supernihil··on Show HN: nonPythonic Music Video
Hi, I had some great fun coding all the effects in this video using python, opencv and dlib.

My approach: I work as a dev in roboto nautic drones. I am strict at the dayjob so i "shitcode" my "artware" in my sparetime meaning i usually go through the following cycle:

(Example based on the slitscan teeth and eyes effect from the video)

1. I wake up from a (day/night)-dream with a thought: "how wluld it look if the teeth grew out from a video face while showing their past as a slitscan"

2. I find a sourcevideo since i am lazy (usually on youtube)

3. Load up vscode and startwriting python

4. I write in a state of garbage flow, garbage because the code i write is deliberatley trashy (a vent/dayjob escape), flow because i dont do much editing. Itend to like to overwrite (reclare) functions instead of correcting them leaving a huge pile of trash code

3. I render a few frames, correct my algorithm, render some more and when happy (or falling asleep) i press enter and let it run (with tqdm telling me eta on completion)

4. I way, usually days because i deliberatelydont optimize my code so its slooooooow to render

5. On finnish i look at the result and feel like i got the answer and move on.

In this example though i didnt move on cuz i was doing a friend a favor and had to compile my messy clips into a timeline and give it back to him in form of a music video.

I canrelease my shitty code but i am afraidsomebody might get a seazure looking at it lol

supernihil··on Boblberg – against lonelyness (red cross/Denmark)
Boblberg is a danish site that provides a platform for seeking friendship and communities.

I myself have been using it to find people accompany me on hikes or concerts. Its not a romantic site and it solves the issue of my generation (i know, small perspective and completely local) of growing isolation and no option of ad-hoc meetups.

My personal need is based on recent moving to a new town and thereby loosing my social sphere.

After moving i realized there was no easy way of engaging in conversations as people engaged withing silos of well established friendships.

This site has already given me company on a long walk in the surrounding nature.

I am sad to realize my rejection of social media has left me in solitude but this sites simplicity and focus on establishing contact only, and leaving activities to real world meetups, has opened up for hope community.

I live in a society (Denmark) where we succesfully have established a wellfare state over the last 100 years. A system that provides schooling, social security and helathcare over the taxbill but also a system where the need for community and relying on relations has diminished.

I could live a life working or not working, sick or healthy, with kids or without and not have to rely on relations for anything as the stat solves all my needs. But that leaves the burden of establishing relations from scratch.

I know its not comparable to the burdens of people around the world but my loenelyness is real and it kills people on non-ignorable scale in my society.

supernihil··on Why I prefer making useless stuff
Over the years ive found myself with my "hobby art-ware" between two seats: programmers/engineers that, contrary to my expectation, dont see the value and ask questions like "is it on product hunt?" And the other camp being my artist friends who ask: "what do you wanna say with this, what is the concept"

I finally have found piece in my "stuff" being a product of my intuitive curiosity and therefore not bound by the same laws of explanation :-)

supernihil··on Ask HN: Zero config swag store for GitHub repo merch
using redbubble seems to be the least painful setup (as they handle everything like payment shipping inventory etc)

so i went and setup a design there for my github repo (see commit: https://github.com/sloev/python-lambdarest/pull/79)

supernihil··on Boolean Headache
hahaha exactly, what a nice world to live in with tings and concepts having names!
supernihil··on Amazon: Not OK – Why we had to change Elastic licensing
this post from a year ago: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/opensource/launching-open-distr...

sums up amazons stand pretty much, they talk about how they are suffering from "Elasticsearches bullying behavior" but in reality Elasticsearch were abusing Elasticsearch in their marketing ("partnering with ES.." lies), they created their own fork instead of offering back to upstream, they partnered up with a company that were stealing enterprise code from ES and selling it as their own product, i mean AWS does not have the privilige to express themselves as opensource evangelists.

supernihil··on Workaholism leads to health problems, work addiction risk depends on occupation
dont worry, not doing these decisions lightheaded :-) just wanted to express that i admire the thought of skipping the "money making mission" i am on to take care of the real things i care about being my family and my head. I hope you all get a great 2021!
supernihil··on Workaholism leads to health problems, work addiction risk depends on occupation
this is really interesting!!! i am considering a drop exactly like that except from 100k to 62k in order to clear up the anxiety induced helltrain i'm currently on, asked about it here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25765287

sounds like you made the right choice, i am getting more and more convinced about sacrificing the career to get time for treating myself and the family better

supernihil··on Ask HN: Teaching kids how to think?
I have had a kind of struggle to bring up kids while being in the skizophrenic spectrum And providing the income as a dev.

But my approach has always been:

1. Read every day and spice it up with my own freaky tales of spiderman, witches, jungles etc. My dad used to do the same and my kids like it a lot.

2. Be outside in all weather and all times. Nothing hits jumping in pools of water with or without boots. We dig a lot in a nearby field of dirt, making caves and talking about materials etc. Also we like fishing crabs and making bonfires year around.

Being outside is the only place i am at piece with my sickened head so it also means they get to spend time with "not stressed dad"

3. We draw a lot, have paper and drawing stuff everywhere. We hang them up and talk about them.

4. Recently we have begun to make simple "turtle drawing" programs together to show them how fun it is that if you can instruct a computer to draw one tree you can also tell it to draw 100 different trees of different size and colors.

5. We talk a lot and we never "dumb it down" instead i spin the history stories or the science stuff i like to talk baout so they get intrugued .

The outcome: they are happy. I value their happyness as its sadly not the feeling i wear. My sadness is not invisible to them but the time we spend together and my openness about it has not yet had a negative impact on them.

They are also very socially engaged and thoughtful which i hope is as well connected to the many different types of people, from all layers of society, that they see me talking to.

supernihil··on Hotels of Pyongyang
I can recommend "cold case hamarskjold" from same director too
supernihil··on Hotels of Pyongyang
I think paying attention to taglines as means of content is false. The dox is what is is. Marketing is what it is. I agree with your points though but when you say "evilest by what messure?" I could for example say "by still being around for so long" Also does it make sense to discuss minima/maxima in terms of human rights? I guess we all want maximum! :-)
supernihil··on Hotels of Pyongyang
Yeah and also sometimes introduced as a drunk. Incredible courage they all had. But dont underestimate their intelligence: each person in the group have incredible comedic talent as well and are incredible in a multitude of other fields too
supernihil··on Hotels of Pyongyang
Nobody knows i guess but i think the team acted responsibly to not bring people into "bad standing"
supernihil··on Hotels of Pyongyang
Whataboutism: the art of reducing everything to a needle in a haystack. :-)
supernihil··on Hotels of Pyongyang
I just watched the trailer again. Damn its an impressive portrait of the torment of resisting your urge to scream and the actual panic in the small group of keeping eachothers face and reactions in the narrow strip of "acceptaple" while being in the dystopic nightmare
supernihil··on Hotels of Pyongyang
Years ago some danes (incl two adopted south koreans) went to north korea to film a satire documentary called "the Red Chapel" (trailer https://youtu.be/1aQRC_4LheY)

One of the members was a handicapped danish comedian, the other another very legendary satire comedian (now chef) and the director has later made many dox afterwards.

During their trip they participated in a military march. One of them wheel-chaired in a country known for "magically having no handicapped people".

Its equally incredible what they did in their visit as it is they got out alive.

Here is an interview with the director: https://youtu.be/gWkPKlmptFo

supernihil··on What Is the Sound of Thought?
I have the same. But in my case it lasts for hours after work. Not being able to comprehend the speech of my kids. For me i got some label to put on it after being diagnozed with Skizotypia
supernihil··on 3vents.github.io – Realtime GitHub
source is here: https://github.com/3vents/3vents.github.io

I made this as a simple ui to view what people are doing "right now" on github. It basically streams "api.github.com/events" directly into your browser and does some basic layouting as well. It needs a "github access token" to work, the source above tells how to create such a token with minimum privileges.

I find it inspiring to see what people are doing in all sorts of weird projects :-)
