suprememoocow··on XKCD-style charts with D3
If you want to play around with the example, I've stuck it on jsfiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/KndsL/2/
suprememoocow··on LLJS: Low-Level JavaScript
Oh dear. The site immediately crashes Chrome (Version 22.0.1229.79 m) on Windows XP.
suprememoocow··on US lawmakers say Huawei poses security threat
The Economist did a good, balanced piece on this subject: http://www.economist.com/node/21559922
suprememoocow··on US lawmakers say Huawei poses security threat
Uh, can you spell P.R.O.T.E.C.T.I.O.N.I.S.M?
suprememoocow··on James Dyson calls for reform to patent system
Interesting that Dyson seems calling for an easier patent application process and more protection for patent rights holders. He almost seems oblivious to the problem of patent trolls.
suprememoocow··on Why philosophy is largely ignored by science
From the introduction to The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking & Leonard Mlodinow: "Traditionally these are questions for philosophy, but philosophy is dead. Philosophy has not kept up with modern developments in science, particularly physics. Scientists have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge"

suprememoocow··on Start sending dates the right way (aka The ISO8601 101)
Beware that older browsers, including IE8, won't automatically parse ISO8601 dates, so Date.parse('2012-05-04T12:20:34.000343+01:00') or new Date('2012-05-04T12:20:34.000343+01:00') return the date representation of 'invalid date'. ISO8601 parsing was only introduced with JavaScript 1.8.5. This means that if you're supporting older browsers, you'll need to write your own parser on the client side or use a third-party library (I generally use my own regexp based parser)
suprememoocow··on Underscores are stupid
Agreed! This really shouldn't be on HN front page.
suprememoocow··on Game Theory Explained: Why The Joker and Not Batman is Our Savior
For a contrary view on game theory, I highly recommend watching the excellent BBC documentary series "The Trap" by film maker Alan Curtis.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Trap_(television_documentar...

In the first episode, Curtis examines the rise of game theory during the Cold War. It discusses John Nash's paranoid schizophrenia and shows footage Nash in his later years acknowledging that his paranoid views of other people at the time were false.

suprememoocow··on Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs
I've been contracting in the finance industry in London for seven years (at four firms) and although financial companies are some of the biggest users of open-source software, it's almost unheard of for firms to contribute back to open-source projects. There are a few progressive companies but unfortunately I've not worked at any of them.

Many firms have a strict policy of disallowing any source (open or not) from leaving company premises. Email servers and proxy filters have detectors that will raise an alert if source code is emailed or sent out over HTTP. It's easily a sackable offence and this discourages developers from contributing changes back to open-source: there are simply too many hurdles to jump through in order to do it.

suprememoocow··on Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs
You are right - that is very true.

In most large finance companies though, it's also true that a lot of the less-exciting back office development work is being done by software developers who are overqualified for the roles but attracted by high wages.

suprememoocow··on Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs
Many of the sentiments expressed by the author are shared by developers and other technical staff working in the finance industry. In places like London and New York, finance has, for a long time, managed to get the best technical staff by paying the highest wages even if the work is less interesting. This has been detrimental to other industries in the same regions. As morale declines in finance firms, however, this is changing.
suprememoocow··on All Programmers Are Self-Taught
Interesting article. I tend to agree with the author. In fact, I would go further and claim that while I've met many very good programmers who learnt they're craft at university or college, it's probably safe to say that all the truly great programmers I've met have done at least 10,000hrs of self-taught programming before they even left school.
suprememoocow··on The Day I Saw Van Gogh’s Genius in a New Light
I'm colour-blind (red-green) and have, since I can remember, always had a huge affinity for the paintings of Van Gogh. I didn't realise that other people considered his paintings to be unusually toned or that he may have been colour-blind, so I found this article fascinating.
