symkat··on My Weekend Project: Things Done Later
I'd really like the KanBan interface to be added. =)

Also, perhaps displaying the due date and changing colors if it's past due / about to be due might be a good idea. For instance, the day before change yellow and the day after change red?

When things are selected as done, the next day pushing them into an "Archive" list similar to how Things does it might also be cool.

symkat··on Ask HN: Anyone interested in meeting other HNers?
Interesting project. A few of the immediate problems I see:

1) It looks far more like people just posting an introduction about themselves. Let's say that a month from now you have 200 posts on it, and I'm looking to see if anyone wants to get lunch in Santa Monica. This doesn't appear terribly easy, and being lazy I'm not going to spend more than about 1 minute trying to find people.

2) I don't see that any of these expires. If I post for lunch in an hour and a half or so, it will live on forever. This is much more an event and time-based thing, yet the records live on more like a blog/news/announcement section.

Dates, times, and locations should be displayed well, a search by city would be most useful as well.

symkat··on Why Women Should Flirt at Work
That would assume people are aware of their predispositions on a general basis.

Some of those are simple, "stop being X to Y people because you think they are Z" is much easier to notice a pattern of than the sub-conscious effects of "for some reason I don't like people who act in these ways."

symkat··on Applications for tenure track CS position restricted to women only

Loyola is an EEO employer that seeks applications from women and members of minority groups.
Yeah... because "women and members of minority groups" is clearly an "equal opportunity".
symkat··on Why working from home or Starbucks is a bad idea
This article seems a bit misleading to me. First, it starts on the premise that working from home or Starbucks is what a lot of bootstrap companies do and think it's good and keeping costs down.

Then it leads into why building a company is this environment is bad. Your employees are going to start looking for other startups, you don't have enough whiteboard to map things out.

It seems to me that the reasons for needing "30,000" square feet of office space are applicable to a financed company, not so much a bootstrap. I don't think the argument that's being made here is supported by the arguments for it.

From my own experience at least in building random projects out, Starbucks works really well for me. I bring headphones, so the distractions of the "annoying person on the phone" don't really apply. It helps me focus because it does get rid of the distractions of home, without adding any distractions.

symkat··on Ask HN: Who do you trust when it comes to sharing your ideas?
Mainly because of the amount of time I would have had to devote to it, and the amount of things I would have had to learn. It was an idea of "That would be cool to have." It wasn't a project I would be passionate about. I go to amusement parks about once every other year.

I'd have to have been in the park a lot to map out points where you could walk, write the algorithms for navigating the park from any random point of interest to any other random point of interest in a reasonably efficient way while following the boundaries of the pathways. I'd have to have kept the app updated when anything changed at the park, including things like "For two weeks, this one path is blocked off because construction is happening" which happens fairly regularly at Knott's Berry Farm.

Although those are all challenges I could have overcome given the time and resources, it wasn't something I would be very passionate about and it would die out as a result.

I've had a lot of reasonably good ideas, and some of them have worked out rather well in the past. Most of them I don't pursue more than as an idle thought. Those I choose to work on I do as a result of how much fun they will be, how passionately I feel about what I'm building, and how challenging I think it will be. A few weeks ago How I Met Your Mother inspired the idea for http://www.notanewyorker.com/ and that was something I said, "I'll build it tonight, I have nothing better to do." It's a cute little website, and the biggest motivating factor was I thought it would be funny, and using Python on Google AppEngine would be interesting because I've not used it to build anything like that. I found I hate Google AppEngine now though.

symkat··on Ask HN: Who do you trust when it comes to sharing your ideas?
I typically run my ideas through a few friends on IRC first. They'll play devil's advocate on my ideas. If I still like it I'll draw up a little spec or general overview, and then I'll share it with some co-workers and best friends. Depending on how excited I am at this point and how much work there is to do, it might get done or it might be in my queue of things to look at later.

I have a lot of stuff marked "Later".

With regard to someone stealing the idea, I don't really worry about it. I regularly give ideas I've had away, especially if I think I'll never make them.

A few years ago a friend and I were at a restaurant and there guys were trying to figure out something to build on the iPhone, my friend and I had just come back from an amusement park in southern California and I suggested a custom map of amusement parks that has points of interest for all the restaurants and rides and gets you there within the boundaries of the pathways in the park. I had the idea earlier that day, but I would never build it myself, so to me it was fairly useless.

symkat··on Review my one-night project: I Made the TSA Feel My Resistance
If you're going for just a meme site it's fairly awesome. Simple, pretty, gets the point across.

If you're trying to actively promote a stand against those machines, more information would be a great addition. An about page that goes over what's happening, and a section that links to other places talking about it. Perhaps adding the ability for people to share their experiences directly on the page instead of just tweeting.

It's cute and pretty, but I think it lacks substance.

symkat··on Markup validation of http://www.google.com
Whenever I see things along this line, I think back to something a mentor and close friend of mine has said, repeatedly:

You should never do this. Unless you have a really good reason.
Do not think for one second someone from Google is going to see this and go, "Oh darn it, I knew I was supposed to do something before google went live."
symkat··on Prop 19 defeated..What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. LikePot.com
With the recent decriminalization of pot in California, it makes no sense to me that people would vote against this.

Half of my friends have "green cards" (medical marijuana cards) that can be bought for around $150 from random doctors after you say you have "headaches," "trouble sleeping," or "anxiety." The ease of getting a card, combined with the availability of "clubs" has made pot for anyone with disposable income trivial at best to legally obtain.

Teachers are being laid off, random services are getting budget cuts, income tax returns were getting IOUs last year, and pot is already trivial to access: Why aren't we manufacturing and taxing this?

symkat··on The time I hacked my high school
The high-school I went to served pizza and french fries regularly. The food was extremely unhealthy and to my knowledge that hasn't changed much. It's far easier to deep fry a few hundred pounds of tater tots than to make a few thousand sandwiches and sliced apples.

I doubt either option was fairly healthy for the students, but I wouldn't use a high-school cafeteria as the epitome of healthy living.

Also for some reason the rich kids at my school typically brought their own lunch and ate more natural food than the middle-class or the poor kids. Anecdotal at best, but that was my experience.

symkat··on The time I hacked my high school
The students who bought the food at the lunch sales most likely did not care what their money was going to. This was not like paying taxes, it was getting restaurant food at a markup at your high school. I'm sure that those who actually thought about where the money for their food was going were few and far between.

The end-result of this hack was that the student government opened up selling outside food at lunch time more often for more clubs than previously allowed.

I see this as good for everyone involved, with the possible exception perhaps of the poor kids.

symkat··on Monetizing Business Ideas
So we need someone with capitol, someone with attorney and tax skills, and someone with web-design skills and someone with backend and systems arch skills to build Scott's idea. Oh, and servers. Let's start refining the details and come to an agreement everyone is happy with.
symkat··on [dead]
You, good sir, win the award for breaking just about every consideration I can think of. Bad title, bad link, just, horrible. Be shamed. Very very shamed.
symkat··on One Dunkin’ Donuts store is taking a stand against the penny
This would be nicer if they rounded benefiting the customer at all times.

Although I don't exactly see how a few pennies can slow down transactions in any significant way. You can get up to one more penny than you would get in quarters. Pennies come in roles >2 as large as quarters.

symkat··on Protect Your Site with a Blackhole for Bad Bots
This is pretty neat.

Something we did at $company[-2] is we had a block of IPs that weren't used for customer traffic. If something hit them (SSH login attempts, HTTP GET requests that were looking for RFI vulnerabilities, etc, etc) the IP would be firewalled from the entire network for a period of time (generally 2-3 days).

symkat··on Use Vim Like A Pro
emacs has a text editor too? I always just used it as an irc client... (http://delysid.org/emacs/erc.html)

http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/EmacsCrashCourse is fairly good for a quick introduction to similar ways of doing things in emacs. =)

symkat··on Use Vim Like A Pro
Pet peeve: Vim should be spelled "Vim," not "VIM."(1) Consistency in case would also make it easier to read in my opinion, Vim/VIM seem to be used interchangeably throughout the article.(2) Other than that, this is a good crash course. =)

1 See spelling in use at http://www.vim.org/about.php

2 "Vim has a small footprint in RAM and on the CPU. A given system can support a great many VIM users at once."

symkat··on Koobface Can Infect Linux Systems Too
Uh huh... so it can infect Linux after you click the applet to "trust" it.

This like saying giving someone a shell script to rm -fr / and having them run it is infecting the system.

symkat··on Why your desk job is slowly killing you
Or perhaps look at the way people eat in other countries outside of America where most people aren't obese and compare notes.
symkat··on Occam's Forgotten Razor
Cuddling up with a warm cup of coffee and starting that article... then so suddenly it ends! I continued to look for content everywhere, believing that perhaps it was hidden in the source as <!-- comments --> and then I thought if I sent it random user agents I would get it. Then I tried to reload it a few hundred times. Still no content... where is it hidden?
symkat··on Ask HN: Should I put my github profile on my Resume?
Any contributions to Open Source Projects, your own projects that you've released, and notable contributions should be shared. Similar to how a designer has a portfolio. If you have a tech-related blog you might want to include that as well (but not your personal ranting and raving blog about how sad you are and that your kitty is ignoring you again.) That's just creepy.
symkat··on How To Use SSL To Secure Your Rails App Against e.g. FireSheep
Also keep in mind that SSL makes serving sites based on the host header much more difficult, and is one of a handful of justifications for additional IPs according to ARIN. Last I checked running multiple sites from a single IP with one of them using SSL was against something, but I can't seem to find that now.

Although it is trivial to implement SSL, you should only do it if you need to because of the above, using up all the IPv4 addresses because your random video sharing website might have a user somewhere on a wireless network where their cookies are hijacked. This attack has existed for pretty much ever and isn't very useful for a dedicated focused attack.

symkat··on Ask HN: Do we no longer support our members?
Yes! 20 minutes after watching that episode I conned SimCop into doing the front-end for me. I was dismayed to see that RateMyTeacher already has real websites. :) We've been rapidly reiterating the site based on the comments from the thread here (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1800422), and other feedback. We got a rated view about 2 hours ago because everyone kept asking for it, and some UI changes. =)
symkat··on My Weekend Project: Not A New Yorker (Feedback Requested)
Due to popular demand (and random assault) ranked view: http://www.notanewyorker.com/ranked/
symkat··on My Weekend Project: Not A New Yorker (Feedback Requested)
And now it's implemented.
symkat··on My Weekend Project: Not A New Yorker (Feedback Requested)
I definitely agree with this. The post handler should raise an error inside of the normal template, and automatically put your text back into the textarea.
symkat··on My Weekend Project: Not A New Yorker (Feedback Requested)
There are lots and lots of little visual tweaks that will be done to this as soon as I can con some more front-end time from simcop.

No ordering is yet implemented based on rating, everything is displayed based on the created date. Any posts which reach -10 are deleted. I figured that would be a good anti-spam method, and it seems like some spamming things are hitting that.

Once there is more data some "Best of" and such sort links will most likely be added =)

symkat··on My Weekend Project: Not A New Yorker (Feedback Requested)
The links for my blog, simcop's blog, twitter/facebook sharing have now been given target="_blank". =)
symkat··on My Weekend Project: Not A New Yorker (Feedback Requested)
I think it will become less confusing as more content becomes available. Basically if the next page exists, show a link to it, otherwise give a link to the homepage. The same goes for previous. / is the "lastest" page, with /page/1 being the next latest page. This structure is the same as FML's as far as I recall.
