surgical_fire··on Tesla takes on $30B in credit as it approaches unprofitability
Wasn't Tesla unprofitable until as late as 2020? And I mean, fully unprofitable, with no shenanigans to save it.

Why for US companies is it okay to be unprofitable while they grow, but for Chinese companies it is shenanigans?

Also, if they actually sell things such as high-margin batteries, is it even shenanigans? Using a profitable division to finance the growth of another division sounds like excellent business strategy to me. Better than promising bullshit FSD to artificially inflate the stock price.

surgical_fire··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
This is delusional.

The cost of providing the tokens for a heavy user (and let's be frank, the people paying $200 are likely heavy users) is many, many times more than the $200 recurring revenue they generate.

surgical_fire··on Dots: Always-on agents
The "generous subscription" was actually just heavily subsidized usage.

People seemingly ignore how ruinously unprofitable those companies are.

surgical_fire··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
The subscription plans are a huge money sink, that obviously will have to go away or be priced at a ridiculous level to make sense.
surgical_fire··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
OpenAI is deeply unprofitable, particularly on those pro plans.

The only way is for prices to go up. Way up.

surgical_fire··on Prompting Claude Opus 5.5
I have tried GLM on a subscription, and also DeepSeek and MiMo using API directly. MiMo in particular is extremely cheap.

For regular software development they have been pretty great.

surgical_fire··on OpenAI halts training of latest models as reports mount of AI agents going rogue
> I am not your buddy, guy

Fair, I will refer to you as moron then.

I didn't bother to read your words beyond that point.

surgical_fire··on OpenAI halts training of latest models as reports mount of AI agents going rogue
> they didn't just hack HF, they organized themself, did research projects, and more. And they did all of this literally just to get a good grade.

All working under instructions that they needed to get a good grade.

The only shocking thing here is the absurd negligence of OpenAI, and how gullible people like you are to willingly swallow this crap.

And you have the gall to say I am illiterate.

Feel free to have the last word. Nothing else can come out of this conversation anyway.

surgical_fire··on OpenAI halts training of latest models as reports mount of AI agents going rogue
Are you giving all these possibilities because of the HuggingFace attack?

Buddy, that was gross negligence from OpenAI. Deliberate gross negligence if you ask me.

Those models are not automous as you presume. If someone taks them of dropping the Medicaid database, the people or companies behind that instruction should be punished.

"What if someone makes a bomb attack on a government building?" Is the same sort of questioning of the possibilities you are raising. If something like that happens, criminals should be punished.

surgical_fire··on OpenAI halts training of latest models as reports mount of AI agents going rogue
There's a simpler explanation. Maybe their next models doesn't offer a meaningful improvement.

Instead of releasing something that is incredibly expensive and gets a lackluster reception, you can delay it and clail something scary about rogue agents.

Those assholes have been ramping up on the doomerist narrative for months. That people still fall for this crap is baffling.

surgical_fire··on Tells of a Slop UI
lol what are you talking about? Cloudflare fucking sucks. If this is cause or consequence of being a multi-billion dollar company, I cannot tell.

Their UI being bad is the least of their problems.

surgical_fire··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
Correct.
surgical_fire··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
> Where in US and where in Europe?

FAANG, west coast.

I firmly believe my quality of life where I live is many times better than in places like San Francisco or Seattle. In many ways, this was likely the best decision I ever made.

Not getting too specific to avoid having my HN account being in any way related to my real identity. In fact, it is about time I should create a new account and retire this one.

surgical_fire··on Palantir's Co-Founder Wants Us Less Judgmental About Deadly Iran School Strike
Or, you know, the US just bombed a fucking school. I don't even think this was accidental.

And accident would imply they didn't want to bomb a school but this happened due to an honest mistake (already a tall order when you are dropping bombs in an area with civilian infrastructure).

In truth it was probably that the US didn't care about the collateral damage of bombing targets regardless of what is there.

Let's not pretend the US has much issues killing civilians in other countries. Your president just gave a speech at the UN talking about "annihilating Iran" and "driving them into hell".

Even after that people still contort their thoughts in the illusion that the US would never bomb a school. Imagine if Iran's president gave a speech talking the same way about Israel or the US, would you give Iran the same benefit of doubt?

This is less like censoring the internet and more like banning lead-based paint.
surgical_fire··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
I think it is alright. I actually had the choice to move to the US and I picked Europe instead.

If the measure of "winning" is chasing any current hype so that line goes up no matter the cost, I would rather not be in such a place.

surgical_fire··on Tell HN: AGI Is Here

surgical_fire··on Oracle on the hook to pay data centre investors even if site has no electricity
We have to account for the fact that Oracle is a law firm with a software branch attached to it.

Investors who (rightfully) see this "force majeure" claim as bullshit will have to drag Oracle through court, and Oracle probably counts on this taking years to get settled.

surgical_fire··on Netherlands bracing for potentially devastating US sanctions against the ICC
While the EU does impose a lot of regulations on trade (thankfully I might add), foreign policy in general is still up to each member state. It's how we had Orban for years licking Putin's asshole.

I am very much in favor of a more integrated EU, including to a sort of federalization. Only with more integration we can stand up to other great powers.

surgical_fire··on Netherlands bracing for potentially devastating US sanctions against the ICC
The problem is that the EU is not a country, it is a bloc. Each member state is a sovereign nation.

It is up to each member state to decide how to respond to an increasingly hostile US.

Which is why foreign actors such as US and Russia always seem to undermine the EU and foment dissent in the bloc. A unified Europe would be much harder to push around.

surgical_fire··on JetBrains Air: A System of Products for Agentic Software Development
Cool, I'll try this today.
surgical_fire··on JetBrains Air: A System of Products for Agentic Software Development
I wanted to try Air, as it seems to have interesting ideas for working collaboratively with LLMs.

But the choice of AI providers was very limited, and I found no ways to add the ones I use (the only options for providers were Anthropic, OpenAI and Google).

Any plans of opening up for more providers?

surgical_fire··on JetBrains Air: A System of Products for Agentic Software Development
Likewise.

Unless you are blindly vibe coding everything without an IDE to help navigate what is being generated to review the output, working would be hellish.

And if you are blindly vibe coding everything, I am just glad I don't have to work with you. While LLMs mostly speed me up, they make serious mistakes often enough that a review is necessary.

surgical_fire··on Apple Mac mini review
Precisely. And using Linux is a joy. A absolutely hate working on MacOS. If Linux was not an option for me, I would most likely crawl back to Windows than use MacOS.

And boy, Limux runs awesomely on Thinkpad. I got one with 32GB RAM, 512 GB SSD for a mere 600 bucks. Works like a charm, perfect for any software development work.

surgical_fire··on MiMo v2.6
And they took multiple measures presumably to stop "distillation", such as hiding reasoning steps.

Chinese models kept improving in capability regardless, and are in some ways more impressive than Claude/ChatGPT.

So yeah, I think they are bulshitters. The can create reports and send letter to congress simply because they know if allowed to compete freely the Chinese models will eventually prevail.

Also, very rich of you to mention Chinese firms record on IP theft when Anthropic and OpenAI are companies entirely built on large scale IP theft.

surgical_fire··on MiMo v2.6
> If there really was 25,000 accounts breaking ToS

Is this even true?

I don't trust a single word that comes out of thr people behind Anthropic/OpenAI.

surgical_fire··on MiMo v2.6
I certainly am.

Months ago I switched entirely to use Chinese model. Mostly DeepSeek and MiMo, although I recently started to play with GLM as well.

The models are excellent and in many ways I prefer them to Claude.

I see no difference in terms of capability, but the fact that they are cheap frees me to experiment.
