syn0byte··on Writing Exploit-Resistant Code with OpenBSD
No one likes hearing the truth. However, to bolster your point; ASLR. OpenBSD was the first to implement and support it. It Generally seems to just be a bullet point of an extra step taken in a given exploit POC these days.
syn0byte··on Denver voters consider next frontier in decriminalizing drugs: magic mushrooms
They can't. Tolerance builds rapidly, by the 3rd dose within a week you may as well have eaten white button mushrooms.

I mean... that's what I hear.

LD50 is also a non-issue as it requires you to eat near your own body weight. Again... that's what I hear anyway.

syn0byte··on Artists Are Reviving the Idea of the Medieval Guild
So trade schools and certifications; What's old is less old again!
syn0byte··on Amazon Has Gone from Neutral Platform to Cutthroat Competitor: Open Source Devs
Because everyone using the OSS license still benefits from your contribution? Why contribute to any of these projects now if Amazon is just going to integrate it into AWS for their own profit anyway?
syn0byte··on The 'Dark Ages' Weren't as Dark as We Thought
Is it a sensible expectation though? I would fully expect the richest/powerful to bear the brunt of retaliation as a civilization crumbles. The sins of the father and all that.

Would you want to be related to Trump if the economy tanked and social services started breaking down?

syn0byte··on Ford CEO says the company 'overestimated' self-driving cars
It's in all likelihood already safer than that status quo by an order of magnitude. Not that they are that good but the status quo is really that bad.

But it's the devil we know, It's fine that we average 3,287 fatalities a day[0].

We also have more empty homes than homeless, more food than starving people, crippling homelessness and 1:4 malnourished children in the US alone. I expect nothing from humanity yet I am still disappointed.

syn0byte··on Congress Is About to Ban the US Government from Offering Free Online Tax Filing
Point 2 is after-the-fact rationalization so they don't have to admit point 1 in public.
syn0byte··on A majority of consumers do not expect Google to track their activities
Does the free market care about how happy it's cows are? Do McDonald's products suffer when cows are unhappy? Does Camberage Analytics give a crap about what you like, does it affect their products?

Moo.

syn0byte··on Losing My Perfect Job
Long enough to be someone else's problem. System working as designed.
syn0byte··on I tried creating a web browser, and Google blocked me
They have complete access to the source to verify its function. They just don't because fuck you that's why. What are you going to do about it anyway, cry on HN and Twitter?

Mozilla is Mozilla and can mount a defense so they get a license deal.

syn0byte··on A Magician Explains Why We See What’s Not There
The example of Agnosia cited in the article indicates that there wouldn't be any degradation. Proprioception and physical interaction seem to have their own dedicated pathway.

If not being able to tell vertical from horizontal didn't affect the patient's ability to interact with the world, why would not being able to tell if a face is "happy" or "sad" have an impact?

syn0byte··on The Death of External Storage: Where's Google?
Physical windows don't serve us well when you consider every burglary ever. We should just not put windows in buildings, everyone can rely on their HVAC provider which promises 5 9s uptime to keep from suffocating. Besides, its not like we are just sealing the buildings completely, just limiting access to HVAC staff.

Nope, No problem at all.

syn0byte··on The Death of External Storage: Where's Google?
Except we can't in most cases; It's disallowed by vendors. The reason used to justify these arbitrary lockouts? Most users are "more likely to be harmed by allowing" it... Tautology much?
syn0byte··on Keybase is not softer than TOFU
Biggest issue is single point of failure for total access to all devices. Get\guess\beat out the master password and its game over on all connected devices.
syn0byte··on Apple updates its iMac line
Meh, not defending Apple in any way but RPM isn't a very useful metric without other specs on the drive.

Battery life and durability are better on 5400 drives. Performance is a tricky one too. Depending on use case, say a PC doing lots of large sequential data (Media)? 10/15k with high IOP and random access times don't actually help much when streaming home movies instead of serving up highly concurrent database records.

This is Apple doing Apple; very well-designed but midrange hardware with a premium price tag.

syn0byte··on The CSS Standard Color Names and “Rebecca Purple”
"You're not wrong, you're just an asshole" -- The Dude

It's just a list of arbitrarily predefined colors not a vital part of the core spec. Why spend the energy arguing against it? 'Mistyrose' and 'mintcream' are super serious business and don't sound like stripper names at all.

syn0byte··on Datacenter RPCs can be general and fast
Why would they stop companies from contributing optional code to Linux for their products when you can just (not) compile what you want of it?

The linux eco-system does not begin and end with a RHEL/Ubuntu binary distribution built to run on every crappy PC in the last decade.

syn0byte··on Post-mortem of March 12 Google outage
In short; QA forget to ask the bartender where the bathroom was.
syn0byte··on Tim Berners-Lee: 'Stop web's downward plunge to dysfunctional future'
...Yes, It did. The dialer was proprietary but it fully initialized the network stack on the OS. You just had to leave it open like you would any PPP or SLIP client. IP? winipcfg

Maybe your friend had some ancient Win95 build without a full TCP stack installed by default?

syn0byte··on Faxing is growing in popularity
Not that solid. "POTS" lines only really exist at the last mile to customers, otherwise its all digital/VoIP. Plenty of places faxing will fail do to "line quality" issues. Fax only continues to work at all because the infrastructure takes great pains to keep them working.

syn0byte··on DRAM Prices in ‘Freefall’
Not until you wrap it in electron anyway.

hacking up and rebranding an IRCd is a tried and true startup method. Napster, Slack, Discord...

syn0byte··on 2017 saw highest rate of death due to alcohol, drugs, suicide in US history [pdf]
Muscle relaxers, certain types of steroids, GHB, NO2, and even cocaine are all technically part of that list.

Your not wrong, but it's not that super clear cut either.

syn0byte··on ARM processors like A12X are nearing performance parity with desktop processors
“In the space of one hundred and seventy six years the Lower Mississippi has shortened itself two hundred and forty-two miles. That is an average of a trifle over a mile and a third per year. Therefore, any calm person, who is not blind or idiotic, can see that in the Old Oölitic Silurian Period, just a million years ago next November, the Lower Mississippi was upwards of one million three hundred thousand miles long, and stuck out over the Gulf of Mexico like a fishing-pole. And by the same token any person can see that seven hundred and forty-two years from now the Lower Mississippi will be only a mile and three-quarters long, and Cairo [Illinois] and New Orleans will have joined their streets together and be plodding comfortably along under a single mayor and a mutual board of aldermen. There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact.” -- Mark Twain
syn0byte··on Ghidra, NSA's reverse-engineering tool
Likely nothing, it's the source code for an RE toolkit with an NSA sticker right on the box. There is literally no worse place to try to hide back doors.

At worst they will know how to mask their real malware from analysis with their own tools.

syn0byte··on Studying the demise of historic civilisations
Suffering is largely a constant. The difference between "war" and "peace" is only in who is suffering, and how much everyone else does or doesn't care.
syn0byte··on USB4 Specification Announced: Adopting Thunderbolt 3 Protocol for 40 Gbps USB
It just means on the spec sheet its enough bandwidth for 2 4k streams. (HDMI 1.4 4k@60FPS == ~18Gbps)
syn0byte··on Amazon Web Services CEO: We’re a $30b revenue business in the ‘early stages’
But it does and it will take away an amount of sovereignty. "Excuse me AWS, Can you send me every hard drive used in the storage of Dataset X? Not copies, the original drives. I need to destroy all the drives per regulations." GDPR muddies the waters too. If AWS is the cause of a fuck up and a bucket is accessible on the internet, good luck proving your company shouldn't be saddled with the GDPR fine. AWS will have the technical means, monetary incentive and reputational impunity to claim it was your own fault.

Then there is the fact that a decade on the numbers are in; Cloud isn't any cheaper at the scale of most established businesses AWS wants to court. Often it's more expensive.

None of this will actually slow adoption. It probably should, but it won't.
