting L40S Prices in Half
As someone who used to work on that platform back when it was still called PlayStation Now, no it is not. There's a few rumors and alleged leaks though.
synicalx··on Go 1.23 Released
To me, even proposing the (extremely obviously) negative state in the first place is a sign of bad faith on the part of the proposer.

If they proposed kicking puppies twice a day, and after some discussion decided to not do that would we all be applauding their decision?

synicalx··on Former Google CEO blames remote work for company's struggles
> Google decided that work-life balance and going home early, and working from home, was more important than winning

I mean... yeah? If you don't do those things, guess what's going to happen to your best people; they're going to leave because someone else is going to treat them like people rather than "resources".

synicalx··on LLM-based sentiment analysis of Hacker News posts between Jan 2020 and June 2023
> Hate : Torture

Great work folks, glad we can all agree on that one.

Interesting that they used an LLM for this. I mean it makes sense and the data seems to pass the pub test but I, in my ignorance, would not have assumed that a language model would be well suited for number crunching.

synicalx··on Study shows that tacking the “AI” label on products may drive people away
Can't wait for my washing machine to be able to make an API call to OpenAI so it can worked out how best to tackle the stain on my undies. We really are living in the future.
synicalx··on Takeaways from the Vision Pro after 6 months
I'd love to try one, but their price in my country (Australia) is absolutely bonkers. For the same money I could literally buy a perfectly usable secondhand car.

If it was at most, the same cost as a Macbook Pro or ideally a Macbook Air I might think about getting one.

synicalx··on Employers used return-to-office to make workers quit
As an IC, you don't really get a say in what your metrics are though.
synicalx··on Every Microsoft employee is now being judged on their security work
I'm kind of surprised this wasn't already a thing. Are we to believe that up until literally today, most employees at MS didn't have to think about security? The same MS who's products and platforms are certified for use in, and also actively used in defence, banking, health etc.

synicalx··on DHH: Make Software Simple Again
> But do you need to boot a custom image?

You still need to boot from something custom or otherwise, and that something needs to be updated and maintained. Realistically it's probably going to be slightly more on the custom side once you take into account drivers for special snowflake stuff like fancy NIC's and storage controllers.

The OS itself is largely irrelevant, but managing the consistency its state (or lack thereof) and configuration across a fleet is quite important IMO. When you're talking bare metal you have a lot of other security holes you need to deal with as well; BMC's, firmware, drivers etc all need to be kept up to date (and tested).

synicalx··on DHH: Make Software Simple Again
I kind of feel like he's right, but his other recent declaration of "just run your own infrastructure" is kind of antithetical to making stuff simpler? Cloud isn't always the best fit, and there's literally nothing wrong with running your own infrastructure if that's the best solution for you, but it's far from simple.

Extremely basic, context-less example; If I want to have my EC2 boot from an image, I build an AMI, then I put that ARN into a config file or similar and off we go. As a once off thing I would also need to configure some other basic stuff like a VPC, security groups, gateways etc but there's not necessarily any ongoing overheads from that. We're looking at a few config files in total without any specialist knowledge being necessary.

If I want my Supermicro/Quanta/Dell to boot from an image in a similar fashion I have to build the image, I have to host the image, I have to make it available on the network, I have to configure DHCP, I have to configure the BMC (and Redfish is probably not implemented quite right, lets be honest here), then I can boot from it.

Once that's done I've also got to maintain; the host, the BMC and it's firmware, credentials for said BMC (securely), other firmware on the system, the entire network (securely) and a bunch of other stuff I probably haven't even considered. All requiring at least one, arguably two additional domains of knowledge on top of what a normal developer would typically have + a significant up front and ongoing time commitment.

synicalx··on What adults lost when kids stopped playing in the street
I'd rather not have a group of people yelling and screaming outside my house, children or otherwise.
synicalx··on What adults lost when kids stopped playing in the street
I for one am glad kids don't play in the street any more, I'd hate to have to hear all that noise constantly. Backyards with high fences are much better - they can still play outside if they want to but the noise is far more isolated.
synicalx··on End of an Era: A Message from the Founder as We Announce the Closure of AppleVis
> I think the real problem is we don't care about handicapped people.

Specifically within the Apple ecosystem, I feel like there's a lot of support for handicapped people and has been for a reasonably long time?

synicalx··on Up to 90% of my code is now generated by AI
In that very specific scenario, no. Fortunately there are many more use cases for comments other than just linking to design docs and jira tickets.
synicalx··on Nearly 2/3 of Home Listings Have Been Sitting on the Market Longer Than a Month
You're 100% right, but people outside 'straya probably aren't familiar enough with the situation and just see any mention of immigration as a bad thing.
synicalx··on Up to 90% of my code is now generated by AI
My fault for poor wording, what I mean it understands the code its commenting on, and writes useful comments that I would normally write myself, and can also write simple boilerplate code for me.

So for example if I start typing 'while' it will let me tab complete out the whole skeleton of that loop. For simpler things it even seems to be able to guess my intentions and actually populate the loop and its conditions.

synicalx··on Nearly 2/3 of Home Listings Have Been Sitting on the Market Longer Than a Month
Awesome, please ship some of them over here to Australia and help solve our housing crisis.
synicalx··on Why many studies wrongly claim it's healthy to drink a little alcohol
I'm not sure about required, but depending where you live most of the stuff that's open at night is drinking-related ie. bars, pubs and clubs. A table full of people in a busy bar only ordering Coke or water is going to be kicked out pretty quickly.

If I wanted to go out at night in my city, and go somewhere that wasn't centered around booze I'd be going home around 8 or 9PM since nothing PG-13 is open late.

synicalx··on An ordinary day with a Linux mobile device
"Sorry I left you on read babe, Wayland broke again".

Joking aside this is kinda cool, I'd love to have something like b/dmenu for Android.

synicalx··on Up to 90% of my code is now generated by AI
I don't think AI could generate 90% or even 40% of my code, but by god does it generate me a lot of boilerplate and comments. My work just gave us all Copilot and it's really good at creating useful comments (even for Pydocs), and writing out simple but mildly tedious things like the outline of a loop, simple functions etc. No risk really from either since they're all short enough for me to sanity check as the AI is writing them, but a very very useful little time saver IMO.
synicalx··on Why the greatest athletes don't get paid like it
I mean, at the end of the day despite their enormous athletic achievements it's hard not to view nearly all traditional Olympic sports as a hobby. They're typically quite mundane things, and they're never going to attract a regular audience of any real size.

Things like basketball and tennis are successful outside of the Olympics because people like watching them, but its pretty hard to get excited about watching someone throwing an object exactly one, or running for 11 seconds once every 4 years.

synicalx··on Ask HN: How do you choose a hostname for personal devices?
Mine are all named after ships from the Expanse, generally based on what they are or how I use them. My phone is the Rocinante, big beefy desktop is the Donnager, NAS is the Nauvoo etc.
synicalx··on A Swiss town banned billboards. Zurich, Bern may soon follow
Ah yes, the two genres of advertising; AI and outdoor billboards.
synicalx··on Japan chain uses AI to gauge staff smiles, speech tones in QoS push
Whole thing is very creepy and weird, and no one involved will like or benefit from it. BUT. Can anyone explain what on earth "standardise its employees’ smiles" actually means? Are we talking quantity of teeth visible, mouth dilation, duration, accompanying sound etc?
synicalx··on Banks find AML "ineffective", propose access to social media
As someone who hasn't had social media for several years, unless you count this site for some reason, this is mildly concerning. Do I just have to make a burner Facebook account so my bank will let me access my own money?
synicalx··on Google is the only search engine that works on Reddit now, thanks to AI deal
> Of course, we have to be careful not to villainize a neutral tech

This is a very good point IMO. If we're going to chastise LLM's we may as well give servers, switches, routers, fiber-optic cable, and silicone a bollocking as well since that's ultimately what's facilitating all this.
