Indeed - sloppy reading on my part.

Might be you're logged in? I often hit a block when using (proton) vpn if I'm logged out but not otherwise.
suslik··on Micron Announces Exit from Crucial Consumer Business
A couple of years ago, one rainy Saturday morning, I woke up with a devastating hangover and nothing else to do - so I decided to build myself a PC, like in good old days. Turned out it wasn't at all difficult to find a local store; only two-three hours later I was already driving home with all these sexy looking boxes filled with hardware. That was in Sweden.
suslik··on UK Government plans new powers to label dissenting movements as 'subversion'
This comment has been marked as subversive; your social consensus alignment score has been corrected. Thank you!
suslik··on Lawmakers want to ban VPNs
Using this tech, all the CP traffic would detectably flow towards my ip, right? I’m sure I’m not the only one who would find this worrisome.
suslik··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
The main difference between mise and pixi is an ability to subscribe to conda channels and build (in an extremely fast way) conda environments, bypassing or eliminating most of the conda frustration (regular conda users know what I mean). mise allows to install asdf tools primarily (last I checked).

On the python front, however, I am somehow still an old faithful - poetry works just fine as far as I was every concerned. I do trust the collective wisdom that uv is great, but I just never found a good reason to try it.

Not to mention how much they did for Linux gaming.

> building digital fiefdoms with users as the serfs

I wouldn't call you names, but this does sound rather extreme. It also sounds rather imprecise. Is this a metaphor, or a hyperbole, or do you actually mean this literally? If so, in what way I, an iOS user, going to be an Apple serf?

suslik··on Delete FROM users WHERE location = 'Iran';
That you should join the war, kill some people, and potentially die yourself. A better question is why is that funny.
suslik··on Delete FROM users WHERE location = 'Iran';
I don't think you can guarantee that. Yes, you might have a strong prior in favour of that - most people don't have a propensity to prefer logical and systematic reasoning over strong emotions such as anger or hate - but it's still rather unfair to a person you're talking to to assume that must be the case.
suslik··on Top UN legal investigators conclude Israel is guilty of genocide in Gaza
> The best way to teach history would be to make politicians dig slit trenches and then shell them for a few days

I don't see why you think that. That didn't work for Hitler, Göring, and the countless numbers of WW1 veterans in the SA and SS hungry for another try.

suslik··on Top UN legal investigators conclude Israel is guilty of genocide in Gaza
It absolutely does have merit when the point is to highlight hypocrisy and bias.
suslik··on RSS is awesome
Yeah, perhaps I did not explain myself correctly (or, to be precise, explained myself incorrectly - I should not comment right after waking up). I want a tool that would take as input one or more RSS feeds and emits an aggregated RSS which I can then open in an RSS reader. I would then do certain things with the RSS entries (for instance, for some academic journals only the header of the article is emitted, so I can attach the full text or even an AI summary to it).
suslik··on RSS is awesome
Does anyone know if there is a self-hosted rss tool which exposes the data over API? I am interested in processing feeds programmatically but ideally would prefer not to bother with writing the update / subscription / parsing logic myself.
suslik··on Wikipedia loses challenge against Online Safety Act
The UK might not have the power to force extradition (neither does US, in fact), but to make life very inconvenient for someone - for sure.
suslik··on The demographic future of humanity: facts and consequences [pdf]
I’d say artificial womb is a technocratic center-left solution. A right-wing solution would be a proverbial “Kinder, Küche, Kirche” for all women.

I, for one, would bet my firstborn that a solution to the demographic question such that fulfills modern sensibilities is to ever be found.

suslik··on Wikipedia loses challenge against Online Safety Act
“Pay this or we will concoct some criminal charges on your entire leadership team, append each of you to interpol lists and formally request your extradition” is probably a good start.
suslik··on Stanford to continue legacy admissions and withdraw from Cal Grants
Sports can be big in a country, sure, but US is the only country I can recall where sports matters as a criteria to choose a university to go to (as an in op).

But just in case - it’s cool, I wasn’t being judgmental.

suslik··on Stanford to continue legacy admissions and withdraw from Cal Grants
> More NCAA championships and Olympic medals. Still leading in "big game" football series (though currently on a losing streak.)

As a side note, I always found this obsession with sports to be a fascinating aspect of american culture. Being from an entirely different culture, it’s unclear to me why on earth would anyone give a fuck about this.

suslik··on Replacing tmux in my dev workflow
Wow, I've tried tmux like a hundred times and could never learn to like it, falling back to screen and promising to myself - never again. I'm going to break my promise to try this.
suslik··on What would an efficient and trustworthy meeting culture look like?
> if you're hosting a meeting, only invite people who MUST [0] be there. If the meeting could still take place and be useful without someone, don't invite them just to listen in.

I don't think this advice is generic - there can be different perspectives here.

In a managerial role in a large corpo, doing what could be crudely characterized as office politics, I often have this sort of FOMO - missing out on new initiatives, budgets and projects which would be good for the team; or being unable to prevent others dumping hot potatoes onto us; or just not knowing what is brewing behind the scenes within the company. To a degree, I have to do this so that the technical guys don't have to.

My job, really, is to be invited to as many meeting as I can. I can then ditch the ones I don't think would be useful. Of course, often I sit on meetings that are a complete waste of time - but that is an occupational risk. I don't find these frustrating - they allow me to relax a bit, do my email, learn more about people in the meeting, or just practice my note taking.

suslik··on Scientists may have found a way to eliminate chromosome linked to Down syndrome
I don’t think this is true. Two counterexamples: Huntington didn’t have Huntington’s; Wilson didn’t have Wilson’s.

suslik··on Mozilla site down due to "overdue hosting payments" [fixed]
I’ve done things similar to this as a purchasing manager (in a different industry). Providers sometimes required a payment schedule that was critical to their cashflow (and I did feel very sympathetic), but I had to pressure them into a very unfavorable schedule - otherwise the contract would never be approved by finance. Small companies sometimes had hard time understanding that there were rules I simply couldn’t bend, and it was rather unpleasant at times.

However, that was always sorted out during negotiations.

suslik··on Emacs arbitrary code execution and how to avoid it
> How often do you take notes, while watching a YouTube video while controlling the playback, speed and volume from your editor? I can watch the video, while following the transcript karaoke-style, pause, speed-up, mute the video whenever I want (so I can start typing), I can grab the pieces of transcript and ask an LLM to give me explanations, etc.

Hey, any chance you can expand on how you do this, or just share configs?

Thanks!

suslik··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
> manager layoffs coming too.

A large pharma company which I worked for until quitting in July went through a similar process this year. The goal was also to reduce the manager / IC ratio - organizational efficiency and span of control, they called it - but in most instances it were ICs who were laid off while their managers were simply relegated to ICs.
