swarnie··on WhatsApp banned on House staffers' devices
I do have a compliance need, similar to this office i imagine.

Teams is more secure in my opinion.

I as an admin can control who you can/can't talk to, what you can share with them, when you can share it. Correctly configured MS Teams is a pretty secure setup.

On the flipside im not sure i can make someone else's Whatsapp not auto download anything sent to it.... The two apps aren't really comparable unless I've missed an entire 'Whatapps for government/enterprise' business arm.

I ban Whatsapp but require Teams on company devices.

Can you explain why the thinking is wrong?

I was going to make a point here about it being ok to occasionally churn out some uncomplicated slop because it helps fund more interesting projects, that was until i looked up the maker of Friends and found NBC pretty much only make that kind of stuff.

NBC and Nintendo, no evolution or original thought. Just copy paste it to the masses because its all the seem to want anyway based on this thread.

Maybe im wrong for demanding more....

That's fine, no one is stopping the development of new board games to re-releases chess every six months with maybe one new piece or higher definition.

If you walked in to my living room and saw 17 almost identical paintings where maybe one is styled to look like papercraft, one has a little dinosaur, one has a racoon tail ect you'd rightly think i was a bit mad even before i announced i'd paid $80 for each one.

Now if i had 17 unique paintings exploring a variety of motifs and styles, each one with a story to tell that would actually be worth talking about.

The British one? Bores me to tears

The American version? Same but with more advertisements for pharmaceuticals.

I think that's more an issue with the specific rules/players/fans though, I've not had a problem watching multiple matches of other sports in a day.

Video game consumers have always baffled me and this data just adds to it.

Who are the 7 million people going out to buy the 20th Persona game? What are you actually hoping to get from it that isn't just a slight variance on something you've already had multiple times before?

I have friends genuinely excited to go buy Mario Cart for the 17th time this year... Once you've made two objects move along an enclosed route at differing speeds and slapped Nintendo marketing on top hasn't the game play evolved as much as possible?

Could the money not be better spent coming up with new and interesting concepts rather than copy pasting the same stuff out every 12-18 months?

swarnie··on WhatsApp introduces ads in its app
You're always going to send the message on the app with 100% coverage.

I'm not switching apps to send the same message to 50% of people and then again to 100% resulting in some switchers getting it twice.

And lets be honest, people dont walk around recommending chat apps to each other. It hasn't been 2010 for at least five years.

swarnie··on I'm starting a social club to solve the male loneliness epidemic
Only a guess but they all dropped the "working" and "men" requirements.

The latest incarnation was "Men in Sheds" which eventually got the traditional treatment - https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cg5qd9l3094o

swarnie··on Ask HN: What projects do you donate to?
Sorry, PowerToys boots on start up and flips my 2 and 6 keys around.

Sometimes i dont notice until mid morning.

swarnie··on Ask HN: What projects do you donate to?
Kagi - in the sense that i paid for a year of membership and only did about three searches.

I hear great things, i love the idea behind it, a 65 year habit is hard to break.

I'll be back soon.

swarnie··on European Investment Bank to inject €70B in European tech
I've never found someone with creative enough accounting to make UBI work. Just purely on numbers:

57 million UK adults getting £1000 a month (It'll leave you dying on the street in 1/3rd of the country)

Over the course of a year = £684 billion. Current total government spend is 1,278 billion

If you abolished all forms of social care including welfare, pensions, child care, disability (the lot). And education. And the NHS. you could do it providing you also dropped defence by 2/3rds.

UBI is madness.

No need to scrap the internet for photos

Just get a large chunk of your population to take part in a "two pictures ten years apart" meme every couple of years, they can provide their own evidence.

Maybe Facebook could be convinced to front such a program?

I know reddit will connect accounts together based on device ID, i wonder if their data becomes more valuable if you can tie multiple independent accounts together in to one profile?

Its a site where users will often have multiple login for different subjects of discussion.

Almost all developed countries have free trade agreements with their biggest partners.

100%+ fees added overnight are interesting, no one is writing features to show 0% that hasn't budged in decades.

What is the good reason?

Where I'm sat the only reason our three (?) social media companies restrict none illegal speech/content is to make it more appealing to advertisers.

I miss the internet before it was driven by advertisers and their investors.

The US dictated the rules of the modern world and have seemingly been happy with them for the last 80 years.

Everyone is fine if you want a change, go back to your own country, stop trying to be World Police and focus on domestic issues for a few years. What we aren't happy about is the constant threats of invasion and subjugation.

Unsure if its a new issue but I've checked the used car market and these things are dirt cheap, 2 year old cars are about as much as a modest Golf, 4-5 year olds match the price of a Polo.

If you can handle the occasional funny guy chucking you a heil as you drive past and tech that tries to murder you about once a month they look highly affordable. Probably not what they were going for but hey ho.
