superk··on James Cameron on “Avatar 2″ and the Impending Environmental Crisis
I don't follow you on the jump from unfounded to religious. Not every statement which does not include a scientific footnote is religious in nature.
superk··on Ask HN: Having emotional breakdown
You don't have a thorough understanding about how psychologists help people.

That's probably because I've never known any who have.

And little? I don't think depression is a "little problem."

Fair enough. I switched little to the colored pills.

Anyway, he asked for advice from a bunch of random people on the internet - and IMO there were a lot of good ones... exercising and stuff like that - but that takes real effort and the OP doesn't seem capable of that right now. So in that context I think my advice was as fair as the rest - certainly seems to work for the socially awkward in the rest of the world which is why it's pretty much accepted in every culture everywhere.

Edit: Wish I could get Kingfisher and Taj Mahal here...

superk··on Ask HN: Having emotional breakdown
And yet it's consumed by about 2 billion people worldwide. The OP's problem is that he's a 21yo boy. Talking about his problems with a shrink and taking little colored pills is not going to help him have the experiences he needs to grow.

Get into IRC

God no. I've never known an IRC channel that was not moderated by egotistical losers. IRC is great for coding help, not socializing. He needs real people. Not another fat, lonely kid with ban privileges.

Dude, start drinking. You will get over your inhibitions and meet people. You will have the best and worst experiences of your life. And sometime after it is all said and done you will find yourself.

You're right. But I wanted to reply on the same level as the OP.

He never asks them if they'd like a refrigerator for food and medicine, an air conditioner or some roads built to increase their access to civilisation.

Um.. most of the natives in South America are losing out to clear-cut logging. I'm not sure how a refrigerator is going to help that.

What the heck does that actually mean? Can we just admit that these statements are religious, but wrapped in non-religious language?

It's actually the reverse. The religious view is God gave us the Earth as a kind of fruit to be plucked. Since we go on to live in Heaven for eternity the stewardship of the Earth is sorta in the hands of the Aethists and non-believers...

I bought the first disc I could when it came out. And it's still sitting unwatched on the shelf.

Your pointless consumerism is part of the problem.

superk··on Zepto.js, a jQuery-compatible mobile JavaScript framework in 2K (presentation)
I had this problem with XUI (and even Madrobby's brilliant Emile - although that's mostly a proof of concept). The library is just beneath what I consider necessary in terms of flexibility and robustness to be usable in production. Like no error handler in Zepto Ajax - seriously? An Ajax request will never fail... on mobile!? And this could be my perception - and I could be completely wrong - but when something is marketed as 'in only 2K!' or 'in under 50 lines!' there's a discouraging resistence to adding code in order to keep those metrics.

On the other hand, most micro-frameworks require the user to take more responsibility for making sure things don't break - which could mean lighter code... a good thing for mobile. For example, Emile does a fine job of tweening integers or colors, but watchout for inherited values - like fontWeight 'normal'. So the user has to take the extra step of defaulting the styles to values the script can work with.

John I tend to agree with you - and applaud the effort you've been doing with jQuery Mobile - but I also think the focus should be on mobile data usage, not device sales. In our case (and YMMV) mobile users are 80% iPhone, 10% Android and 10% everything else. That seems to be pretty par with most US-centric e-tailers. In addition the price-per-order on iPhone is much higher than the rest. Presumably because the experience on other devices doesn't lend to hanging around and buying stuff. Do we really want to develop for platforms that aren't there or for which the device handicaps the experience?

Mobile devices don't have the staying factor of desktop browsers (most users upgrade their phone/plan every 2-3 years). Shouldn't we target the best devices going forward to ensure that adoption of technology keeps up and everyone is entitled to the best experience overall?

superk··on The PlayStation Phone
So... can you play PlayStation games on it?
superk··on Ask HN: Professional Hacker's Web Presence?
Because they can see first hand the quality of the code (plus all the other meta information that comes along with commit logs). How do you evaluate proprietary code at anywhere near that same level?
superk··on Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 too little, too late
I spoke with someone who was able to play around with a pre-release device and their verdict was the included browser actually behaved more like IE6 than IE7.
superk··on Ask HN: Professional Hacker's Web Presence?
If it were an employer's market you could probably get away with that.
superk··on Ask HN: Professional Hacker's Web Presence?
Sorry... I meant because the two sentences weren't entirely related.
superk··on Ask HN: Professional Hacker's Web Presence?
Edit: Ok, that's a little bit of a loaded question. Key to the professional hacker / public face: blog, github / google code, twitter and activity in forums (like HN).

How to evaluate a potential employee / contract.. the above, plus LinkedIn, CV / references, portfolio and social networks (if they aren't careful with permissions).

Supplier.. google, twitter (#good / #bad tweets) and credibility of web site.

Partner.. lot's of face-to-face time.

superk··on Ask HN: How to tell quickly if someone is professional?
If it's a superficial analysis (ie interview), then punctuality, dress and preparation on their part (investigation prior to the meeting) is valid. If they haven't inquired about the dress code, then they should assume it's formal. If you have a minute to do a slightly deeper analysis then Google is your friend: how do they present themselves on social networks, do they have a blog, have they commented in forums (do they troll) have they posted code (usually a goldmine). If the profession is technological and they have no web presence whatsoever, that's usually a red flag in itself.

superk··on RIM Responds to Apple’s ‘Distortion Field’
"And by the way, RIM has achieved record shipments for five consecutive quarters and recently shared guidance of 13.8 – 14.4 million BlackBerry smartphones for the current quarter."

What does shared guidance even mean? And why doesn't he know whether the number is 13.8 or 14.4 - a small 600,000 discrepancy?

superk··on Google closes Issue 9
If you've ever managed an open-source project and have to deal with tens or hundreds of requests for features or changes to the API specific to a single use-case (usually that the requestor needs for a client but doesn't want to implement themselves) you'd understand why sometimes "WONTFIX" is the only suitable reply.
