swilliamsio··on Rules of thumb for a 1x developer
Even if the interviewers were concerned about your age, you'd never be asked how old you were in an interview. That's grounds for a discriminatory law suit basically anywhere in the world.
swilliamsio··on Will cable TV be invaded by commercials? (1981)
Your DVDs don't have unskippable anti-piracy ads and ads for movies that released decades ago?
swilliamsio··on Ask HN: What is your blog and why should I read it?
http://www.swilliams.io

Just an assortment of varied stuff I've delved into. Mostly all tech. All short and sweet (hopefully).

swilliamsio··on Mongolia to restore traditional alphabet
Inner Mongolia already uses the traditional script so if anything this news is indicative of increased Chinese influence and decreased Russian influence in Mongolia.
swilliamsio··on US Hospitals say feds are seizing masks and other coronavirus supplies
>Here's a nice quick map to view how it's playing out across the planet: https://google.com/covid19-map/?hl=en

I found this map breaks down the case numbers with a higher level of detail https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.h...

swilliamsio··on The 480
I prefer it. It encourages reading the article as opposed to just reading the title and assuming the articles content.
swilliamsio··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on now?
I'm looking into Xamarin for the first time. I've looked at the Xamarin 101 tutorial and seen the bare-bones note taking app they walk you through developing, and I'm hoping to improve it significantly. I've already added the feature to edit notes and set a title for a note, but there's still a few more ideas I want.

I think taking an existing project and improving upon it, as opposed to starting a fresh new project, has helped me somewhat. I have to think less about how to get it started and whether the framework or style is right, because some of the code is already there.

swilliamsio··on If nearly all Airbnb reviews are positive, does that make them meaningless?
YouTube originally had a five star rating system for each video but switched to the current thumbs up/down system. I believe the reason given was that almost all viewers either give five stars or one star, which made the middle three ratings pointless.
swilliamsio··on EU lawmakers snub Apple's pleas, vote to push for charging cable standard
Because it would be more convenient for everyone who has ever or will ever own more than one phone, or ever upgrade their phone. Imagine if you needed an adapter to refuel your car, or to plug an electric device into a wall. Genuinely, how is this any different?
swilliamsio··on The 'Spelling Bee Honeycomb' puzzle: efficient computation in R
You can play the daily New York Times Spelling Bee puzzle online[0]. It's free to play up till you get more than a certain number of points, then you require a subscription.

I made a little clone of the game to get around these restrictions[1].

swilliamsio··on Thank HN: You helped me get a new job
Congratulations, man! Your story is super positive I love it.
swilliamsio··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions?
1. The first nuclear fusion power plants are being built.

2. Universal Basic Income is being implemented across Europe.

3. Marijuana legalisation is commonplace in the west.

4. Steam will still dominate the PC gaming space.

5. Earth is not on track with regards to CO2 emissions.

6. Self driving cars/vans/lorries are common, replacing taxis and mutating the transportation sector.

7. Legislation will exist banning or requiring notice of deepfake videos, similar to current legislation around product placement/sponsorship.

8. Copyright laws will change to prevent early Disney cartoons from being public domain.

9. Streaming service industry become more fragmented as all studios create their own versions of Netflix. Other companies sell package deals of bundled services, effectively recreating all the problems of TV.

10. Instance of massive cyberwarfare/cyberterrorism hits a large NATO power, grinding the country to a halt.

swilliamsio··on Show HN: Hide Likes Everywhere
Your concerns are valid if you are the type of person/organisation who worries about how many likes they get. I post to Instagram purely for my own amusement, and only use the feed to catch up with family and friends - I really don't care how many likes I get or any post I view gets.
swilliamsio··on Developer Roadmaps
I partially agree. The backend map seems really wishy-washy. The front end map seems much more useful, just because it's more limited in scope. It would be better I feel with in depth tutorials for every step, or links to them, with achievable goals at every step, kind of like a testable curriculum.
swilliamsio··on Using Firefox for a faster, calmer and distraction-free internet
For mobile, I switched to Firefox which was a fantastic decision. Firefox on mobile is as fast as Chrome whilst allowing the much needed adblock and darkmode plugins.

I'm hesitant to do the switch on desktop right now because, last time I checked, Firefox was slower than Chrome. However, the day I see ads on Chrome will be the day I am forced to make that switch. I do not need my browser experienced tainted by the slowing and frustrating appearance of ads nor do I want my mind subject to the so often poisonous online marketing.

swilliamsio··on M65 Atomic Cannon
Another fun nuclear weapon that would have destroyed Germany is Blue Peacock. It was a series of nuclear mines placed across West Germany to be detonated if the Soviets invaded. They used chickens to keep the mines warm in cold winters.
swilliamsio··on My name causes an issue with any booking
Similarly, there was a story going round a few years back about mail being delivered in Iceland where instead of an address there was a map to the house to be delivered: http://i.imgur.com/1GVjLKF.jpg
