> didn't support the most popular layout method at the time, tables

Tables were NEVER a layout method and it was only used for that because CSS was deficient at the time.

If you yanked JavaScript out, you wouldn't have jQuery either.

This has been around for years and you'll spend just as long trying to find something worth looking at and, perhaps, replicating. Most of them are just as drab and dreary as you'll find making the site, to some extent, pointless without doing any vetting for something unique.

A lot of things influence your decisions but it is you that makes those decisions. The media, as an entity, cannot and does not vote.
sureaboutthis··on Ditching processed foods won’t be easy – The barriers to cooking from scratch
A year ago, my son told me he was spending more money than we thought he should on groceries. So my wife and I decided to keep track of how much we spend on eating. This includes the very rare times we eat at restaurants, which might include a burger joint if we're stuck on the road somewhere, and high end restaurants for birthdays and anniversary.

I do all the cooking. I rarely use anything from a box or a can. That is, I make my own pasta and tomato sauce and pizza dough and sourdough bread, for example. I also use higher end recipes, not sloppy joe dinners, including steaks and chicken and I more often buy spices like parsley and oregano fresh and chop them myself and not dried in a jar.

The numbers came in, interestingly enough, at $187 each week on average every time. This is for my wife and myself alone plus (cause my wife said so) about $15 a week for our two dogs cause, you know, they're family, too.

For reasons I am not positive about, our weekly expenditure for the last three months has risen to $209 a week. It had appeared to me that items cost more than in the past but I was unsure till I ran the numbers just a couple of days ago. Have grocery prices gone up?

In any case, cooking well designed meals takes an effort. Once you find recipes you like and get used to making them, it's easier, but it will still take one to two hours for every meal without rushing. I work out of my house and two major grocery stores down the street so that makes things easier.

EDIT: I should add that I am in the Midwest USA.

What does the media have to do with our control over government besides nothing?
sureaboutthis··on Assange Indicted Under Espionage Act, Raising First Amendment Issues
We have plenty of control over government. If you don't like who's in charge, you can vote them out.

If you think that's a ridiculous statement, then consider that every major television network around the world covers our political elections here in the US and the focus is always voter turnout and who we vote for. The only reason for that is: we have all the power.

Of course, if you don't like who gets elected all the time, perhaps you need to consider why your candidates never win because it seems far fewer people agree with your selections. Why is that?

I'm a web developer, too. I care to know where I can speed things up or minimize things. How the code I write affects how my web applications run and which technologies I should consider or dismiss based on how it might affect the hardware we run with.

Too often, the solution of some is only to throw more hardware at the problem.

> I don't agree with your point that the command line is how computers work.

I said no such thing. My point was that, if one wants to program computers, I would think one would want to be good at their job and delve deep into how their code makes computers do what they do. Showing no interest in learning the command line or the shell makes me question their interest and desire.

sureaboutthis··on The Art of Command Line (2015)
You are basing your story on the competence of one who doesn't know the correct way to use his tools and can then build a house well. That's not going to happen or it will take far longer to complete.
sureaboutthis··on The Art of Command Line (2015)
If one is spending hours upon hours on irrelevant parts, I, again, question their competence.

If one doesn't care that the carpenter building his house is using a hammer upside down, that's a whole 'nother bunch of issues I won't go into here.

So you think emacs is a simple editor, eh?
sureaboutthis··on The Art of Command Line (2015)
I always question what one's work day involves and how committed they are to their work when they say they hate the command line and avoid the shell. It says, to me, that they really don't want to delve very deeply into how computers work and don't care. If they care, but cannot understand, then I question their competence and whether they need to find another line of work.

Learning the fundamentals of your tools is a...fundamental of doing this job. If you don't want to know how your tools work, I question one's competence or desire to do this job.

sureaboutthis··on Google HTML/CSS style guide suggests omitting head and body tags
No professional developer targets a browser when developing a web site unless its a captured audience with no choice. Professional developers follow the specification. Those who do otherwise are only mentioned in reddit headlines and other hobbyist sites.
sureaboutthis··on Google HTML/CSS style guide suggests omitting head and body tags
It's optional under certain conditions but those conditions are given as you correctly point out in the link to the HTML standard. While many seem to be focused on what Google says, it's nothing that those of us who read the actual spec didn't already know.

And every web developer references the spec when they have questions...don't they?

sureaboutthis··on Vanilla Fever
There are recipes online. iirc, it's something like 4 beans to 4oz of vodka for "single fold" extract.
sureaboutthis··on Vanilla Fever
My $20 bottle of Madagascar vanilla extract was $50 last time I went to Penzey's. Just an hour ago, I bought a smaller bottle to help me ride out the price storm and noticed the price of that $50 bottle went down to $43. I sure hope it gets down to $20 again soon.

The price of vanilla beans have already dropped and I thought I would just make my own extract but I also thought I only needed one bean to so many ounces of vodka. Turns out, you need many more than that and I just can't justify the price despite what some online recipes may claim.

sureaboutthis··on Intel vulnerabilities costing 25% CPU performance loss to a cloud provider
Tests on Phoronix show Clear having significant wins in a number of tests. They have done so by rewriting libraries to perform well with Intel hardware. Those who complain about a 25% performance hit elsewhere can now be shown pretty good performance with Clear that isn't attainable with other distros.

I did this for a living in the 1980s--CPUs from TTL. My artistic side wants to build a small running computer from all TTL inside a plexiglas cube with all the chips glued to the walls and the interconnecting multi-colored wires exposed with a small display of something.
