symlinkk··on Canonical Launches Ubuntu Pro
The purple / orange theme is gross looking and clashes with neutral colors from third parties. It just looks extremely unprofessional. They should just ship vanilla GNOME, it’s beautiful.
symlinkk··on Cloud desktops aren't as good as you'd think
VSCode Remote SSH’d into a cloud desktop is superior to local development. With the hardware being remote you can afford to get something that’s ultra fast and can run 24/7, and it still feels just as snappy and responsive as running it locally. I think this will be the standard for development within 3 years.

Good luck with your interview!

symlinkk··on From Burned Out Tech CEO to Amazon Warehouse Associate
Genuinely wondering how you came up with that. How much do you think Americans have left after taxes and living expenses?
symlinkk··on From Burned Out Tech CEO to Amazon Warehouse Associate
I would. Imagine getting paid to be outdoors in the sun getting exercise. Imagine not having to spend an extra hour each day in a crowded gym doing boring repetitive movements because your sedentary job would ruin your body otherwise. Imagine not having posture and back problems at age 30. Imagine having the output of a hard days work be a physical object you can point to your son and say “see? I made that”.

Software development is taxing on your brain the same way physical labor is taxing on your body. It’s depressing, soul sucking work. You’re stuck inside, staring at a screen for 8+ hours a day.
symlinkk··on Google is shutting down Stadia
Slightly above average?
symlinkk··on Google is shutting down Stadia
How is that any different than Steam? You’re arguing against DRM, not against cloud gaming
symlinkk··on The Fed plans to sharply boost unemployment
Democrats are going to get annihilated in the midterms because of this.

symlinkk··on EVGA terminates Nvidia partnership [video]
I never understood what value these third parties (EVGA, MSI, etc) were providing over just getting the card straight from NVIDIA / AMD.
symlinkk··on iPhone 14 Pro Camera Review: Scotland
Who cares? The improvements here are beyond minuscule. It would affect my life more if Chipotle came out with a new flavor of chicken
symlinkk··on Ask HN: What happened to vanilla HTML/CSS/JS development?
But if you’re going to use a framework like HTMX and the others you mentioned, why not just use React? Vanilla JS is great because it’s universally available, if you’re choosing to drop that advantage I would just go with React.
symlinkk··on I patched my Slack client to keep “oops” messages others delete
Seems a little unethical, kind of a violation of the other person’s expectations of privacy.

Everything is getting worse.
symlinkk··on Smoking, alcohol and high BMI are leading risk factors for global cancer deaths
I’m so sick of these articles, this is another useless correlations study that tells me nothing. I’m going to continue to drink until someone can tell my clearly and succinctly how much of a risk it is.
symlinkk··on Housing is at the root of many of the rich world’s problems (2020)
Not only do you not care, it actively benefits you to “pull up the ladder” and prevent others from getting on board.
symlinkk··on Ford F-150 Lightning: Fast Truck, Slow Computer
What do you drive?
symlinkk··on Ford F-150 Lightning: Fast Truck, Slow Computer
I disagree, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are great. The problem comes when the manufacturer’s interface collides with the Android / Apple interface. Just build a great touchscreen, let Android / Apple handle everything they can, and leave the rest (HVAC controls, volume controls) as physical buttons and switches. You get the best of both worlds - no need to pay an in house team of software engineers who will never be able to compete with Google or Apple anyway, and you please your customers who by and large want physical buttons and knobs.
symlinkk··on Declining quality of consumer-grade products – 2009 fridge compressor autopsy
Worse how? Price? No. Taste? No. Speed? No. Nutrition? Not too bad if you skip the fries and soda. I think “Supersize Me” has brainwashed people into thinking fast food is some kind of particularly evil stuff. It’s just food.
symlinkk··on A little exercise each day improves muscles more than one big weekly workout
Why beat around the bush? Just go straight to TRT
symlinkk··on A little exercise each day improves muscles more than one big weekly workout
Which is part of why we (programmers) get paid so much, we are doing work that is objectively unnatural and unhealthy (hunching over a desk in a sedentary position for the majority of the day).
symlinkk··on A little exercise each day improves muscles more than one big weekly workout
Huh?
symlinkk··on A little exercise each day improves muscles more than one big weekly workout
Let’s be honest, by “healthier life” you primarily mean you will look good and feel good. It’s not really about living longer or keeping your organs in good shape or any of that, you can accomplish that with just light cardio. The real reason men lift weights is to pick up women and gain respect in the eyes of other men.

symlinkk··on Ask HN: How to find a small town to relocate for remote work?
By “the culture” are you referring to the high murder rate?
symlinkk··on Declining quality of consumer-grade products – 2009 fridge compressor autopsy
Why are people so ashamed to admit they like fast food online? “I matured away from the flavor” Dude McDonalds is fucking good, I don’t care how old you are.
symlinkk··on Milwaukee Tool Raises the Bar with New USA Factory
Because BMW and Mercedes are pushing the envelope in technology. Lexus and Toyota stick with old technology. It makes their cars less pleasant to use - older infotainment, worse performance - but they are more reliable. Different values.
