surgical_fire··on Europe's scorched landscapes seen from space after summer heatwaves
You cannot solve societal problems with individual actions.

It's about time to cut the crap that each person can make a difference while governments keep subsidizing all sorts of activities that damage the environment.

I will vote for forbidding beef, but will keep eating it until it is forbidden.

surgical_fire··on Europe's scorched landscapes seen from space after summer heatwaves
> Given the vast majority of the world population still see vegetarianism as a joke and not a necessity,

If it is a necessity, it should be government policy. Make it a regulation.

No change will happen when you switch the focus of necessity from society to individual.

surgical_fire··on Europe's scorched landscapes seen from space after summer heatwaves
Don't worry.

The last to starve will be the first to suffocate.

surgical_fire··on Brazilian election filter in X For You timeline
Elon actively censors on his platform points of view he dislikes.

Brazilian regulations just dictates that candidates cannot be recommended, regardless of party.

Candidates are forbidden of doing many things to keep elections free and mostly fair.

surgical_fire··on Brazilian election filter in X For You timeline
The posts are not being forbidden or excluded. Candidates are still free to post. It just can't be recommended in algorithmic feeds.

And those platforms are absolutely agents of American imperialism. Latin American countries in particular should be very wary of these.

surgical_fire··on Ask HN: How do you keep up with HN these days?
HN is good toilet time. I lurked here for a long time before I created this account.

The discussion was always kind of lame, very much like Reddit but full of people that really enjoy the smell of their own farts.

The upside is that I still find bookmarkable links here and there, both in threads and in comments.

Before and after AI, it nothing changed much in terms of overall quality.

surgical_fire··on Debian has begun voting on the future of AI/LLM contributions
Yes, and I'll be waiting patiently for some AI-slop Rust port of Debian to gain any traction.

Any day now.

I am not saying if they should or should not accept AI contributions, but this sort of comment misses the point so hard that is laughable.

surgical_fire··on Debian has begun voting on the future of AI/LLM contributions
For something like voting on decisions for some open source project, sure.

For actually voting on representatives it would be an absolute disaster.

surgical_fire··on Jane Street suffers $15B hit after meltdown at Situational Awareness
They were not fully aware of the situation, it seems.

...

I'll see myself out.

surgical_fire··on "Solving a largely imaginary user goal"
I agree with you.

Except I don't see why anything needs to support a light theme.

surgical_fire··on France's tax authority had data stolen on 680k taxpayers
Are you French?

Is the people on France's tax authority that want you identify somewhere?

surgical_fire··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
Claude sort of sucks. It communicates in an insufferable manner, parsing through the shit it outputs is extremely annoying.

It also very often is very confidently wrong in its findings.

I have been using GLM and DeepSeek in my home setup, and it's a lot more pleasant to use.

surgical_fire··on GLM-5.3: Frontier coding with emergent cyber capabilities
I am using GLM on Pi without any issues. You just create an API key.

Started recently though, mostly been using GLM 5.2 for planning with DeepSeek V4-flash for implementation.

surgical_fire··on Gemini 3.7 Flash
> investment in capex for future growth

Future growth needs to materialize for this to be profitable. Right now what they have is a cash-flow negative reality.

> There is no extra unsold capacity to use.

I have no evidence of this.

Neither I have evidence that they would be in the position of subsidizing further AI usage.

surgical_fire··on GLM-5.3: Frontier coding with emergent cyber capabilities
Can't the maintainers use the same models as the attackers?

The maintainers don't need approval to use GLM.

surgical_fire··on Gemini 3.7 Flash
Google was cash-flow negative in Q2 2026, and is raising a lot of debt.

I am not sure they can afford to subsidize Gemini more than they already do.

surgical_fire··on Deutsche Bank becomes first foreign yuan clearing bank in Europe
> Is quid really used in UK by 80-90% people?

I deal with Brits on a daily basis.

I seldom hear them use the term "pound". Everyone says quid.

surgical_fire··on Tailscale Traces Database Corruption to 16y/o SQLite WAL-Reset Bug
That's also possible
surgical_fire··on DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813
The email is real, I received it from DeepSeek itself. I probably received it because I buy tokens directly from them.

No actual price increase however.

surgical_fire··on DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813
Their stance on LLM development is why they earned my respect in a time when OpenAI and Anthropic only earn my mistrust.

That, and the fact that DS is an insanely capable model.

surgical_fire··on DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813
I use a plan -> implement wotkflow for this reason.

pro plans, flash implements. I am super happy with how flash behaves like that.

surgical_fire··on Tailscale Traces Database Corruption to 16y/o SQLite WAL-Reset Bug
My interpretation is that they haven't been copied because they didn't exist?

If you have 10 pages and it tries to copy 20, either those 10 pages wouldn't really be copied, or bogus data would be written.

That's how I read at least. Those things are not mutually exclusive.

surgical_fire··on uBlock Origin is giving up the fight to keep ads off Facebook
The best way to do this is block Facebook entirely.
surgical_fire··on OpenAI's Only Ethicist Reportedly Left Last Month
I know people like that, you are not wrong.

The problem is that corporations completely subvert any individual morality that might indicate that generating money is the only moral thing to do. Typically in small businesses. I comaider small businesses owners in general are a lot closer to labor than to capital owners in general terms, especially when their labor is still a large part of what keeps the business going.

Corporations are not that, those are hyper optimized for generating profits, all else be damned. Preferably if all else is damned.

surgical_fire··on US President hid in catering cart for secret flight in Turkey amid Iran threat
I think the problem is that Iran is a threat well beyond its borders to the US, despite the US administration (and numerous unrelated morons) claiming the US won the war against Iran, that it was obliterated, etc.
surgical_fire··on New Amazon Data Center Is Set to Have the Most Polluting Power Plant in the U.S.
I expect nothing from you and still I am disappointed.
surgical_fire··on Poland now 6th-largest EU economy, ahead of Switzerland and Belgium
Germany?

I happen to know a few software Engineers living there.

Berlin is pretty expensive, and some had to live in more outskirt areas (Potsdam for example). But none were living in gettho tier neighborhoods.

surgical_fire··on New Amazon Data Center Is Set to Have the Most Polluting Power Plant in the U.S.
I commend your patience in trying to debate a racist. But you proved it is futile.

Racism must be some sort of cognitive disability. He is completely unable to understand how the world works beyond skin color.

surgical_fire··on New Amazon Data Center Is Set to Have the Most Polluting Power Plant in the U.S.
Let's settle it like this then.

I hope you get what you want. Keep all the whites in your territory, and you get to have your land for your race, whatever you think it may be.

On this side of the pond, we can be welcoming all those pesky Indians, Asians, Muslim, Latin Americans, African, Slavic and so on. The more highly educated they are, the better.

I wish you luck in your inbreeding.

surgical_fire··on Why Wall Street is ignoring big tech's debt [video]
Rofl, I already went for cheaper Chinese solutions. I can achieve more than I could when I was giving OpenAI 20 bucks a month, and for a fraction of the price.

I have no idea why people still use ChatGPT or Claude.
