superseeplus··on Cars took over because the legal system helped squeezed out alternatives
You can pay for transit with pretax dollars but not for biking. There used to be a $20 per month commuter benefit but it was killed as part of the Republican tax overhaul. Even before it was killed, you couldn’t use both the bicycling and transit benefit if for example you rode to a park and ride transit stop. You can take advantage of both the parking and transit benefit if you drive to a transit stop.
superseeplus··on Lyft Takes over Ford GoBike
Citibike in NYC (also operated by Lyft) costs $2 per ride for using an ebike. And that is if you are already a member. Non members pay $5. There is no membership allowing unlimited ebike usage.
superseeplus··on How a small group of activists got gas-powered leaf blowers banned in D.C.
But, it is possible to measure the intensity of sound and how much that contributes to hearing loss. CDC has a handy chart on the effects of noise here: https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/hearing_loss/what_noises_cause_hear... . The existence of other sources of noise loud enough to damage hearing does not preclude banning leaf blowers.
superseeplus··on Apple is putting iTunes on Samsung TVs
Or maybe they are just trying to separate their content selling business from their hardware businesses? They could get additional revenue from users using iTunes to rent movies or TV shows even if they don’t buy their hardware.
superseeplus··on What a Real Train System Looks Like (2009)
It is also that many people actively oppose trains because they are afraid that the trains will bring in undesirable people (poor people, criminals, hipsters from New York) to their neighborhood. When New York MTA tried to extend Metro North service 25 miles beyond Poughkeepsie on already existing tracks, residents of the surrounding towns opposed the extension claiming that NYC commuters will move to their rural towns.
superseeplus··on What a Real Train System Looks Like (2009)
Sort of off-topic, but every time someone says this, I am reminded of the subprime car loan market where the same car is sold at inflated prices and usurious interest rates to people who have bad credit, then repossessed and sold again. If we had decent public transport, that wouldn't happen.
superseeplus··on Apple iPhone Supplier Foxconn Planning Deep Cost Cuts
Does this mean that if someone already owns an iPhone 7 and does not want to upgrade to the newest iPhone XS or XR, the most frugal thing to do is keep using it and maybe replace the battery rather than buy a new Android phone?
superseeplus··on Inside the sordid world of America's for-profit colleges
If student loans granted to students studying in for-profit schools became dischargeable in bankruptcy, then lenders would be incentivized to consider their graduation rates and employability of their graduates before granting loans.
superseeplus··on The City That Had Too Much Money
It does happen in American cities too. Many of the very expensive apartments on Billionaires Row were bought by rich foreigners trying to park or launder money.
superseeplus··on First analysis of how Uber and Lyft have affected roadway congestion in SF
I’m sure this is comparing Uber Pool or similar rather than riding the car all by yourself. Also, San Francisco has multiple transit agencies and transferring between them means paying another fare.
superseeplus··on Ajit Pai calls California’s net neutrality rules “illegal”
If they do that, can California rewrite the law to distinguish between last mile service and transit service and regulate only the last mile part?
superseeplus··on Was ditching the headphone jack a good idea?
Interestingly, I use Bluetooth headphones with my TV and I have never noticed issues with audio/video sync. Have modern Bluetooth stacks reduced the problem or is the TV compensating for the latency by delaying the video?
superseeplus··on Was ditching the headphone jack a good idea?
There are codecs which make Bluetooth audio suck less, but they are a fragmented mess. The two really popular ones are AAC and AptX. iPhones support only AAC while Android phones might either not support either or support only AptX. Sony has its own proprietary codec LDAC which only works with their headphones. To make matters worse, not all headphones support both AptX and AAC.
superseeplus··on How well does population density predict U.S. voting outcomes?
How does population density affect the impact of an individual vote?
superseeplus··on Passport queues vex airlines
CBP has a pretty handy app to lookup wait times at US airports at https://awt.cbp.gov/ . Looking at the wait times for JFK for the past week, the maximum wait time for non-US citizens exceeded 120 minutes often.
superseeplus··on Traveling the World on a Third World Passport
Something not often mentioned is that some countries (UK, Spain and France come to mind) require a visa to transit through their airports.
