svag··on Microsoft 3D Movie Maker Source Code
This is interesting at the bottom of the readme file

Jez also offered this interesting BRender anecdote in an email:

When Sam Littlewood designed BRender, he didn’t write the code. And then document it.
The way most things were built at the time.
First, he wrote the manual. The full documentation
That served as the spec. Then the coding started.

svag··on Finding a kernel regression in half an hour with git bisect run (2018)
I haven't used `git bisect` before, but a month ago I used it to find a bug in the RTSP part of VLC, https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues/25812.

It's one of those utilities that makes your life easier in so many levels.

I was wandering if there was no `git bisect` how difficult and time consuming the bug hunting would be.

svag··on IoT Unravelled Part 1: It's a Mess but Then There's Home Assistant
There is another home automation software, which is not as popular as Home Assistant, openHAB (https://www.openhab.org/). openHAB, just like HA, has many integrations, you can have a look on the website. The Github is https://github.com/openhab.

In the company I was working for we were trying to create a building automation software and we were between HA and openHAB. We finally chose openHAB because it is written in Java and we could find easier help from Java developers in-house rather than Python where HA is written.

To quote de Saint Exupéry "...perfection is finally attained not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away..."
svag··on Fuchsia is not Linux
As I can see, they use a microkernel architecture for the kernel[0]. I wonder why they need to create another microkernel OS and not re-use an existing one like MINIX 3 or QNX? What are the advantages of the Zircon Kernel compared to the MINIX 3 or QNX?

svag··on Buffer app hacked
This is the email I received:

Hi there,

I wanted to get in touch to apologize for the awful experience we've caused many of you on your weekend. Buffer was hacked around 1 hour ago, and many of you may have experienced spam posts sent from you via Buffer. I can only understand how angry and disappointed you must be right now.

Not everyone who has signed up for Buffer has been affected, but you may want to check on your accounts. We're working hard to fix this problem right now and we're expecting to have everything back to normal shortly.

We're posting continual updates on the Buffer Facebook page and the Buffer Twitter page to keep you in the loop on everything.

The best steps for you to take right now and important information for you:

    * Remove any postings from your Facebook page or Twitter page that look like spam
    * Keep an eye on Buffer's Twitter page and Facebook page
    * Your Buffer passwords are not affected
    * No billing or payment information was affected or exposed
    * All Facebook posts sent via Buffer have been temporarily hidden and will reappear once we've resolved this situation
I am incredibly sorry this has happened and affected you and your company. We're working around the clock right now to get this resolved and we'll continue to post updates on Facebook and Twitter.

If you have any questions at all, please respond to this email. Understandably, a lot of people have emailed us, so we might take a short while to get back to everyone, but we will respond to every single email.

svag··on Which hashing algorithm is best for uniqueness and speed?
It is worth mentioning that the libstdc++, in version 4.6.3 at least, it has implemented the Murmur and FNV hash function for user defined key types.

If you want to use Murmur you use std::_Hash_impl::hash and for FNV you use std::_Fnv_hash_impl::hash. (Include bits/functional_hash.h)

The implementation is at libsupc++/hash_bytes.cc

svag··on Ask HN: What literature do you read?
I am currently reading a book called "The Housekeeper and the Professor" of Yoko Ogawa.

I haven't finished it, but I find it quite interesting. It's the story of a housekeeper and a professor of mathematics who can remember new memories only for 80 minutes.

Here is a link to the relevant wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Housekeeper_and_the_Profess...

svag··on Wikipedia: Size in volumes
I believe the importance of Wikipedia is not so of how big it is, but how easily it's accessible (with no cost) and that the articles can be updated and be available almost instantly (in comparison with a hard copy encyclopedia).
