swensel··on Has wine gone bad?
There are compounds in wine that resemble the aromas and flavors of other plants, foods, spices, etc. This is why there can be notes of 'chocolate' in a product made only from grapes. [1]

swensel··on Has wine gone bad?
In the US, New Zealand and Australia, wine is permitted to have a variance of 1.5% ABV. In Europe, wine is only permitted to have a .5% ABV variance. Taxes may be one reason why ABV is under-reported. [1]

swensel··on How to get the wine you really want
Barefoot and other mass produced wines are chemically treated. This is why they always taste the same. Variation from year to year is actually a good sign that what you're tasting is not just chemical flavoring.
swensel··on Ask HN: ExtJS vs. Backbone/Ember/Angular for huge Enterprise app?
I haven't worked with ExtJS but I've heard from developers I know that have worked with it that it is painful to deal with. Full of bugs, hard to customize, and overall just challenging to do anything with. It also has a pretty large footprint.

I think it would be a good idea to try to push for one of the other technologies you listed.

swensel··on Ask HN: How do you find the companies you want to work for?
Ask about the schedule of meetings and the normal work hours of the developers on the team you're interviewing for. Inquire about the work environment, is it cubes / walls, or large tables and open work spaces. What are the projects they're working on and technologies they're using? What are they looking for?

I feel you can get a sense of the vibe from talking to the interviewers, seeing how they act, what they say, and how they are leading the interview.

However, sometimes you don't know about the culture until actually working there, so it is good to try to interview them while they're interviewing you to make sure it's a place you want to work.

swensel··on Launch with bugs
Agreed. It's better to just get the product out there.
swensel··on Coding Cloud Heroku May Face Lawsuit Over Bait-and-Switch Claims
I don't think the issues with New Relic was necessarily Heroku's problem. Sure, Heroku did have some outdated info on their website and their logs may not be fully accurate, but I personally don't think that they should provide refunds for that. Solving the problems that have been raised would be a better service to their customers. Providing refunds probably doesn't help Heroku create a better service which is what I think will matter long term.
