> arguing about this is gonna be fruitless because it’s all subjective, there’s no hard numbers for any of it

I was just genuinely curious what somebody with your set of opinions has in mind for a time frame, because "1/100th the corruption" is too vague for me to quantify in my head.

As for arguing, I generally don't expect to change opinions with comments, especially those of whom I'm engaging with directly, so no worries there.

swed420··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
You're ignoring the important fact that Dem primaries are rigged, or like last time, simply non-existent. Their agents of capital are preselected from the start.

Feel free to pretend you have a voice in the ballot box, but you don't in any significant way. You get to decide the color scheme and decide between decorum or crude, but it's the same pile of self-serving shit behind the scenes.

> What a childish, stupid opinion.

Democrats lost to a gameshow host. Twice. They just had to be better than that, and they couldn't manage. Pathetic. They also created the conditions for his rise. Twice. The bar is so amazingly low, and yet you can't comprehend how they keep fumbling this. Maybe, just maybe, it's a good cop / bad cop arrangement where only capital interests win, and it's a race to the bottom for everybody else. Or maybe that's just a childish, stupid opinion. Who knows!

swed420··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
No, they each manufacture consent for capital interests in a race to the bottom for everybody else, using time-tested good cop / bad cop, revolving door corruption, etc.

Identifying as independent is the first step toward not voting at all (which itself is a type of vote, especially in a rigged system).

So definitely not meaningless. It demonstrates increasing amounts of people are tired of pretending our democracy isn't mostly illusory.

> This is mostly wording

Right, but the distinction is relevant in the context of the original claim:

> People setting up homelab often talk about money saved but never account for the time they have to spend

My point was that many of us do account for this time in the aforementioned ways.

Plus, once it's set up, it practically runs itself if you have a sane backup methodology and are only running upgrades every couple months.

> yes but there is still an opportunity cost

I would call it more of a set of tradeoffs

> a lot of the time is spent on doing menial system admin tasks

This is the refreshening opportunity for us non-admins, and a learning opportunity to automate as much of it as possible.

Other benefits not mentioned include not signing your data or life away to whatever Google's lawyers or marketers have decided is best for them, contributing to FLOSS even if only as an end user, not being a victim of rug-pulls...the list goes on.

Obviously this isn't for everybody, because there's no denying it takes time. The point is that for many, this is a very easy tradeoff to make when factoring in all of the other benefits.

What you call a commitment, many call a hobby / learning / refreshening opportunity.

> if copyrigth is abolished. amazon would publish every single boon without giving a cent to writers. it would be reqlly hard for writers to make a living.

How about a unified social platform that allows people to donate to the authors/artists/creators/projects of their choosing? It could allow feedback similar to goodreads, and also be more longterm focused than the traditional kickstarter, etc. The social aspect would give people a pat on the back for sending money somewhere.

And what systemic problems have they addressed since then? I don't live there, but it seems that NHS is increasingly gutted by capital interests, with no end in sight.

At best, you get an illusion of progress. That's not progress.

> I expect the next administration will push through some laws limiting this sort of idiocy.

The problem is that the bar is now so low that basically anybody will win, by design.

They'll pass some surface level bullshit to treat symptoms, like how lakes can or cannot be renamed. But they'll fail to address any root, systemic issues that allowed this BS to unfold in the first place, paving the way for the other half of the Uniparty to resume power 4-8 years later.

Democracy is illusory.

swed420··on The internet is kind of a predatory cesspit now
> What ruined the internet is monetized social media, regardless ad driven or direct monetization

Agreed, and the first step ought to be a push for demonetized / citizen-owned platforms:

https://www.noemamag.com/the-last-days-of-social-media/

Note, however, that even with achieving this first step, we'll still have a platform full of profit-motivated actors, because our economies incentivize this behavior whether online or IRL.

Both problems need solving, but the first one is easier, and demonstrating its solution on a large scale could help convince everyone that it's an endeavor worth applying to all domains.
